For those having retention issues, WITH the vertical lines.

There was a thread on Apples support forums:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8092630?page=1

It seems to be a software issue with Nvidia GPU's. (that's why the terminal command I mentioned above fixed it, and it doesn't occur in windows)

Apple knows about it, but are not talking about it nor fixing it. (I hope they aren't ignoring it because of the Apple/Nvidia falling out)

I emailed Tim about the issue, so let's hope something gets done.

It's def happening with integrated GPU's (i.e. Intel) as well. My Late 2013 MBP has been having this issue since the first moment I installed High Sierra.

Just retention, or the vertical lines also?

Retention. It was retaining on one aspect of the desktop under HS and then a different aspect Mojave. Which makes sense if they simply modified the original glitch inherent in Metal 2.

Apple has reached out to me and is indeed looking into the matter.
[doublepost=1544899480][/doublepost]
You mean that the GPU is heating the panel from the *back* of the display which somehow increases image retention?
But then any high-demanding task would cause it, not only a software bug.

Well my platform controller reaches temperatures of 78C, and GPU high 50’s when nothing is running, something is not right.

What do you use to read temperature? Our 2013 iMac lcd pooped out on us a couple years ago and we just use an ASUS in front of it. Sometimes it doesn't want to wake up though.

Macs fan control. There are multiple programs that can read temps though.

just made a reg because i've had the same problem. This fixed it for me:

Running 10.13.3 (17D102) on iMac (27-inch, Late 2013) , NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2 GB

Nvidia webdriver: 387.10.10.10.25.158 and CUDA Driver Version: 387.178
I tried almost every possible combination between the CUDA/Web driver and this one solved the problem more or less. Images start "burning in" after 30 minutes instead of minutes.

It's a software problem introduced with High Sierra and their ongoing idiotic "war" with nVidia.

Instead of acting like I am an idiot did anyone actually try my solution of enabling screensaver before your screen locks?

At least maybe testing it?

Because I noticed it was a problem because even though my screen was off I would turn my computer back on and see the the pixels temporarily burned in.

Seriously.

I noticed this on my 2015 27" last winter. In retrospect, I think it had shown signs of this way earlier. Got much worse very quickly, esp. around the edges of the screen. I had the screen replaced under warranty in May of 2018 and have not had the issue return since.

I never updated from El Capitan until after I'd had the screen replaced, so it wasn't an issue related to High Sierra.

Screensavers don't really help, at least not in my experience, because the pixels get burned in during normal usage. (Say you're working in Photoshop for five minutes, then tabbing out to Safari -- boom, there's Photoshop icons all over the webpages now.) You'd have to run your screensaver every five minutes for it to be of any use.

The problem is not directly related to High Sierra...
My iMac 2013 had image retention from the start.
In my opinion heat causes the image retention, I first noticed it in 2013 after playing games.
And I remember reading this already was an issue years before 2013.

I had my 2014 imac screen replaced 3 or 4 times because of image retention under apple care.

Basically you are screwed. The problem will get worse over time until retention occurs even after keeping a window up on the screen for 5 minutes.

Some people "claim" their 2014 and 2015 iMacs don't have image retention, but my theory is that they haven't owned or used the macs long or hard enough yet to develop or notice the issue.

Some people naively claim this is a non issue (because they havent experienced it) and they just link you to the apple page on image retention (which does not properly cover this problem). Those people have no idea what they're talking about.

If you have apple care I would strongly advise you to open a case and send them as much picture and video evidence as you can. The retention will most definitely become worse over time and you need to get a replacement screen ASAP and get it replaced under apple care once it develops retention too. Keep doing that until you run out of apple care and then either sell the imac (and hopefully disclose that it has this flaw) or try and get apple to send you a new one.

(FYI if you haven't heard of the image retention issue before, try going here https://marco.org/rmbp-irtest.html in full screen on your mac and leaving it for 5 minutes without looking at the pattern yourself, then full screen this grey color https://i.imgur.com/YFPLXuj.png and see if the boxes burnt in)

ONCE AGAIN: if you have never experienced image retention before then please don't try and tell the rest of us that it doesn't exist. You either got lucky, haven't owned/used the computer long enough to cause the issue yet, or you haven't noticed the problem (the retention is more noticable when you switch to a grey backdrop from a light interface).

and in closing: AVOID ALL LG DISPLAYS WHENEVER YOU CAN, THEY ARE ALL COMPLETELY GARBAGE.

good luck OP.
[doublepost=1553910392][/doublepost]Yup, I have been a "Videophile" for about 30 years, and I NEVER (knowingly) ever bought anything with the LG logo on it! It's cheap Chinese CLAP! A RE-NAMED company. I forgot what they used to be called, something like 1980s onward RCA TV levels of NON-quality. I have the Late 2012 iMac 27" and noticed some retention on my desktop just now. IIRC, it's about $600.00 for a new screen. I cracked mine bc some IDIOT 'techie' told me the screen is adhered with magnets.

