There was a thread today by an ASIC engineer that worked for one of the major chip makers. He claims that Apple has every intention of turning on 3G in the future.

He seemed to know a great deal about it, we'll see if it gets confirmed once iFixit pulls the thing apart and verifies the chips inside.

This is so much fun!

A bazillion Apple fans are disassembling their webserver more like :(

I'm going to bed, will wake up tomorrow to large, clean disassembly pictures, user reviews, screenshots galore, and a few poor saps who broke it.

points to them for jumping on it. it seems like there are plenty of iPhones to go around, so if you do not care about risking $500, then what the hell. at least they are documenting it, so everyone knows what the internal schiznits are.

Help

I am an old At&T wiresless customer before Cingular bought them out (and are now again At&T). Att is telling me that I have to upgrade my plan to get the iphone saying it wont work with it. I can't do that because I have a north america plan that makes Canada local for me (where I am currently living and live between the states and canada). So I have to find a way to keep my plan and get an iPhone. Help?

This makes no sense, the only thing you should need to upgrade is to the data package.
As a matter of fact I lowered my minutes because I'm not using that much and they had no problem doing so.
I would wait a couple of days and than try talking to them again.

Good luck.

Apple and Macrumors really hit home runs today! I have never seen anything like it. And who would of thought it would have happened to Apple. Apple has done everything right with the iPhone. The hype is out of control. I am confident the iPhone will live up to it. With all of the networks covering the release, even referring to today as iDay, today was nothing but a success.

Like the iPhone or not, this will only benefit Mac users and us Fanboys.

I know many of us got sick of the relentless iPhone stories on Macrumors, but this benefits us all including Macrumors.

Apple's future is brighter than ever before and so is Steve's baby (and ours to)--the Mac!

I think we should all give thanks to Apple and to Macrumors for their terrific non stop coverage. This was a great day!

PowerbookMedic.com already has a complete disassembly guide for the iPhone. It is the 1st complete disassembly.

Maybe I'm not finding it, but have you done anything but disassembling and reassembling? I can't find any info on what's in there or any kind of interesting stuff other than.. took it apart and put it back together, which is useless (to me at that is).

I wonder if Steve still does think of Mac as his "baby."

I think that Apple is really trying to become the next Sony "style" of company. Computers are not their central focus anymore, as evidenced by their VERY slow updates, lack of new product designs, and software delays.

All of the PowerbookMedic pictures are up...the text instructions will be up shortly. Our servers are being hammered right now, and it is delaying the posting of the text.

Well hopefully they will get back on top of it now the iPhone is finally out and not completely go the way of Sony. The next 6 months will be nothing if not interesting about the future innovation at Apple, or lack thereof.

Will you post some details as to what the chips are inside and who the manufacturers are?

There is a sense of urgency in the photo story I just saw on your site. Frantically disassembling and photographing like a world record was at stake!

There is. They want to say they were the first to disassemble an iPhone.
