LED backlighting is supposed to be "greener" (no idea what that means in a computer), but it's also supposed to extend battery life.

"greener" means better for the environment. You're never supposed to just throw a computer away. There are all sorts of parts (especially screens) that have elements that are really bad for the environment. The LED screens lack the mercury (I think) that current screens have - and are more "green" (environmentally friendly)

actually, what i'd do is wait until AFTER wwdc 2007, and then buy the refurbished version of that generation when the refurbs come availible. refurbs are more thoroughly tested than brandnew computers, and they're also cheaper and look beautiful.. all IMHO of course..

Umm, correct me if I'm wrong, but last time I checked (6 months ago) they didn't make an AutoCAD for OS X. Are you planning to run bootcamp on it? If so you should definitely wait until Leopard (October) since the bootcamp is supposed to be built in.
Ummm can you just upgrade the operationg system like Windows does?. lol October...haha your crazy if u think anyone would wait that long.

A lot of people around here are planning to wait that long, read around - there are dozens of people on this forum planning to wait until October. So no, not crazy.

Just trying to make sure the guy realized the complications involved in running AutoCAD on a mac.

But it is possible...right?

But of that percentage, how many people need a new computer now?

To the OP, I'll say this: if you need a computer now, then buy it now, or wait until after Tuesday to see if there's a new machine released. Apple's release schedule (as well as the tech industry in general) is such that there's always something better a few days/weeks/months away. If we all waited for the next top of the line, brand new shiny whatever from our favorite tech companies, we'd never buy anything. It's as simple as that.

Also, just because something faster comes out doesn't mean that your machine will run any slower. AutoCAD will run just as well on a 2.33 C2D MBP w/ 2GB Ram, the X1600, and traditional fluorescent lighting as it will on a SR-Based 2.4 C2D w/ 2GB RAM, the <insert whatever GPU> and LED backlighting.

If you want to/have got to have the freshest revision, then you may be waiting until at least WWDC. And if you say you can wait 4 weeks, what happens if they aren't released at WWDC. Then you've unnecessarily wasted 4 weeks that you could have been enjoying your new toy. If you're gonna buy a MBP because you need one now, then buy it now (Or Tuesday evening).

I was asking what was wrong with the present displays (referred to as "mediocre" previously), rather than what's great about LED. This whole LED business sounds odd to me; when I think of LED's I think of cheap little blinky lights used on toys and such, not great backlighting! Though I can believe the battery life claim.

Go to Sony Style store, ask them to show you the SZ Premium and TX's laptop and compare the screen with a normal Vaio.

You would be surprised at how LED can improve over normal backlighting.

It's people like you who caused Costco to change there return policy.

Are you saying that you dont like that cosco changed their return policy? If thats what your implying wouldnt you be in the category of people who wanted to take advatage of the return policy? You should check yourself before making dumb comments like that...I just asked a simple question about the return policy...I mean it does exist for a reason right?

I bought the MBP...Woohooo im so happy...this thing is awesome. I know you guys are gonna call me stupid but this is a necessity. Any cool apps out there? ialert you is awesome.

Congrats on your purchase. And hey, if they release a new macbook pro within the next two tuesdays, you should be able to exchange for it if you really want to. :)

Congrats on your new MBP, I bought the high end 15" a week ago with 3GB of ram and I'm thrilled.

There's no guarantee that MBP will be updated to LED's in June and SR may only be utilised by Apple in a limited way compared to pc counterparts. Maybe a boost from 2.33Ghz to 2.4Ghz and longer battery life. I don't see 4GB of ram being an addition as OS X simply doesn't need it (as opposed to Vista needing everything to run fully).

A lot of people here thought MB's would be upgraded based on rumours and were disappointed when those rumours didn't come true the same could happen in June.

You made a great purchase and will get years of use from it.

Neither Vista nor OS X need 4gb of RAM to run well. I'd say that 1GB-2GB of RAM for a modern operating system is plenty for most people and will be for quite some time (at least until the next version of windows or ~5 years). The 4GB limit has little to do with running just the OS/web/word/email or even gaming for that matter (as just about every single game will do well with 2GB).

But 3-4GB will do well with some high-end multitasking and/or 3D modeling. Even still, currently I have AutoCAD 2006, Photoshop 7 (237MB PSD file), iTunes, and Firefox open and I'm still only using about 1.25 GB of RAM.

I did a rendering a few weeks back in VIZ and it took every spare MB of memory and then some. I ended up having to slice it up and it even then, it still wanted 2GB for the rendering alone (not to mention running the OS and other things). Fully using 4GB isnt out of the question for people who are doing renderings (Video, Audio, Modeling). They will be able to take advantage of the additional 1GB of physical RAM and appreciate it very much. I'd definitely look at putting 4GB in a MBP if I could.

