Worry Not ... You got a smokin iMac!

Hey guys,

I'm pretty sure all of you know alot better then I do about the possible upgrades coming for the Imacs. I heard that they would be happening within the next few weeks but I just bought a new fully decked out imac (best option) yesterday and was wondering if I should just wait it out or will these new macs only have small upgrades to them, like slimmer sizes and a few power boosts?

Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you.

All our decisions are half chance someone said. I wouldn't sweat it. True that New iMacs may be a week or a month, but it may also be SIX months away still. I'm personally prepared to wait the duration, but buyer's remorse isn't called for. After all, you have one heck of a computer no matter what Apple comes out with next.

You could send it back and buy a refurbished iMac. You'll save about 15% and people say they are as good as new.

For me, the iMac that is in the mail and supposed to hit my door today or tomorrow is going to be cheaper than a refurb in the end. This complicates my decision immensely. I got a new iMac 24" from Apple for $1399 plus an extra $100 credit due to a problem I had with the slow shipping of the machine vs when they said it'll ship. So, I get a new iMac for $1299, the same price as a refurb, but the wireless mouse and keyboard are $50 total, instead of $59 and $69 separately for the refurb wireless equipment. I'm ahead buy a little bit of money.

And, my needs are that the "old" (that's funny calling this powerhorse of a machine compared to what I have now, old) iMac (current model) are MORE than enough for what I currently would be using it for.

I'm really twisted as to what to do. I'm going to leave it up to serendipity but I'm tempted to not accept shipment of the machine when it comes this week and wait it on out for a newer machine with some new features or speed. It's greedy in a way, what I'm doing.

Apple's cool with it. They said it's fine if I cancel the shipment and don't accept it at the door. I was happy to hear that.

Or, I could accept the shipment, sit on it for 12 days and see if Apple comes out with something new. According to some of you, a new iMac may not come for 6 months or so. I was hoping to get something before that but my life will not end as I know if I'm still stuck with my slow Dell in 4-6 months I guess. I could sent it back at that point but it would be a much bigger hassle than just not accepting the shipment to begin with. The only thing I lose is my $100 good faith credit for the machine taking forever to ship that they credited to my credit card this week. That was really nice of them. I'm sure they'll charge me back for that $100 when I cancel acceptance of the machine and the next iMac I buy, the new one won't have that $100 credit.

Then again, the new iMac might be less money to begin with but I'm not counting on that. In the back of my mind, I'm hoping I'm doing the right thing by buying an iMac. Sometimes I wonder if I'd be happier for $500 more with a refurb 13" Mac Book Pro AND a 24" Apple Cinema Display. The refurb 13" is $999 for the new one, and the 24" display is $599. That's $200 more than a new $1399 iMac with the educational discount. But, the Apple Care is $239 instead of $119 I think so that's another $120 extra for the 2 pieces. And, the computer speed won't be as fast I guess using the 13" Mac Book Pro. And, I'm sure I would have been happier with a 15" in the end, but that's $1450 refurb. Then the price differential $650 which I can't swing right now. Then, I'm back to the 13"... to fit better in my budget. I've never had a laptop so I don't know if I'd enjoy it a lot or not, away from my house or desk. I have no need for one right now and my new job that I hope I get will give me a new Dell laptop for work anyway.

Ok, I'm back on an iMac. Oh vey... I'm dizzy.)

i maybe a little late but i did the same thing, I purchased a blackbook ONE MONTH before the unibodies came out and instantly regretted it, but then again I like the cosmetics on my macbook, and since I don't use my blackbook for gaming it's not much of a concern for me

You know what's gonna happen? Before the end of the year, Apple might update the iMac and once that's updated, there's probably gonna be updates in MacBooks/Pro's and then revised MacPro's. Dude, if your really worried about updates, you'll be waiting till you're grey!! Think about it... :D

why did you buy the mac in first place ?
because of its design?
i promise you the next one will not be a design revolution it will still have a simple lcd display and no plasma screen:D
because of the speed of the processor ?
i also can promise you here the next one will not double the speed
as intel has nothing to offer that would be faster and still fit in a nice sleek screen unless the next imac would be watercooled :D or gets a hunchback :D
so you`ve bought a mac which makes most of us jealous ,as some cant afford it :)
ok others dont want it because they like old designs more then speed :D

So my iMac came this morning. Let the waiting game begin. Im holding onto it for 2 weeks to see how these upgrades pan out or even happen. Wish me luck.

March 2008: I'm in the market for a Mac mini. I'm advised to wait because Appleinsider had just posted an article stating the a "source" claimed new Mac mini's were just around the corner. Everyone on the forum advised that I wait.

May 2008: After weeks of waiting, I break down and buy one. I love it. I'm using it every day, it was my switch to the Mac, I couldn't be happier. I didn't care if a new machine was coming out. The Mac did everything I wanted and more. I loved it.

March 2009: A full year after originally rumoured, the Mac mini finally gets updated.

I understand that, but the Mini not being updated for a year and a half or whatever it was, was ridiculous and not the norm. There is a lot of evidence supporting an iMac and Mac Mini refresh in the very near future. Of course, this same amount of evidence was present before Macworld this year, and the iMac and Mini didn't see an update until March.

I returned the imac i ordered 2 weeks ago today and put in the new order this morning for a 27" 2.8 Quad Core i7, 8 GB ram and 1TB drive. I saved around $700 and on top of it all after telling apple my situation they gave me a free return shipping label and free rush shipping for the new system that should arrive early November. So im happy I didnt open it lol.

Congratulations! I'm so glad to hear that you didn't cave in. Imagine how frustrated you would have been with yourself. Today's upgrade is truly phenomenal, and from the looks of it, you are getting a machine to match! I suppose good things really do come to those who wait. Enjoy the beast of a machine you ordered! Be sure to benchmark that puppy when it comes in the mail :apple:
