Good point, I probably had messenger/outlook open, but yes, I did give that number a second look. Good insight on another motivation for Apple to move to their newer, more novel architecture.

On a positive note, gaming is not even close in feel.

Am I the only nano screen purchaser on this thread? I am blown away. I have both computers in front of me (iMac 2014 and iMac 2020 w/ nano screen), and the difference is striking. True Tone might help a bit, too.

I didn't think the extra $500 was worth it for that. I spent it on a larger SSD. I've had a Thunderbolt display for years, and I don't have glare problems in my office. To each their own.

My 8/6 order just changed to preparing to ship, in the last hour.

10 core i9, 5700xt, 4TB, 8gb ram, 10gb, keyboard w/ num

Update: my iMac just showed up, unboxing now. Original target from Apple was 8/21-28. When it shipped last Thursday, Apple updated the order to arrive 8/31. The iMac was stuck in Louisville for 3 days waiting on customs clearance and finally started moving yesterday.

Don't lose hope. Mine made it from Shanghai to Korea to Anchorage to Louisville to Oakland, California in 28 hours total
You were right! It cleared customs this morning and UPS has put up a delivery date of tomorrow. Less than two weeks for a custom order in the midst of the initial order rush. Not bad!

I placed my initial order on Aug 9. 8 core i7, 8gigs ram (ordered 32 crucial), 5500XT GPU, 4TB SS and extended keyboard w/ trackpad.

The next day I called to change the GPU to the 5700. I was told to allow as much as 14 days for the change to be reflected on the website.

As of this morning, seventeen days later, the change still has not not shown up and the order was STILL stuck on "processing", so I initiated a chat. After a back and fourth I asked the agent what GPU she saw listed on the order. She told me that she saw the 5500XT (wrong answer!). She added, "Since you said the specifications you asked for are still not appearing in the online order status page, what I can advise you to do is cancel and reorder this item with the correct specifications so it will process smoothly by this time".

After politely expressing my significant displeasure, that's what I did.

This sucks SO BAD...

Oh man, I can imagine calling to change an order would throw a big wrench into scheduling. They don't seem flexible in that regard. I'm sure it'll be worth it in the long run.

Hi sir grotius! I made an account just to ask how you like the nano texture glass? I have both ordered and I was going to return the one I liked least. I really want the nano though! I love the look of glass, but even minor reflections bother me.

I stare at my screen like 10 hours a day - I also currently use a 1080p matte monitor - so the bar is set pretty low!

Haha, I love it. I may be somewhat predisposed to like it, however, because:
  • I was searching for something different on the exterior!
  • I have sensitive eyes, always use eye drops, etc, people in my family even wear those progressive lenses, but I can't stomach the idea
Anyway, no matte look whatsoever. Perfectly clear, zero reflection, or glare.

As others have said, it is a significant price $500, so not everyone would be as interested in this option, but for me, is a big upgrade.

That's good to hear! I think I'm sold on the look - some people even described it as similar to e-ink...would you say the same?

I also have very sensitive eyes...I love the sharp glass look on my iPhone, iPad, etc. but on my main driver (desktop) I would prefer something that wasn't so reflective. I usually have my monitor on very low brightness, and that combined with the reflective glass surface (and my computer being in dark mode) makes a non-reflective surface a must.

Now it's just a question of quality control and whether it will hold up as long as we need

Mine arrived today. Ordered August 14, shipped from Shanghai, arrived in Winnipeg August 24 and lost a day because of the delivery address change, and delivered to me August 27. So 13 days, which is a lot better than the September 10-17 window I was initially given.

By happy coincidence, my second order of RAM from OWC also arrived today, so I'll have 4 sticks of new RAM to plunk in for a total of 32 GB.

What a difference an order makes. The resubmitted order on Aug 22nd went all the way from processing to shipped overnight. My order status page says it’s scheduled to arrive Sep 2nd, Fedex shows it’s departed China and is estimating arrival on Aug 31st by 10:30am.
Quite the turnaround. The iMac actually arrived today, days ahead of ETAs from Apple and Fedex and only 3 days later than the original promised arrival date of the borked order I needed to cancel. It was so quick I haven't had a chance to order extra memory yet and properly back up my 2012 iMac before moving essentials over to the new one. So I need to delay gratification for a little bit so I can have things properly lined up before I can savor the unboxing. Not as upset with Apple any more today. But I still think their specialists leave a lot to be desired.