Of course you mean if Apple put SR in the next MBP and if they allow it to use 4GB? It would be a waste of money to have 4GB in the current line of MBP's as a percentage of the 4th GB would be overlapped with the 3rd GB and the remainder (around 700mb give or take a few mb's) would never be used.

Yes. That's what I meant by "if I could". (That and if I actually had a MBP. :) )

Actually on numerous occasions when i have spoken to apple they told me that if i bought one and a new one was released within 7 days of mine arriving i was allowed to swap it. Maybe thats just an Apple UK thing. Would be worth you calling apple and asking

This happened to a friend of mine just before the MacBooks were updated; she bought a white MB (she can't remember which model she had initially), then a few days later the updates were announced so I told her to go to the store on Regent St and demand a replacement. She did so, and got the new mid-line model plus 43 pounds in cash back. She was exstatic as she was expecting them to turn around and say no having carted it back to the centre of town. :)

I'm not sure whether it was within 7 or 14 days of her buying it though, but a lot probably depends on who you speak to, how nice (or persistent) you are and ... judging by her, possibly how attractive you appear to them ;)

I would wait one more week until Tuesday. I have posted this in a couple of threads, but a guy at a huge electronics store that sells apple said, (quoting from last Saturday) Macbooks will be this tuesday (which has just happened) and MBPs next Tuesday. This is what his supplier was predicting based on supplies and incoming shipments. Take it for what it is worth but I believe this guy.

You sound like a rumors site... this guy I work with at some big electronics store says this because he knows this and that...:D

This weekend, and im Really looking forward to it. I hear that in like 3 weeks a revision might come out but i cant afford to wait because i need it for my job(I do Accounting with quickbooks and use AutoCAD to draw out some plans). This will be my first Mac ever and im really looking forward to it. Speaking of the Macbook pros that may come out soon I hear the only major update may probably be The LED screen. Whats so great about these? Well ima get the protection plan or something and hope my MBP stops working so they can send me a new one.

Anyways any Suggestions or anything would be apreciated(like what to know about macs and guides or basic stuff).

Thanks.

My dear friend.... I don't mean to insult you but your are using quickbooks... not Final Cut Pro and Shake. Besides.. for the price of 4GB of good RAM you could buy an external HDD or a digital camera. I have asked this question on every post and read all of the specs. Santa Rosa won't give you that much of a performance boost over the current offerings. Faster FSB... so far only .33 Mhz or something like that. Okay 4GB of RAM over 3GB. okay what else? You can always upgrade your HDD so what else. The graphics maybe, but I don't think using QuickBooks will tax that chip that much... not like playing some high-end 3D game or something.

You can wait a month for a possible book that may come out that will be somewhat better than what is available now. Or get your book now and get to work like those person's too busy making money to be bloggin Santa Rosa to death...

Like ME! I gotta go edit some footage bye! ;)

Sorry one more post then work. You are correct and even more to your point is that these tasks really would require a desktop machine. Most pros use desktops to get cheap RAM up to the 4GB+ region. My newspaper has MacPros with 8GB and the biggest benefit is that it can run most apps in memory. For the majority of users 3GB is a lot (and a tad expensive depending on were you get it) so unless that extra gig is needed to shave off a few minutes on your iMovie rendering then why wait a month for something you could be making money with today... besides... you will be asking yourselve the same question two years from now when you are looking for a new MacBook Pro, and Intel's new Santa Claus chip comes out.

That's true, and the majority of my rendering is done at work on a desktop machine that already has 4GB installed. But as far as a personal machine, I only have one computer and it's an older (crappy 5-year old) Sony laptop, so I can't fully take my work home with me anyway. The MBP is not, nor has it ever been, intended to replace my machine at work. I want it as a personal machine that I can take some work home and/or do some side work (CAD, 3D modeling and Video Editing namely).

As for my situation, I need a new computer soon-ish (maybe Sep/Oct/Nov at the latest), but not right now, so the more improvements they make between now and then (Blu-Ray + Lightscribe SuperDrive, DX10 GPU, 250GB 5400RPM drives, LED Backlighting, etc) will just give me that much better of a machine. (Available funds are also an issue.) Even then, I'd probably just run it with the default memory (2GB) installed for a long time and then make the jump to 4GB when the 2GB SO-DIMMS are a lot cheaper than they are now. :)

What do you mean by that? I was always under the impression that Costco had a very generous exchange, return, and warranty policy. Have they recently changed it?
