Buy now. You are drawing against very good odds you will get a good one. If you are one of the unfortunate few who get a bad one, you can always exchange it. One thing is certain: if you wait, that is the only way you are guaranteed to not get a good one, because you will have nothing. ;)

I was in the same boat, and I ordered my 24" the day Leopard was set, and mine is perfect. I was worried, and now I am thrilled. It is a great machine.

Exactly my point. I'm going to give Apple a little bit more time for their 'fix'. If it doesn't come I'll buy it anyway. If it's really bad I can take it back...or even get a refund.

This thread is becoming quickly the thread of 'non-freezing' iMac posts. This is really great because so far I haven't heard anything but complaints around this forum. Keep on posting your good experiences and show the potential buyers that only a small number of iMacs are the faulty ones.

Even if you get a faulty one you can still take it back for a good one.

I agree that the posts are encouraging... but I had a freeze happen on the display model at a store (Fry's Electronics). I was opening iPhoto and the finder hung up. No spinning ball, nada. The mouse arrow was normal and moved normally... but clicking didn't register anything. I had to assume that this was the freeze everyone talks about? Anyways, it wasn't cool. I went about my business and came back when my shopping was done- machine was still frozen. I rebooted it so as not to totally discourage potential customers. I think I'm either going to wait for rev B or buy a White 2.16 at a big discount. Even with AppleCare, it would just be a huge PITA to return a computer.

Yes, this is the lock-up everyone has been talking about. Guess what? I tested every single display iMac (4 of them) in our local Apple Store and not a single one had the Freeze problem. So really, if you get a bad one, just return it. You'll get a good one eventually.

the apple care certificate came by email and said the following under the products covered bit:

IMAC (20-INCH MID 2007)

which makes me think they are still shipping original stock (in the uk at least)

fingers crossed it has no issues!!

Hi all,
With all the issues with the new iMac (heating, freezing, gradient issue etc), should I wait for them to fix everything or buy one now.
I have been waiting for Leopard and now I am reading about the problems people are having and don't want to be disappointed as this would be my first Mac.
I am also going to buy a Mac Pro but I have been reading that it is going to get an update soon, so I am waiting for now.

What do you think?

Cali

1.) There is no heating issue.
2.) The gradient issue is not a 'problem'. Apple are unlikely to change the supplier of their screens or the screen specs anytime soon.
3.) The freezing issue only affects a certain percentage of iMacs. It'll be fixed in a couple of weeks anyway through a software update.

Well...

I just bought a 24" iMac on Sunday, and I think it's beautiful. Unfortunately, it didn't come with Leopard preinstalled, so I had to insert that crappy drop-in DVD.

What's bad is that Friday I went to my Apple store to get Leopard, installed it on my PowerBook G4 with no problems, but then after installing it on my PowerMac G5, it locked me out, and I couldn't even boot from the optical drive AT ALL. Spent 2 hours on the phone with Apple with an idiot who sounded like he was on speed to no avail. Luckily I went to Fry's and was able to get a harddrive enclosure and was able to get at my old G5's data. I also upgraded my iMac's RAM to 4 GBs. Fry's had the 4 GB kit for $189! Woo-hoo!

Now...if I could just get BootCamp to work.

I've had a 2.8ghz 24" since august and used it heavily since. It's crashed just once, the screen is fine, and I've had almost zero issues with it. It's a great machine.

Perfectly running 24" iMac here. No problems whatsoever. Just jump the gun and buy it now. You won't regret it; it's a wonderful machine.

Same here. I have the 24", my first mac, and I love it. I only have it one week today and so far, so good. My only problem is I can't get my printer to work with it. No mac driver? It's a HP Laserjet 1020. Other than that, I'm enjoying the whole experience. :)

mine is a wk41 machine and by the looks of the box its come with tiger pre-installed (i.e. picture of the mac with tiger on the screen on the box)

will have to wait to get it home to see what the deal is!

I've been waiting also to get one (no hurry, mostly waiting on Leopard). Might wait a little longer just to get the ones that have Leopard already installed (which I know is happening real soon, if not right now). My 1.8 G5 w/the cruddy graphics card NEEDS replacing for what I am planning on doing (high end graphics/animation).

If anyone this debating this even more, just think.....EARLY CHRISTMAS!

I am happy to see all the positive comments, like people said we only hear the negative stuff. No decisions yet but I feel more comfortable about purchasing now.

just set my new baby up - it has tiger installed - just wondering whether or not to bother with leaopard yet as it has been reported to make the freezing issue worse!! no freezes for me yet!!

so i installed leopard and touch wood there have been no problems so far - multiple programs including itunes and video! i have never been on a faster computer - this is amazing!!! looks soooooo good!

1Gb - i havent really pushed it that hard yet - will install photoshop cs3 later!

will also be upgrading next month to 2Gb

Might want to think of spending the extra $30-35 and going to 3GB. Leopard seems to bloat application memory usage a bit.

Just bought 2.0Ghz 20" iMac with Tiger preinstalled and upgraded to Leopard on Up To Date programme. 2Gb of ram - extra 1Gb stick from Crucial - seems to be plenty even for Photoshop.

I think now is a good time to buy as you get both OS-s so you have the choice should you have any issues with Leopard.

My screen is fine, but it was terribly calibrated out of the box. Yes it still has a slight gradient, but unlike some posters I believe this is simply viewing angle related - from 10 feet away it vanishes. But do recalibrate using the advanced settings - big improvement. I consider it perfectly usable now for Photoshopping etc.

i got my 24" at the end of august and it is great! i never got the freezing issues others have had. i did get a 1.1 firmware bug where i was unable to shut down or restart (always had to press the power button) but that is now fixed with leopard. :D
