Yeah. What? Soldered. To. The. Board. Bad bad bad bad.

Now we need an anonomyous ATT employee to explain what happens to the phone when the battery gives up. Guess they replace the board and battery in the same swoop. Good thing the phone is subsidized and ATT covers replacement easily... Crap, that sucks.

The battery appears to be the exact same as the iPod Nano. Soldered to the board, but easy solder joints for removing and replacing.

Yeah it's not a difficult replacement. However by time you need a battery replacement you'll already have iPhone G2.

This is a non-issue.

*Yawn* Practically a spammer account. Registered since Aug 2003 and still a "newbie"?

Ummm, a spammer account would be like a 65816, aways posting meaningless stuff. Someone who only posts every once in a long while can't be considered a spammer - it's just the opposite.

I don't know anything about hardware stuff, but in that picture at macfixit, the chips seem to be covered in something that looks like asphalt, concealing their identities...

Could be a heat-conductive material. If this were a Japanese take-apart they would have scraped off that stuff and dissolved any remaining residue.

Still, mighty fine geek-porn.

Dang!! ...and this is the company who today released, like, the most innovative product. Ever!

:)

Rod.
Well, in context , it was a reply about Apple becoming like Sony and not caring about the Macintosh line.

I wonder if Steve still does think of Mac as his "baby."

I think that Apple is really trying to become the next Sony "style" of company. Computers are not their central focus anymore, as evidenced by their VERY slow updates, lack of new product designs, and software delays.

I was saying we will see what the future holds for the computer aspect. I will never say that I am not a fanboy, perhaps to a degree I am actually ashamed of at times. But nevertheless, the iPhone has made Apple not update the rest of their product in the time frame that we are all used to. I love Apple, I want an iPhone and will get one, but I want Leopard more. The next 6 months will be interesting.

the site mentioned that the battery was soldered to the case.

no user replaceable battery?

iFixit is a fantastic website, you guys should give them more time rather than the instant recoil in horror. They provide free, extensively documented .html and .pdf guides for pulling apart and repairing almost any mac product (and they can provide spare parts as required). I've just used their powerbook 12" guide to replace my hard drive this past weekend and found it fantastic. I also managed to get the display on my 15" titanium working with their guide that had been toast for years. Check out more of their website and you'll see they are not a cheap gimmick.

p.s. I'm not affiliated with them at all. Just very happy to have found them recently and saved a lot of cash.

This makes no sense, the only thing you should need to upgrade is to the data package.
As a matter of fact I lowered my minutes because I'm not using that much and they had no problem doing so.
I would wait a couple of days and than try talking to them again.

Good luck.

Nope. I've been getting this same line for a while, even before the iPhone came out. My wife and I bought a plan with the old AT&T, then, when one of our phones died, I went into a Cingular store, and they told me that the current phones wouldn't work for me unless I switched to a Cingular plan. So, instead, I went to eBay to get an unlocked phone. This, unfortunately, isn't an option for an iPhone right now. In any event, I'm afraid that the answer to the original poster is that, until someone finds a way to unlock an iPhone, his only options would be to upgrade his plan or not get an iPhone.

since it's soldered, you can't replace it even if you take the iphone apart?

I don't think so.... either you can't or you have to be VERY good what you are trying to do to even attempt it. I think people will end up giving it to apple to replace anyway...

It sure seems like it. :(

(...waiting for a Mac Pro update......tick...tock...tick...tock...and another month goes by) :apple:

Stop and think for a moment please.

Put it all into perspective people. There are people starving in this world and $600 could have done a lot for them. But instead, we see this sort of this happen on the internet. Perhaps they can put it back together in working order...that is fine. But guys at over at thinksecret totally dismantled the thing. What a waste! Do people stop to think of all the time and effort and sweating building these things? I'm talking about the people (low paying Chinese), the factories, and plants polluting our air/water just to make parts for it (battery, silicon, metals and plastic ie.). Just because you have the $600 to pay for it, is it really necessary to take it apart or destroy it? What's next, smashmyipone? Some people need to wake up and understand this is a total waste and should stop consuming recklessly and need to see the bigger picture and take responsibility and respect everything around us. Thank you.

You say all that acting like there is no value, worth or anything to be gained by taking the thing apart. Some might argue the value is well beyond what it cost to buy. What it might potentially lead to in the future, many magnitude moreso. Pretty short sighted to somehow claim that taking apart an electronic device to see whats inside or how it works is wasting something.

If you look at the last photo, those soldering welds are horribly done.

Even in their best day, computers never made Jobs any money. It's all about the media, not as much about the computer used to view and hear the media.

He made more money selling Ipods in 2 years than he made selling computers for 20 yrs.

I would hope people are more crafty than that. People used to sit in their living rooms and build heathkits with their families, now they wont even de-solder a stupid battery.
