From what I have read on this forum, Apple has a history of keeping the prices similar or the same but updating features such as higher cpu, hard drive, memory, etc.

This way they don't see declining prices that often happens to computers running Windows (Dell, HP...).

Right, and usually if they want to raise the price they add on a new model above the current offerings.

Another Tuesday/Wednesday passes and no imacs. Maybe we really won't see anything until WWDC., or maybe IT'S NEXT TUESDAY!!!!

I predict that iMac revisions will come out x days after the last revision, with x being +/- soon number of days from now. That of course only given that now is a stable constant varaible in which now + 1 = soon, though soon = now as now approaches soon.

Then again, the square root of the difference between this update cycle and the previous cycle carried to the degree of n, where n = the number of black mock turtlenecks in Steve's closet becomes the likelihood factor on any given tuesday, unless the number in the closet is less than the number in the laundry, at which point the likelihood factor drops to zero.

Seriously what's with this Tuesday/Wednesday thing? Is Tuesday Steve's lucky day, and if so why is he switching to Wednesdays? Is Apple diverting employees from OS X to make astrological charts? Or could they be counting down to the apocalypse? Does the week really end on Saturday or Sunday?

i would think thursday-sunday would be no good, because nobody wants to read/cover the news on the weeekend. to maximize exposure, these things should take place earlier in the week. my guess as to why it isn't monday is that nobody wants to actually do work on monday. i duno, shooting in the dark here.

They can overnight to the stores on Monday for Tuesday arrival and have the product announcement and availability on Tuesday. Just like album releases, though because they know those are coming they usually arrive on a Monday so stores can put them out that night and be ready for sales in the morning.

to me, the iMac, when Apple bring out a new one, is the most exciting product. Don't get me wrong all of what Apple bring out is exciting, but the iMac holds the crown for me...

I can't wait to see what comes next....

Me too

I hope they release one soon. I would like to get a desktop computer. Haven't owned one yet. I am really starting to enjoy all the cool stuff apple has to offer.

i concur. i think that the imac is a great system that hints at the direction of apple's future. the progression from original imacs to sunflowers to the current design is a beautiful timeline of design innovation. the next step hopefully keeps this tradition going, ushering in new themes of style with great consumer level technology.

i just hope they do it sooner (aka next tuesday) than later.

Video Card and RAM

The iMacs, more than anything (well, the mini's too) are in a desparate need of an upgrade. The iMacs are desktops that use laptop components, so they take an enormous hit right there.

First, the graphics card x1600 is 2 years old, and a laptop graphics card. it's fine for a laptop, even though so many people are demanding new mac book pros. but the iMac is a 'desktop', and in that line the card is way, way overdue for a change.

Second, the RAM. How can you buy a desktop the maxes out at 3 gb of RAM (well, for all pratical purposes, it's really 2 gb)? Any new computer desktop sold should come with a bare minimum (not near maximum) of 2 gb with upgrade ability to at least 4 gb, but hopefully 8.

Well, with the new Santa Rosa platform (a laptop setup that i am sure will be used in the desktop iMac) and the release of new Nvidia mobile graphics cards, hopefully this will be addressed.

Of course you could always shell out $2.5k for a mac pro!! (which is reasonable if you need a workstation, but seriously, let's update the other stuff)

I'm just hoping the video card is upgraded along with the price of the RAM. I don't care about the amount because 2 GB is fine and will be for a while to come. The prices will probably stay the same for the base models, but I'm hoping that the base models have a bit more to offer.

I'm hoping the new iMacs (maybe just the 24 inch) get the new mobile 8600. Then I could play Crysis.

RAM speeds too slow for SR?

Anyone hear about 800mHz RAM being unavailable? I was reading a crave.cnet.com article suggesting that Santa Rosa won't live up to its full potential until faster ram is available. I then looked for 800mHz RAM and had no problem finding some. Is it a SO-DIMM issue or what? I don't get it.

I've been waiting for a new iMac to replace my aging G4 iMac for months. Because my G4 stills pulls its own weight, I've decided to wait until a dramatically new iMac is available. Core 2 is great, but I was under the impression that SR was required to make the most of the processor. If slow RAM will hold back the machine, I'll be pretty miffed!

Intel decided not to implement DDR2-800 support in the Santa Rosa mobile platform because the performance gain would have been very small. Increasing speed while also increasing CAS Latency (CL) doesn't allow for great performance gains. DDR3 is the future (but don't plan on it becoming an affordable "standard" anytime in 2007, however.)

Inside the next imac, I would expect a gradual upgrade - 2 GB Ram, 350 GB HD (I am hoping for 500 GB), next step up in video card, and slightly faster processor. My guess would be a similar price point.

The one thing that scares me is the rumor of a new physical design. I think this may mean a longer time before the next imac upgrade. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/289059/

Of course, they could just keep the same physical form and upgrade the internals. Either way, I do hope they release one soon. I have been waiting for an upgraded imac since around last winter. I keep computers a long time, so I have been playing the waiting game.

Why wouldn't you want a redesign?

They have had 3 years to redesign the case. I would expect at least a 4GB RAM ceiling (2GB stock) and a minimum 250GB HD. Add on an HD2600 video card and I'll take 2!

I am starting to think the redesign is next and not a minor update. I would hope for a price drop overall, along with the expected internal bump. I would like to get a 24" imac but the curent price is to high for me. I may just wait and get the last version after the price drop, unless of course I get dazzled with the new fantastic.

Do you expect to be wowed or just a minor bump?

Not much in the technology front to be wow'd about. Minor speed/spec bump. They already do 802.11n and FW800. A better video card would be a must, but again thay are limited to the new portable cards that are coming out on Tuesday. I am looking to get 2 20" ones after summer, so I certainly hope a price drop is part of the package.
