Just been reading this thread and another one linked to it and some people seem pretty convinced its driver/software related. Two people with what looks like near identicle IR to me said they fixed it by going back to

" Nvidia webdriver: 387.10.10.10.25.158 and CUDA Driver Version: 387.178 "

However they are running 10.13 and im running 10.15

Am i correct in assuming this driver probably won't work on Catalina ?

Probably not; I am using webdriver 387.10.10.10.40.138 and no CUDA drivers. I had similar awful IR, gone now entirely after disabling Metal.

Hopefully newer iMacs work better with Metal, or it is simply a form of "planned obsolescence" once displays are getting older...

I don't trust apple enough to have fixed the issue on the newer models so im heistent to upgrade to a newer model. I may consider downgrading to High Sierra.

Im guessing you didn't get any visual artefacts etc when disabling metal on high sierra ?

Did you had any side effects disabling Metal?

I experience some black boxes appearing for a few seconds randomly over the items in the menu bar. Not too disturbing though, as it happens only a couple of times an hour.

Only minor issues as previously mentioned; but you have to test for yourself, as our macs are different.

Ok. Im thinking if i do downgrade i may as well go all the way down to Sierra to test that out as this issue clearly started with High Sierra and id rather avoid any minor issues.

next step is figuring out where to get sierra from and how easy it is to revert back from Catalina to it.

Yes, Metal first appeared in High Sierra, hence the need to disable it. Unlike Mojave and Catalina, High Sierra still supports OpenGL.
Well, one need High Sierra for unlock with Apple Watch... :D

Just to confirm, you switched back to High Sierra, disabled Metal and this fixed the IR ? Im not sure i can go back to an OS that old as a lot of my audio software requires newer operating system but at the same time this IR is getting so bad i may actually consider trying it out.

I have a Late 2015 Retina 27-inch iMac with a brand new OEM display installed a year ago.
The original display turned pink. I get slight image retention with Mojave on the left and right edges. It looks like scroll bars. It fades away after about 10 minutes. I wiped the drive and installed High Sierra. I typed the 2 commands in Terminal to disable Metal. I shut off the iMac and turned it back on. The image retention still happens.

I've had my screen replace twice for pink tinge edges with AC in house, last one in February this year, all good so far. Also a late 2105 27" iMac.

@ThugFreak Check you have a com.apple.CoreDisplay.plist file in Library/Preferences and preview it with get info. It should look like this:

Then, your Metal is still enabled. Those 2 commands create that file; reapply the commands and check the file com.apple.CoreDisplay.plist is created.

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.CoreDisplay useMetal -boolean no

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.CoreDisplay useIOP -boolean no

Have the file been created? You may have to disable SIP in recovery partition with "csrutil disable" command in Terminal.

Yes it is. You have to restart in recovery partition and apply in Terminal there.
Later you can re-enable SIP with "csrutil enable". SIP may block the creation of that file.

Restart your mac and after the tone keep pressing the "option" key until a menu is displayed. Then choose Recovery instead of your boot partition.

Option key have to be kept depressed instead of repeatedly pressing on it.

You may not have a Recovery partition if MacOS is not properly installed. But you can create one if you do not have it.

Definitely, High Sierra is not properly installed. You can try create a Recovery Partition or better reinstall MacOS since you have nothing important on it. It should create a Recovery partition upon install.

You may also wish to install it on a HFS+ partition instead of APFS, since I am not sure how reliable APFS is in HS:
