Why do you care if anyone thinks you have a PC or not? It's a freaking COMPUTER. If the actual performance of the monitors is different, if one is superior to the other, then you have a reason. Just buying the apple product because you're concerned everyone might not realize you have an apple hooked up to it is silly.

yeah its a freaking computer , but I love the quality of Apple Displays . They look sooo amazing

I bought an iMac 3.06 and MacBook 2.0. It cost the same as what the MacBook Pro 2.8 and 24" LED would have cost. I have a faster desktop and lighter portable. I'm happy with the duo, though I do like the LED screen better. Of course once the new iMacs comes out it will have the LED too.

What I find interesting , is having an "all-in-one" . Laptop and desktop at your choice . That is the point.

If its real and as people says the 2.8 MBP is so similar spec wise to the iMac 3.06 , why buy them both when I can have everything on just a computer ?

yeah its a freaking computer , but yeah i want the LCD screen :DD

I think you mean LED, to be honest your thread is quite tedious to read.

People have given you opinions all with valid options all you seemed concerned with is how cool you will look with them and how your first pc was a gizzilion squid. It is clear from what you said that the MBP + LED Screen is the way you wanna go! So go and enjoy it, as to be honest your probably not going to stretch the MBP's ability anyway.

Good luck with your purchase.

The suggestion wasn't for you to not buy an LCD screen. The suggestion was for you to buy one that said DELL on the front instead of :apple: - you balked because you were afraid people might not know you have an apple.

Several posters have suggested that you buy a MacBook (NOT/NOT a MacBook PRO) and the iMac not both the MBP and the iMac.

Well I am not saying I am decided . Been waiting 3 months for the updated iMac , so in fact I wanted the iMac . I have always been using desktops , and moreover , DELL Desktops .

As I said , Im not going Mac Pro 4000euro because i DONT NEED IT . I am NOT going to use its power . So im not throwing my money on a thing I wont use .

So you guys say cheap MB + Top iMac . Does the graphics card in the MB 2.0 run great ? Also the lap i use is 2.0 and its 1y ago . Doesnt seem a bit outdated ?

on the other side ... theres the MB Air . I touched it at the apple store and it is very very easy to move around and its 1.86ghz , enough to take to school and weights just like a netbook !

However it wouldnt replace the desktop and it costs 2500 euro . Seems expensive .

@the last poster . Yes i meant LED .

I actually tried the MBP plus 24" LED combo and had trouble with the screen. You can search for my past posts to read more about it. It was a problem with the screen shifting colors after a few hours of use. I don't know if it is a 100% issue with all of the 24" LEDs, but I exchanged mine and the new one had the same issue. (I also exchanged my MBP and it still happened.)

If you aren't going to be gaming I think the MBP 2.8, or even 2.53 for that matter, would be a great system for you. The difference between it and the iMac would really be negligible. The 8800GS is better than the 9600M GT, but it really wouldn't be noticeable. I do prefer the LED screen, plus I think it looks prettier than the iMac with its chin. If I hadn't had the problem with my LED I would have kept it. But now that I have the iMac 3.06 I'm glad I made the trade because I get much better FPS in WoW at high settings. I also feel a little safer leaving home with my MacBook and still having a desktop at home. If my MacBook is stolen I'll still have a computer to use.

So for the 100th time it comes down to portability, if you want to take it places get a laptop and monitor and there you have a mobile desktop replacement that will last years if you treat it right.

The macbook if you read the specs! Has an integrated graphics card not a dedicated one like the MBP or imac. An your right you don't need the power of a mac pro, but then you probably don't need the power of a MBP or top end imac! Either one will do everything you want perfectly without breaking a sweat!

Yes , I know it has a 9600M . How do you compare it to the 8800 on the iMac . Is the 8800 so superior ? Just a bit ?

If you can please give me some benchmarks where I can see the difference between the card on the MBP and the card on the iMac ?

Just want to be sure the :apple: MBP will fulfill all what I will need during the 3 years I have left to go on computer engineering .

Also , can someone explain me how you decide to use the 9400M or the 9600M on the MBP ? Is it easy ?

What you will do with your computer? MB's GPU has much power for normal use and for normal photo editing

Agreed. However, you gotta admit, a considerable people buy a mac because it's now considered a "status" symbol

nah , just saying that when poeple see the monitor they think you have a PC lolz . And also I am bored of Dells , there are already 1000 Dells at the university !

