buying now vs. waiting????

You can call me a Mac convert since getting my first Mac(a MacBook) for work. Now I am seriously thinking about getting an iMac for use at home and non-work related things.

I am reading about all of the problems with the 20" iMac screen, freezing issues and Leopard upgrade issues. Would it be prudent for me to purchase one now or later? I am mainly going to be running InDesign, Photoshop, iWork, email, and music. I think the 24" is too big for my needs??? My main concern is freezing and a lower quality monitor.

What do you think?

I have had my 24 inch since October 13th, and have not had even ONE issue.

No freezing, screen problems, etc.

Get one now. Any issue there is (minus screens) can be updated by apple. and that is IF you get those issues.

I'll be one of those silent lurkers that'll speak up for you.

I got the iMac 20" 2.0 last week and I have experienced no freezing issue at all.

And I don't know what's wrong with the screen for general iMacs, but mine looks stunning to me already.

Ive had mine since they launched. No problems at all. Couldn't be happier with the machine.
Ditto here. I said it a few posts back, and I'll say it again: it's a wonderful machine. And it's FAST! I don't know about the stock 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor, but the 2.8GHz Core 2 Extreme really screams. Having 4GB of RAM, I'm sure, helps as well.

Does anyone think that the iMac's are going to have any processor or graphics updates soon? I'm looking to replace my desktop windows PC with a Mac, so just trying to decide between an iMac or a Mac Pro

Unless you mean May ~ July, then no, I don't think so. However, no one knows what Steve has up his mind so I would wait 2 more days.

I have an Aluminum iMac and can't be happier with it. It's pretty decent for gaming as far as I know (runs C&C3 flawlessly).

12 months seems like a pretty long time to wait for a speed bump don't you think?

The MacRumours buyers guide says "Buy only if you need it - Approaching the end of a cycle" as the last update was August 2007

I think that if the iMacs are to use the new Pentryn chips, they won't be updated any time soon. If the iMacs are to be updated at MacWorld, or any time soon, I wouldn't expect anything very significant.

Remember, 185 days/cycle is only an average.

Not expecting anything significant either as they had a complete redesign in August, but still, as has been previously posted on MacRumours, if they update the CPU's in the MBP's and leave the iMacs as they are, the MBP's will be more powerful than the desktop option.

I think I'll wait for a CPU upgrade... and then BUY :)

You also should keep in mind that since Macs use Intel processors, the CPU should get updated more often than the PPC days. I wouldn't doubt that they get an update tomorrow or in the next month now that the mobile Penryn's are out.

Someone can wait more than others do.

I decided to switch from my Pentium III PC with Windows ME:mad: in spring 2006. I wanted a Mac. An iMac.

Then, rumors about Leopard realease in fall 2006 made me wait.

In fall 2006, Leopard was delayed to may/june 2007.

In spring 2007, Leopard was delayed to october 2007.

I kept my PC for all those months.

In october 2007, I was willing to buy my iMac, but the "freeze" issue scared me.

The day after the "freeze" fix (10.5.1), that is on november 16, 2007, i bought my iMac.

It took a long time, more than expected, but the "value for money" of fall 2007 is obviuosly better than in spring 2006.

Yeah, I agree. When it comes to computers, I can be quite patient...Especially for Apple computers.

I was going to buy a Macbook Pro last summer but I was waiting for Leapord. Then the iMac's got a complete revamp and I thought, I'll wait for the Macbook Pro to get updated...It still hasn't.

I'm now in the market for both a Macbook Pro and an iMac but I am still waiting for the MBP to be updated, and I am now waiting fro a CPU boost in the iMac.

I can happily wait as long as these take...I currently have a high spec Core 2 Duo PC with Windows XP which I will keep using until these 2 machines are updated (all hopes pinned on MacWorld though :))
