Having purchased a Nexus One from Google direct I understand the worries people are having over customs and additional charges.
Mine was sent using DHL and they cover the cost of the VAT and invoice you about a month later with an admin fee on top.

I had tracking details with mine and tracked it all the way to the UK and it passed customs no problem. I think the only reason customs would hold it is if its packaged oddly or if it looks suspicious. Because mine was direct from Google it was labeled correctly and customs knew exactly what was in it.

The fact that some people put 'gift' on the box can sometimes cause problems if it clearly isn't a gift. Such that it has an invoice stating that you paid for it :p
It just delays things. Be honest and pay the correct charges and it will fly through customs. Remember, they don't want to have to open up your package but they are forced to if it doesn't meet their requirements.

As a side note, can I ask why people are paying over the odds for the iPad when it's only just come out and the UK release is only like a month away (probably). Silly question I know as everyone goes crazy over new toys :D