So right now , computers are cheap :) And .. im not getting the apple mac pro as I am not a hardcore gamer as I was , I want it basically for doing work

So you guys please tell me if theres so much difference between those 2 setups .

PS : My current computer is Pentium D 3.2 Ghz , 7800 GTX Nvidia , 4GB GeIL Ram..

i'll go with the Macbook pro. For a uni student I think the portability is a big plus. Especially if you and your buddies or the "one" hot girl in engineering wants to do a late night study session at the library, you can take it with you :D

But that is my point a MB only has a 9400m. Not a 9600m. Have a look for bearfeats I believe that has all the benchmarks for all the Mac range that will probably have a lot of helpful info.

For a while the 20" Apple Cinema Display and the equivalent Dell display (model 2007WFP) used the same exact LCD panel. The 20" Dells also had three more ports (composite, VGA, S-video in addition to DVI), was far more adjustable, and cost about half as much. The Apple display had a slightly better backlight.

I don't think Dell makes the 2007WFP anymore, but my point is there are only a few manufacturers of the actual LCD part of any LCD display. Apple uses the same parts as everyone else.

Hello ,

If it worked like that , I would probably return my ACD and get a Dell Monitor and Displayport-to-DVI adapter . Not that I like the option but if I can't get the ACD to work I think its what I would do .

Also , is there any way you can run both the 9600M GT and the 9400M is SLI mode ? Not that I would be using it everyday , but can come in handy if I someday want to play some games on it.

About the stealing part .. well .. I wont take my MBP to my secondary school beceuse there it would be broken in half a day . However at the uni there is just 15 guys and they don't run and throw things in class :DD . Even though its still 2000euro you get stolen .

Go with the MBP and 24" ACD.

I think the unibody MBPs are amazing. And, with that amazing new LED 24" ACD, it is an INSTANT "desktop." You get so much more versatility by going with the MBP and ACD. Portable and powerful desktop all in one!

If you were going to get an iMac, I would strongly suggest waiting at least a month before purchasing. Nearly everyone is predicting an update really soon. And the new iMac will probably have a quad core CPU and maybe some other great features. I would still advise the MBP, what an amazing MAC!

Congrats on your new Mac whichever route you go.

1) Look at the link in my post earlier, it has a comparison between the MBP and iMac.

2) The 8800GS (actually an 8800M GTS) is far superior, compared to the 9600M GT. Just imagine this, the 9600 is the top card in the middle range Nvidia GPUs, whereas the 8800 is the middle card in the top range Nvidia GPUs.

3) Most of my friends with the MBP use the 9400 whenever they're on battery and using their MBPs for emailing, lecture recording etc...but when they get home they would use the 9600 (plugged in) for GPU intensive tasks such as gaming and CS4.

That seems fair , and you can always switch to 9600M in class if you need to do some 3D graphics stuff .

Also , does closing the lid and working on the ACD overheat the MBP ? Does it still pick up wireless networks as well as with lid open ?

It will be a bit warmer, although I am not 100% sure - anyway you can always turn the fan speed up.

Your MBP will operate the same regardless of its lid closed or open. Just imagine that your MBP's screen is "transferred" to the ACD.

What I suggest you do is find members here who have that set up, just go to the pictures gallery and find them in the "post your mac set up" thread - they are the ones with the more resourceful information.

When I had the MBP I had no trouble with wireless with the screen closed. I have the Airport and use 802.11n. As far as heat, the fans kicked on in the MBP any time I did anything that would cause it to heat up, and I checked the bottom of it several times and it never felt hot, unlike my past PowerBooks which would get very hot.

Well .. as long as it doesn't kill the 2300$ gadget and doesn't burn my lap I am fine :D

Of course, the new 17" MBP would be even closer to the top iMac specs-wise, as it has a glorious 1920-rez screen, and can go all the way to 2.93 GHz and 8GB Ram (although the latter definitely come at prrreccciousss Apple prices).

I'm seriously tempted to sell my barely 4 weeks old 15" MBP for this myself :p

I would be getting the 15" MBP , 2.8ghz . 17" Is a bit too big to be moving it from class to class every 2 hours , back to home , and fitting on my backpack .

15" is for me the best size for a nice portability , and 2.8ghz is not slow :D

Ok , its decided . I am going the MacBook Pro way . I will be ordering mine later this night . However I got told on the phone that it will take 10 working days to arrive .

Will post pics when its home :)
