Alum iMac 1.1 update produces new color profile

"Posted: Sep 15, 2007 7:07 AM

Anyone else notice? Go to system preferences - displays. There is a color LCD profile. The old iMac profile is history. I still like my profile better. I have a Spyder Express monitor profile that is still better than this one."

this was not on my machine.......anyone get this? i am wondering about doing a fresh install and doing the update to see what happens?

So, that would represent the colors of the background as they are intended in OS X. Why you would be getting different readings, I don't know. But, taking color measurements within the Operating System will not represent the actual hardware as much as just what the OS itself is telling the monitor.

He was measuring on a photo of the screen. While this doesn't give 100% accurate results, it at least gives you an idea of the difference between the left and right sides, which is quite big in my opinion.

I did the same thing with two Samsung panels, one TN and one S-IPS, and there wasn't much difference in temperature across the screen. The TN was a bit darker in the top border though, but that's the characteristics of a TN panel. The S-IPS panel was extremely consistent both in colors and illumination.

H-IPS is supposed to be an improvement over S-IPS but it's sure not noticable in this display.

If you check their signatures you'll notice that they have the 20" model. So it's obviously only about that one. Probably to adress the "gradient issue".

jajo,

I just wanted to point something out.

You show the color-picker screenshots, and those don't actually represent the video screen.

The color codes and shade numbers presented represent what OS X is seeing itself.

To get a measurement of the yellowing on the screen (as caused by the screen itself), you would need to make sure that your computer was sending identical color codes to each pixel on the screen, and then measure the color readings from an external device.

Of course, I am not color-picking on a screenshot. The color-picker is used on a photo of the screen. I used the same photograph to pick the color on both sides of the screen. White balance in camera was set to the center of the screen, where blue meets yellow. I think it is an accurate test.

OK, that makes more sense. I'm sorry if I missed that part in the post.

I was thinking that you were doing all this from the screen. But, if you were doing it from a photo of the screen, then that probably is a more accurate measure as long as your lighting and such is even in the room.

That's an odd thing though. On my two screens and in all the pictures I've seen the yellow tint has been strongest towards the middle of the screen. That it's not the same on your display would indicate that this issue isn't the same on every screen and might not even exist on every unit. That at least give me some hope.

my first one had the yellow in the middle.......first replacement has it on the right hand side.

My first iMac had 1/4 blue to the left and 3/4 yellow (the rest). This replacement machine has more 50-50, which is actually even more annoying.

Yeah I can see why that would be more annoying. But hey, it's moving in the right direction, just two more replacements and you'll get rid of it! ;)

From the poll. It seems that it isn't that much of a problem. I think it will be okay for me to get the 24" based on this poll, and my experience with them at the Apple Store. My GF will be using it for her day to day photography and teaching, so even if it did have a tint I don't think she would notice...

Besides... she edits photos by the numbers, not by inaccurate color profiles.

Yeah, you are right. I am actually optimistic.

Check your PM btw.

Oh well, I don't trust on soft proofing anyways. I prefer the good old printed proof over everything. Who cares about correct colours for websites anyways. Hard to keep under control. Everyone has different brightness/contrast settings and displays anyways. ;)

Now it is starting to look exactly like my previous iMac, except the bleeding that still is there...

At least this allows me to use the ColorSync profile I did on my other iMac and I get 3/4 of the screen almost useable for editing photos.

Where is the light coming from? :)

i have another replacement on the way and will report when it arrives.

hope the 3rd time is a charm!

Mine came to Sweden today so I'll probably have it delivered tomorrow. Too bad I'm going away tomorrow so I can't check it until thursday.

Hopefully it will be better.

Too bad you can't check it out before you sign for it. Would be kind of cool if you could check it out, and if it was bad ask the driver to lose it so you could get it covered and get your money back ;)

If it's no better than your last one, then you'll likely have to either pay a restocking fee or just live with it.

Of course, if you are past the 14-day return period at this point (from the date the original one shipped), then you may be out of luck anyway as far as refunds go.

I returned my first 24" because of yellowing in the middle. Got another one today, but this one seems to have the left 1/4 ok, but the right 3/4 brighter/more yellow... Calibrated it with a Spyder2 Express, and it looks very yellow.. The aluminium in Safari is supposed to look more blue than brown right?

ouch! my replacement (3rd) is due tomorrow. i have no confidence what-so-ever.

are you going to return it?

more to come from me when the replacement arrives

I dont really know.. It looks ok when Im using the sRGB profile, but the Spyder2 makes it very yellow (too yellow for my taste). I dont really want to wait another 2-3 weeks, since I already have waited probably 5 weeks in total already. Maybe Apple can ship another one, and I can keep this untill the replacement arrives?

for this replacement they let me keep the one i have now until the replacement comes in. they put a charge on my CC but will be removed as soon as it get to them.

my original order was on aug 12 and i have maybe used it for a total of 24 hrs 13 has been calibrating! ha

Ok, so maybe I can do the same thing. I really want to keep this one because its such a hassle to install all the programs, etc. but I know I will regret it if I dont return it.. If I still dont get a perfect screen on my 3rd try I guess Ill just have to give up...

Just to make sure, the aluminium in Safari, etc. is not supposed to look yellow/brown right, but a neutral grey? I just dont understand why Spyder2 makes the screen looks so yellow/brown...

preaching to the choir..........i did not do anything with this one except about 200gb of music.

i would try calibrating w/o the spyder...........see what results you get.

you should see safari as grey/steel color.