UPS keeps changing delivery date, it was today, then tomorrow, then Wednesday, then Monday and now it is saying tomorrow. It cleared customs in Alaska and arrived in Louisville today and is showing as on its way since this afternoon. Less than 2 weeks from custom order to delivery, in pretty happy with that.

I called Expercom this afternoon to see if it was still possible to make changes to my order--I was thinking about upgrading to the 10-core--and they told me my iMac has left the factory in China and should be in the US by Monday ?

I'm 95% sure I'll stick with the 8-core now, but they told me I could return and exchange if I decide I want a different configuration.

This is my 4th order from Expercom since 2019 and all my experiences have been positive. It's really easy to get ahold of someone by phone if you have questions or need assistance with an order.

Why do you want to upgrade to the i9?

Yeah, the i9 is about 10% faster in benchmarks compared to i7, and probably less than 10% faster in real use. This seems not worth changing an order. In a couple of years time this i9 will have been leapfrogged anyway and not that special.
Now the GPU is a different story! The 5700XT is way faster than the 5500XT. This might indeed be worth changing an order. (OTOH, people are getting glitches with the 5700XT, and hoping it is just a software issue.)

Mine was “Loaded on Delivery Vehicle” at 5am and “Out For Delivery Today” at 9:30am. The delivery details and delivery window just says “Before 9pm”.

I have several virtual meetings this afternoon. It is going to be disruptive if it shows up in the middle of one! Wish the UPS here did the tracking thing where you can track the truck your package is on like someone else linked earlier in the thread!

After a few weeks of thinking, and seeing what I could sell my Late-2015 iMac for, I have come to join the ranks.

Ordered a BTO model shortly after 9am yesterday (2020-08-27). Delivery will be to southern-Ontario, Canada. Initial delivery estimate (via standard shipping) is Wednesday September 16th through Wednesday September 23rd.

It got here yesterday! At almost 7pm, so they really made me wait for it. Poor UPS guy had a long day, too.

Popped the new RAM in before I even powered it up and off to the races. I have pretty much all my day to day stuff running. Still need to do a few installs: Steam, Adobe CC stuff, Blizzard games.

I like the touchpad a lot. It is intuitive and much better than the mouse. Plus you can use and charge it at the same time if needed. Still thinking about the keyboard. Integration with my phone for calendar and stuff is nice. I've heard a hint of the fan a couple of times, but mostly it is pretty quiet. And for reference, my work laptop with its screen off and idle makes more fan noise than I've heard out of the iMac.

Ordered mine on the 15th and after originally being given a delivery window of 9/9-16, it arrived on the 28th. 13 days is not too shabby in my book.

Does anyone know the best way to lift an iMac from one area to the next? I have grabbed it by the screen but then the stand thing kind of moves around. Any suggestions?

Another thread from back in the day suggested screen towards your body, right hand on the bottom right of the screen, and left hand grasping the upper left part of the screen/chasis.

I know this is kind of too detailed but I'm anxious about damaging or loosening the back hinge of the computer, as it seems you can't really adjust the tension of the screen tilt. Thanks in advance!

I moved my 27-inch several times recently, I found holding it side ways to be pretty secure. So, put one thin edge of the iMac at your chest, hold the stand through the ring with one hand, hold the bottom edge of iMac with the other hand (around the Apple logo). The iMac sticks way out in front of you, be careful, but the whole unit is solid.

If it’s going a big distance I’d put it in the box, use the handle.

I ordered the mid 27" model with the base ram as I know its upgradeable still (but I've never messed about with installing anything on my own)

I'm trying to figure out if they are using the same ram as last years model so I can try and look around what kind to buy, thanks for any info/help guys.

Buy from a reputable source like Crucial or OWC and use their RAM finder to get the right RAM. You select your model on their site and then they show you available kits that are suitable.

No, I maxed out everything on mine but the RAM, received it a couple of weeks back. It's still next to my day-1 2014 Retina, and the difference is incredible and I'll only be getting nano screens from now on. Next to the huge increase in SSD size and speed, that's the biggest difference for me. Almost ready to clear off the old one and sell it to the ex :)

Got my 27'' a couple of days ago, i7 512GB w/5500XT. Instantly upgraded to 32GB of RAM. Couldn't be happier, it's dead quiet too, even under load. I played a bit of Doom under Boot Camp and I expected much worse noise and thermal performance from this machine. It's a beast. Having never owned an iMac (I used to have an MBP on a Dock attached to a Dell Ultrasharp 2K monitor), the 5K display is a revelation.
