the gloss on my new 24" imac's screen is about as distracting as the gloss on a train window - when you're looking outside at the scenery going past, you only look at your reflection if you actually focus on it, and it aint distracting.

my tv is glossier.

all old crt monitors were glossy, and nobody complained back then.

this whole issue is a serious case of making mountains out of molehills.

Agreed 100%! As soon as the LCD projects an image, there is no glare.

I wish I could borrow one of the new iMacs for a day to try out in my living room... just to see if I could cope with the glare. I'm guessing I'd have to keep my curtains closed, but I wouldn't want to do that since I love having some natural light in the room.

Are glossy screen lovers sunlight hating vampires? :p:D

Yes, they did complain... and then they bought one of these:

You're actually the only person on any forum claiming there is no glare if the computer is on. It's another story if the glare bothers you or not of course.

What bothers me: Apple releases a new iMac with a "feature" which makes the computer less suited than the previous model for Lightroom/Aperture/etc. and People argue this is actually no big deal as you can buy a second display or a MacPro. Just acknowledge that the current iMac is no longer ideal for that kind of work - the previous one was actually a near perfect machine for that (without second display or twice as much $$ for a MacPro).

I thought it was going to be a problem was very hesitant at first. Got it home and have no regrets. Glare seems to be minimal and has not affected me in any negative ways.

We bought the iMac 20" and the glossy screen is not an issue; in fact, I think it is a stroke of genius. When the computer is off, the screen acts as a mirror and enhances the room, just like a regular mirror. The computer thus fits in as a nice piece of furniture rather than an ugly box. I haven't noticed any glare or issues when in use in our small office; there is a ceiling light fixture behind me and a window to one side. Colors seem bright; for our simple needs of e-mail, web surfing, word processing, etc., it's great.

I bought my 20" IMac on Tuesday as the announcement was being made. I love the screen! The colors are so clear and vibrant! My Mac is in my bedroom and there is not a lot of light in there. Last night I popped a DVD into the drive and watched a fun action movie. The movie was clearer and looked much better than had I played it on my TV.

Some people will complain about every little thing. Had they used a matted screen people would be complaining, probably the same people. That's the beauty of choice, if you don't like it...don't buy it. Personally, it's the nicest computer I've ever owned!

this doesn't help anyone ... BUT i just checked and my 24 inch iMac was delivered so i'm just waiting for the day to rap up and i will be able to give a review of it within a few hours.

cheers

The complaints about the glossy display are pure drama. The LCD transmits more than enough light to cancel any glare. I adjusted to it in about five seconds.

This is a useless comment.

Many, many people at all levels of computing have issues with glossy screens, from regular joes like me to design people who cannot work on a glossy screen. Personal preference or professional liability, it doesn't matter. They DO reflect more, it's a fact; some people are bothered by it, some people are not. Personally I will pass on the new iMac for this reason alone, because at certain times of the day the reflections in my very sunny house are too much (I know because I previously owned a quality LCD monitor with a shiny glass cover) and I cannot use my computer properly. This really is something to consider before buying: experiment, and keep your receipts if you do buy one, cuz there's a small but notable chance it might not work out.

As an afterthought, it's an awfully big factor for Apple to thrust upon its customers...I'm looking forward to the aftermarket 'hacks' that will inevitably make the matte-iMac an option for those willing to void their warranties:).

I think that all companies will never be able to please everyone. I'm sure Apple did market research and felt like they were appealing to the majority of the people, otherwise why would they incorporate something that would limit their sales... I can see your point why glossy will not work out for some, but I think most people will be happy with the glossy screen. I love mine...it's the first glossy screen I've owned.

Sorry but I don't see why just because someone doesn't have a problem with the glossy display (like myself) this becomes a useless comment! The title of this thread is "iMac glossy display reviews wanted" after all. This poster's opinion is that the whole glossy screen debate is pure drama and they are entitled to that opinion whether you agree with it or not!

For what it's worth I expected to dislike the glossy display but found myself liking it a lot when I saw it in person.

Fair enough...I should've been more specific. It is specifically useless to suggest that the debate is 'pure drama,' and that people who don't like the glossy screen are just whining for the hell of it; as you correctly point out, the thread is here to offer opinions on the product, not disregard the opinions of the people who don't like it.

That's all I meant.

I stand by what I said. To me, the debate is pure drama. There have been countless discussions on this topic since the dawn of glossy notebook displays and the results are always the same: Some people prefer glossy. Some people prefer matte. Some people couldn't care less. Bringing the subject up time and again will not change that no matter how strong the arguments may be.

Also, it wasn't my intent to disregard the opinion of those who don't like glossy displays. I understand the potential for unwanted glare is a legitimate concern for some. I just don't want to see the forum carpet bombed with endless threads about what is ultimately a subjective issue.

Peace.

Well I take my hat off to you for accepting my criticism of your post. It is very rare in my experience of using forums for someone to show such understanding. Well done you! :)

I agree that it is a generalisation to say that the glossy issue is pure drama because I have no doubt that there are some people out there who are genuinely unable to prevent their eyes from focussing on everything which enters their field of view. We are all unique after all. :)

What upsets me is when some people express such strong opinions that it colours the opinions of others who are perhaps less confident with technology and are looking for guidance from those "in the know". I would much prefer that anyone who is concerned about glossy screens just go and see one in the flesh and decide for themself. It is clearly a very personal preference upon which consensus will never be reached.

This entire thread could be summarised by a poll of opinions for and against glossy screens and a message to go decide for yourself. All in my humble opinion of course... ;)

Thanks again,
Craig.

Just poor design.

They just blew it with this Mac. No magnet for the remote, no sleep light and that ridiculous glossy display. The could have done a much better job. Offer a matte screen version, a magnet for the remote and have it match the Mac along with a matching mouse. Buy a white one before their gone.

OMG feel the LOVE!!!! :)

You're both right: it's pointless to argue about this in a forum...

I don't see how does that make it a right move?
Why don't Apple ditch OS X completely so that MORE people would be pleased to use Vista/XP on a nice looking box?

It makes it the right move because Apple is a "for profit business". You can never make everyone happy, and if the glossy screen is what most people like, then it makes sense for them to take this direction.

I have the new IMac, and I love it!

Because they don't need to! You can already run XP/Vista on a nice looking Apple box if you want to via boot camp, parallels and VMWare Fusion. I for one bought my first iMac less than a week ago BECAUSE it has OS X. On this machine I have the choice to run OS X, XP, Vista or Linux (amongst others) - I can't get this much choice anywhere else and I haven't felt this smug in ages! :p
