I have a couch that is AMAZING for laying/lounging but is terrible for sitting. Laptops require a lap. I'm looking forward to lounge-browsing.

Getting one so I can browse the web while i'm on the toilet :D Not just on the toilet of course but it will be really handy for entertainment on the go, got rid of my iphone because theres better options out there now for me but I do miss the app store a bit so the iPad will fill the void.

Tired of netbooks they are pretty useless for most anything except surfing net and doing email etc... which the iPad will do better IMO so selling my netbook and getting an iPad.

I have recently been looking into getting a small laptop just to do some basic surfing of the web and basic operations. I didn't really want to get a netbook simply cause they're cheap and meh. I didn't want a full blown laptop simply cause I feel it'd be unused in many aspects. So that's when Apple released the iPad and from what I've seen, it couldn't have been a better time. I enjoy sitting down a watching a movie or just have something playing in the background but hate having to be confined to my computer chair when doing so. I'd love to be able to somewhat combine the two but in a more comfortable setting and not feel like I paid for something that's more then what I actually needed.

I'm strongly thinking of getting one and maybe even going for the largest 3G model, cause I hate being out and about without any form of internet connection when needed. But it also makes me want the 64gb WiFi only model simply cause I don't really need the internet all the time that badly. Maybe it'd help make me less reliant on it when I'm out and about.

I think I may be picking one up, but surely not on launch day. I'd still like to see some more of them after they're released and see how they stand up.

MBA far better solution ...

For what most people are mentioning they want their iPad for it appears to me that a MacBook Air would meet ALL your needs far better than the iPad is capable. Only drawback is the higher cost of the Air ...

For exisiting Air owners an iPad wouldn't be as exciting maybe?

...and the undetachable keyboard! I want something I can hold in my hand while reading an ebook or surfing the internet. I've tried reading ebooks on netbooks/laptops by flipping the screen 90 degrees, but the keyboard is always in the way. And reading ebooks in a landscape orientation is less than ideal. See how the Kindle, the Nook, and Sony readers all work in a portrait orientation? But those devices aren't so great when it comes to surfing the internet. The iPad does both. Finally a device that will let me read everything I want to read, without a keyboard! Hurray for no keyboard! I can't say that enough! :D

Honestly, everything that I use my iPod Touch for now. I'm in the military so having a mobile media device is essential and this is the perfect platform. At home, I think it will be the pre-eminent web-surfing, casual computing interface. Perfectly sized and effortless. I'm sure with the added power that it lends, it won't be long till any finanical software that I use (moneydance or iBank) will have a version and my days of really sitting infront of a desk with my iMac will be few and far between - except for when Starcraft 2 is out in retail form...

MBA is very niche product, even more so than the iPad will become. The MBA while being 3x the price has it's limitations that even the most avid fans awknowedge.

Video playback = massive heat on a MBA. The fans goto FULL blast and unless you have headphones, the sound of the fans will overtake the actual crappy speaker.

The MBA has so many issues it's not even worth listing them from hardware, design and performance. If the iPhone can be used as a baseline for what the iPad will be capable of, it's a no brainer the iPad will handle video better, play games better and do many of the basic things I have used a laptop for at 1/3 of the price. The MBA won't meet even HALF my needs as it struggles to play HD video, and clearly not built as a gaming platform.

Saying the "Only drawback is the higher cost of the Air..." ? really? have you used one? I have used the Rev A, B and used a co workers Rev C for a week. I prefer my iPhone over it. Simply not an all around machine.

I've noticed a lot of Apple enthusiasts on these forums. So I just wondered. Is anyone actually really gonna use the iPad cus in my openion it lacks some functions. Or are you just gonna buy it cus it's Apple? :)

It's also worth noting that I have NEVER purchased an Apple product before. The iPad has not only motivated me to change that, but to show up on macrumors forum... something as a PC user I would scoff at typically.