The company is South Korean.
Goldstar = Lucky Goldstar = LG
I believe that the iMac screens were once held in place with magnets, but I could be wrong.

Yep, the 2009 and 2010s. They’re a great design. All you need is suction cups.

Thanx. We had one of these in the 60s.https://www.google.com/search?q=Cla...AUIDigB&biw=1147&bih=457#imgrc=fxb8w_HYfpoNlM:
Around 1967ish my dad got a color TV, bc he was a salesman for an appliance store in Vancouver. I still remember watching cartoons in color for the first time. (Jetsons, Flintstones, etc.)

just noticed this on my late 2015 imac

thankfully it is not glaring. but it looks like permanent burn in.

i say this caue i notice the pattern fits my bootcamp install and i have effectively not run it this whole year

Hey guys,

Been following this thread for a little while now.

Happy to know I am not the only one with this issue also.

I have an iMac, here are the details
Screenshot 2020-01-28 at 22.15.29.png

My Apple care literally expired the day before I noticed screen retention/burn-in - I bought this machine for over 4k in 2016 and got the apple care day of purchase too.

From October-December 2019 I was on three months sabbatical from work and was studying for the majority of this time and started to notice the sites I was learning from would become imprinted on-screen in red after closing the window - the dock at the bottom would also become imprinted on screen in red if I moved the dock to my secondary display.

The screen saved/display off fix sort of works but if I am currently working on some code for a few hours and the screensaver/display does not go off the problem is really apparent now more and more each use.

I also did not notice this issue until the time between October 2019 and now but it could be because of the OS updates, maybe not - I have been told it could be the screen or logic board or both.

I have spoken to Apple several times and they mostly shoo me away and recently I spoke to an independent authorised repair shop and they quoted me over the phone for £1600-£1800 for a new screen and possibly logic board replacement - so I decided to get a 2019 MBP I saw on offer at my wife's work in the January sales.

I wanted to get Apple care for the new MBP, I knew I would because of the issues I have heard about the new models of MBP between 2016-2019, but before I could I had to validate purchase date to get initial warranty set up (because it was not bought directly from Apple) so I then spoke to Apple again to make sure my purchase date was validated from Apple.

On the above note when the purchase date was validated and I could then purchase applecare there was also a link pointing to consumer law and I spoke to Apple again, and again they tried to get rid of me in the most friendly manner using uppercase letters and exclamations etc. Then I mentioned the consumer law thing and they went silent for a bit and then tried to suggest I just take my iMac into an Apple store... yeah like I can just walk the streets with a 27" 5k iMac under my arm, like that does not say 'steal my computer'!

It almost feels like since Jobs passed apple has become pure **** with the longevity and quality of their products and customer service which will end up affecting their customer retention - I am considering either making my own machine as my next hardware journey or maybe, shock horror, migrating back to a pre-built PC and back on windows after nearly 2 decades off Windows!

I will call Apple and discuss consumer law with them this week - worst-case scenario, I have a replacement Mac and if a fix is not going to happen on the iMac I will give it to my parents as they will not be as intensive a user as I am.

Sucks though, my last iMac is still going 11+ years to now as my parents have it and no issues other than slow down due to its age and lack of updates because it is too old for the Apple OS updates.

Really? You do realize that Jobs kicked it in 2011 so the supply chain in use for the earlier iMacs was probably created under his watch?

Some folk never quit with the "When Steve was alive" nonsense.

Geezle-Pete. Would you give it a rest? No-one knows what Apple would be longer today if Job's hadn't left us, so quit with the speculation already!

As for Apple asking you to bring the iMac in, bad news pal, under British Consumer Law they have every right to ask you to do that.

Apple are required under consumer law to provide a warranty. They are not required to provide another means to get the iMac to them.

Hello guys, after few weeks investigating this problem; I do think this is a widespread problem for 2015 5K model. I personally also have this problem. Is there a way to "force" Apple to get responsible? e.g. offering new display panel free of charge. Well this is a $800 problem caused by Apple (or LG).
