Just got my MKB and 13” M4 yesterday and it’s true that the balance of the combo is different than the previous version and can certainly tip backwards more easily. But that’s only when you’re not typing / working with your hands on the keyboard, as god intended. I’m guessing that for consumption purposes, it might be best to get a folio cover of some type that offers better balance options. In normal work use, on my lap, I’m totally fine with how it behaves. The new aluminum keyboard cover feels great and the trackpad is way more responsive, plus having the iPad pushed further away helps with typing, where my fingers don’t have a tendency to hit the iPad.

For watching movies, no, I don't consider MacBooks to be superior, unless you get a Pro. And even then, I find the iPad OLED screen to be way better.

I prefer not to have to hold the thing. I can put the macbook anywhere and adjust the screen angle without having to worry about it tipping. OLED would be nice, but still would rather the macbook over an iPad. You can do so much more with it.

That's a valid argument. I do own both a MacBook and an iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard, and they have different use cases for me.

The MacBook mostly only stays on a desk connected to a Thunderbolt dock and a 27" screen, and then comes to the office with me, where there's the same setup.

The iPad is with me everywhere. On the couch, kitchen table, during trips on a train, it's basically "my bigger iPhone" that I use when an iPhone would be too cramped. And I can also adjust the angle the way I want it, without needing to worry about breaking some MacBook hinge.

The MacBook is more of an office tool for me with all the advanced stuff. The iPad is the "go everywhere, entertainment tablet with a keyboard".

I personally just don't understand that use case of the iPad. I've tried, twice, I wanted to like it because lots of people like but I couldn't see the point. My phone and macbook do everything better. If I liked creating digital art or handwriiten notes then yes, but otherwise I don't see how it fits.

Maybe apple should do a recall, this product was clearly rushed. I wouldn't even take one for free let alone pay a dime for it. But $450CAD for it is highway robbery. May as well empty my bank account while you're at it. If I got one for free, I'd either run it over with my truck or throw it off a cliff into the river.

I guess in the end it's a matter of personal preference. Some prefer it this way, others prefer it that way. And that's why we have so many products. I don't think anyone should force themselves to like something if it doesn't fit.

The Magic Keyboard exemplifies everything wrong with the iPad. At every turn, it's fighting against you.
The magic keyboard ( the newest generation ) is the reason I upgraded to this iPad. The feeling of a Mac, but the iPad allows me to connect w/ 5G (I do not want to waste my phone battery since I connect remotely for my work often and hours at a time) and for 10$ a month as part of my data plan, has a touch screen (I complete and sign documents on a daily basis), allows me to connect to my remote windows desktop without hesitation, and allows for maximum entertainment (try downloading netflix movies on a mac....you cant because there's no app) within the apple ecosystem and otherwise, and for some folks the ipad + magic keyboard does work better than a laptop/mac.

The previous magic keyboard did not tip over like that when used on a couch or bed. I’m not going to return the keyboard over it but it is quite annoying.

Yeah it did. This annoys me daily.

This. Shocked that more people don't realize that the Apple bluetooth keyboard is pretty much the same keyboard minus the case. So people are paying $300 for the case portion. Great deal! $300 for a case with poor quality materials and will rip and fall apart over time.

I’ve been using my 13 inch iPP with MKB on my lap (can’t use in bed because my unruly dog would scratch that gorgeous screen in a heartbeat) and find it perfectly stable. But maybe that’s because my preferred viewing angle for the screen is more vertical than others reporting here—at least when I use it on my lap.

Once again, it looks like this is a case of YMMV (your mileage may vary). I value reports like the one from OP but suggest that others who are considering the MKB try it out for themselves to see how it works for them.

As for the suggestion of using an Apple Bluetooth Keyboard instead of the MKB, that isn’t really a comparable situation. For one thing, you’d need not only the keyboard but also a Magic Trackpad and, for another, that arrangement might work well in a static use case but is virtually worthless when portability is desired.

I really liked my original MKB when used with my 2018 iPP. This new MKB is even better IMHO—the keys are better and the trackpad feels more responsive. The latter is a function not only of the revised keyboard hardware but also the improved speed of the M4 iPP itself. Bottom line, coming from a 2018 iPP 12.9 inch with MKB, the new M4 iPP 13 inch with MKB feels like enough of an improvement that I’ve decided it’s a keeper.

Meh, as someone who has watched maybe 100 movies/tv shows while lying in hotel beds, the old 12.9”+MK did this also.

You don’t need all those damn pillows for your head. Put one behind the iPad. Problem solved.

I use my MacBook Pro exclusively in-bed. I'll be replacing it with a MacBook Air in due time. 13" M4 iPP is twice as much (at retail) when you include the MKB and it simply wouldn't work well for me on the lap in bed.