If I end up with one, I'll put it through every conceivable use in every possible place and circumstance just to see if it finds a "natural" place. I'll write a lengthy review for my blog. Then I'll lay it atop some table someplace where other stuff will get piled on, and not notice it for another few months until looking for something else in that stack. If it still works (after a charge, of course) I'll end up giving it to a nephew or niece who desperately wants one. ;)

While I don't doubt their are those that will buy it because it has an Apple logo on it. Their also those of us that simply don't need a full blown laptop for our daily needs, be it work or personal. I have been using my iMac + iPhone and the only real issue I have with the iPhone is dealing with apps such as VNC client and editing a bid or pricing spreadsheet on such a small screen. I use my iMac daily and use things like iDisk to keep my PDF's and bid sheets handy on my iPhone. I even have house plans in PDF form that I can open up on my iPhone to view a measurement or access other information. I have shown builders and job site Forman the information and they all agree it's a great way to deal with the information, but would love to see it on a larger screen. The iPad simply being "a larger iPT" is 100% perfect reason for me to buy it. The added benefits more screen real estate will make my VNC sessions easier to use, viewing plans and bids easier to view and share with someone standing next to me much better.

The company has offered the Panisonic Toughbooks, which probably weigh 7 or 8 lbs, are slower to deal with that my iPhone and the battery life is a joke. They purchase a few netbooks which I tried and returned as they take longer to boot up than it takes me to complete a task on my iPhone even with a small screen.

While some people can't see past the limitations of the device, others see all the potential it has. Apple fan or not, iPhone users already know how useful apps can be and doesn't take much imagination to see how a larger screen can be beneficial using the very same apps we have now :)

Nope. The extra 1.5 pound difference is a huge drawback. Once you shave the weight you tote around there's no going back. I went from a 5.5 pound MBP to a 2.2 pound hackintosh Dell mini9, which I HATE, but for real portability I cannot now conceive of regularly carrying something heavier than the dell mini9. I take my MBP only grudgingly when I know I'll absolutely need it.

Factor in smaller/lighter bags and power bricks related to smaller/lighter devices, and the effect is cumulative.

I commute over 80 miles to work by train so the iPad will be the perfect travel partner for movies and RTS games.

I've had the Air for a couple of years now, and I'll be replacing it with an iPad on day one. I use the Air for a portable browsing/email device mostly at home but travel with it occasionally.

I think using the iPad will be a better experience overall.

For $630 a device that does the following:

1. Allows me to replace my iPhone. Easy access to email is important to work, but I dislike always having it in my pocket. Further, there will be a cumulative savings over the course of a year. Several months a year where I don't travel and where wifi is ubiquitous, there is no need for a data plan.

2. Can park itself in an airplane front pocket or side pocket when things must be stowed, and allows me to do some reading, casual drafting of text, and entertainment on the 75+ flights per year I have.

3. Allows me to leave my notebook at home on trips where I know there is not any time to do serious work and when I have lectures in different classrooms across campus and have to run keynote presentations.

4. Prevents me from working when I take a week-long holiday somewhere. I can stay connected to email, which is important, but prevents me from doing serious work.

Seems like a bargain to me.

errr... so what will you use to make calls then?

This is where I would love to see Apple make an iPhone "Nano" for a better word…
A small dumb phone that just makes and receives calls.

Never going to happen of course, but still…

They should. It seems smart. It could be a dumbphone with built in iPod functionality. Do that, call it a day, make hell money.

The did this with a Motorola phone. It flopped.

Apple won't introduce a phone that doesn't have at least the functionality of the iphone. I am skeptical they would introduce a phone with less resolution than the iphone since it would make another division of iphone applications.

We need a camera!

Personally as of now I'm not planning on getting an ipad. For one reason, NO CAMERA! I know they're probably doing this on purpose and later generations will have one, but I want my all in one media device! And with those later devices I hope it comes with the sd slot. But if anyone has new information or if my information is way off please let me know!

also here's a new iPad commercial i found, its pretty funny.
