Movie screens, tv screens, computer monitors, laptops, tablets, even books/magazines for that matter, no notch.

It is not a fair comparison, as notch has never been a “feature”, rather a design compromise trying to stretch the screen as far as possible while keeping the cameras/speaker module in place. On bigger devices, like iPad Pros, they just hide the necessary tech behind that uniform bezel. They could have done the same with iPhones, starting from X, giving them a slightly bigger top bezel and smaller side & bottom ones. Instead, Apple went for symmetry, literally pushing themselves into a corner without an easy way out. I do not like the notch either, but I doubt that Apple will go back to bigger bezels to hide it now.

I have had an Xr since the launch, great phone but I still hate the notch. Can't wait til it is gone, rather have a design more like the latest iPad pros. No notch. Other than a smartphone, name another media device with a designed notch.

Ludicrous comparison. Name another media device that depends on reading your face, a proximity sensor, and depth perception.

I have an iPhone X. Had it on launch. I look at all of the evolution happening on the Android side and can see where this is headed: the era of the notch will die. Maybe in a year, maybe two, not sure. But we're close.

The notch is terrible for a number of reasons and needs to die quickly.

What about you: take the poll and vote.
See you in late September for the 3a.m. online order for the new iPhones. :)

Most people really don't care. Count me among them.

The choice is between having a larger forehead/top-bezel, or the phone returning some of that screen space to you in the form of ears.

I bought the X, the XS Max, and I'll get whatever comes out this year and next. My wife, when she upgraded from her 7 Plus to the XS Max didn't say a single word about 'the notch'. I doubt she even really notices it, or if she does, just sees the ears as providing extra data without taking up space on the larger part of the screen. Same when my son upgraded from his 5S to the XS Max; not a single word. I suspect most people fall into this category.

I will always be mystified at the rancor expressed by those vocal few.

It isn’t actually terrible because it contains a lot of technology, it’s more annoying but you soon get used to it

No I don’t get used to it.

It also obstructs content on screen in ways that aren’t acceptable. For instance, zoom into a portrait photo and see what happens.

The notch is a pimple that needs to be zapped.
[doublepost=1555870158][/doublepost]The bottom line is that the notch is a design compromise at the least. When we look at how it affects the usability of software it’s worse.

If tomorrow Apple launched a phone with no notch and all screen at the same price as a phone with a notch I’m certain most people would opt for the notchless one.

That’s because the notch is a compromise that adds no value. Yes the camera and sensors are there but it’s those things alone and not the notch that adds the value. Being creative, there are other ways to implement those things without a notch.

Apple has a few choices: miniaturize the cameras and sensors so they fit in thin bezel, or make them transparent in the glass.

Apple removes the notch and then what? How could people recognize that it's an iPhone without seeing the home screen or whatsoever? They won't remove it completely in my opinion.

Plus, have been "looking" at that notch since September - never actually noticed it's there. Don't understand why it's bothering you so much.

It’s not just me.

The notch causes physical asymmetry, which has unacceptable usability consequences. The only reason it exists is because the parts can’t be made small enough or transparent to be embedded in the glass.

It's definitely more symmetrical than having a hole on the one side, like the Samsung Galaxy. We have a notch for the reasons you mentioned but I don't see it dying in Apple phones, not at least for the next 2-3 years.

at least we have equally sized bezels, unlike the rest of the android phones

The people who don't like the notch are much fewer than those who don't mind it, that's what Apple cares about.

You and me both. Going to sleep early on a day like that usually doesn't work for me. Makes for a long day but, it is worth it one day a year. :)

It's so frustrating because if I go to sleep and wake up before the preorder I'm in the "just woke up haze" and can easily make a mistake. Oh well, looking forward to staying up late this year to order my next phone with a notch.

I don't notice the notch at all nor do I care when I now look on purpose for it. I think it works very well from a design standpoint but I care a lot more about function than design.
As for Apple getting sued - they get sued if a box is placed slightly crooked on a shelve at a store. They probably have more lawyers than software engineers.

To me the notch is advertising for apple. Someone sees your screen with a notch, they'll know it is an iPhone.

The notch is like an apple tattoo on your forehead. You don't notice it but others looking at you will.

Exactly, just like up until the X, Apple's "tattoo" was the phone with circle home button. It's recognizable everywhere.
