iMac 27'' or custom built? Can't decide...

I think it depends on two things:
Answer those two questions and there you are.
- how upgradeable/customizable you want your computer to be in the future
- if you want to run Snow Leopard or Windows 7

I actually plan to run my Linux distro of choice with win7 in a VM for testing. Also, being able to upgrade is important to me.
Hoho so I think you are good for the DIY PC. But do you plan to install Mac OS? I am not into Hackintosh and seems like a real hassle...
Then it sounds like you'd be better off with a custom built computer that's easier to expand in the future. You could use the difference for a LED 24" panel, if that's what you want.
BTW, you didn't include substitues for a bluetooth keyboard + touchpad mouse + webcam/mic + Ir + Snow Leopard + iLife '09. Add that up, especially comparable software, and the prices aren't that far apart anymore. Remember that you pay for the whole package; recreate it fully, otherwise the comparison isn't valid.

Help, I can't decide. I have put together a custom PC to compare with the new 27'' iMac. Can anyone please give me some advice either way? I made this chart up really quick in photoshop for you all.
Reiterating the obvious. I like how you put apple logo as a feature
bluetooth keyboard: Already have one
touchpad mouse: I prefer my RAZER mouse because it is higher quality and is more practical.
webcam/mic: Already have
Snow Leopard: Don't want
iLife '09: I own office 2007 and adobe creative suite through my university, Vegas for video, so I think I'm good
Now the trolls even start threads making us believe that they really want our opinion on what they should buy.

If you didn't want the mac OS why are you even looking at this machine? Obviously you would get a better windows machine by building your own...
My point was that it's included with the iMac deal, but you didn't include it in your comparison, hence your comparison is invalid and will, obviously, always be in favor of a custom built PC.
But since you don't care about it being an all-in-one, you'd like to be able to expand it, you have most of the peripherals and software already, and you don't care about paying more for esthetics, I'm pretty sure Macs aren't for you, and your money is best spent on a normal PC.
Mac OS is by far better at VMs than any linux or winblows. I use VMs (vmware and XEN) in all OSs everyday and Mac OS + VMWare Fusion is by far the best desktop variant. Save yourself time and hassle get the mac.
Its because you don't automatically agree with the poster. Don't let it get to you. Same thing happened to me when I was thinking of getting a Mac Pro or build a workstation. This forum was useless for an objective opinion. I had to borrow a Mac Pro from a friend and find out for myself.
27 inch IPS LED screen?
I guess that will set you back over 1k.
I don't think people realize how nice a screen apple have put in the iMac 27 inch, it's pretty much half the value of the entire computer for the highend iMac.
I'm not going to bash you for your preference or call you a troll, but if you don't want OS X, you shouldn't even be considering a Mac. It's a waste of money for what you want.
What if I went on a mini cooper fan club page and asked,
"Should I buy a mini cooper or a GMC Sierra pickup?. The GMC has tons more storage, a big V8engine, can off road far better and can tow 10 tons (or whatever).
The mini has a dinky 4cyl, can't off road, very little storage and cannot tow anything. It does have a spiffy looking spedometer however.
Please help me, I can't figure out what I want here. Oh, and I don't care about gas milage and I don't care about the looks of a car. All I want is utility. I work on a farm. Help me please, I just don't know what to do."
I would obviously making an unfair comparison and be cherry picking the benefits of the truck and ignoring the benefits of the mini cooper (handling, parking, city driving, fun, ect...)

Because of that, there is obviously no reason for this person to get a mac. The reason people think he is a troll (and who really knows if he is or not) is because he threw up an obviously heavily unbalanced comparo to prove a point, complete with multipliers in red, to make them obvious... and then added "Apple Logo" as a sarcastic little jab.
If you don't care about running mac os, aren't interested in apple software, and dont care about the appearance of the machine, then you don't need a mac. So it can be deduced that the only reason you are on here is to stir up frustration.... thus, people think you are a troll.

Or perhaps he has never owned a Mac, saw how great the new iMacs are and wanted to see if it would fit what he is looking for. Just because it doesn't (and he has obviously realized it) doesn't mean he's a troll.
So if you're not just a troll, why the heck did you include 3x 21.5" Acer displays in your comparison? If you were truly trying to compare the two systems, why wouldn't you include a similar 27" LCD LED backlit display with IPS? Not to mention, you've already come to the conclusion that a lot of what's included with the iMac is redundant for you because you've already purchased similar hardware and software... so why would you even consider buying one?
