Since iMacs are not portable the battery saving benefits would not be as relevant to iMacs. Also, LED screens will have to get to be 24" before they could cover the iMac line. However, I do agree that we will see a new iMac being the first Mac to use the Santa-Rosa chipset which came out yesterday right?

But it reduces the power consumption which makes it a greener computer. Less power consumed also means less heat and a smaller PS can also be used. LED’s could also make the display thinner, which in turn would allow Apple to make the iMac even slimmer.

 NOT FAST ENOUGH! WHY NOT TOMORROW! :(

I have been impatient since August of last yr! I waited till I could justify a new computer, then come up with the extra money and JUST AS I WAS ABOUT TO BUY, I FOUND THIS SITE AND THEN THE BUYERS GUIDE! DAMN YOU GUYS!

(P.S. When I get an updated iMac, I already thank it to this site!!! Damn Days Since Update 245 (Avg = 168)):D :D :D :D :D :D

You should have purchased t the last update. August was roughly 270 days ago, the last update was 248 days ago which was September 2006.
They have had 3 years to redesign the case. I would expect at least a 4GB RAM ceiling (2GB stock) and a minimum 250GB HD. Add on an HD2600 video card and I'll take 2!

The Mac Pro doesn’t even come with 2GB stock.

Why wouldn't you want a redesign?

I would love a redesign.:)

I would have to have to wait months for it.

I know I should of just bought my imac months ago, but I wanted to get in just after a revision to lengthen the useful life. I tend to keep these things for a long time.

Ram?

Had to be away for a year so using a MBP now. Sold my old G4 before we left and planning on an iMac in July. Think this new Santa Rosa chip set might mean full use of 4 gigs RAM?? Do a lot of large image files and that is something I worry about. MBP is 2.0 (original model) and can really bog down on the larger ones using Photoshop filters.

If there were a redesign they could have been working on it since the current model came out years ago or even before. Who knows, they could have a few designs laying around, waiting for the planets to align, to release.

At that time I wasn't sure about going the way of the Mac and then i actually went and looked at them instore and loved them. Then i had to set aside funds from roughly august on. It was about February i was ready on buying one then was just procrastinating on spending that kind of money. My girlfriend got a new computer which we are both sharing right now with Vista on it which I HATE WITH A PASSION.(<--- IE won't open anymore for some wierd reason and the only response i get to fixing this problem is "Reformat your computer")

When apple does update things, does it just pop up on the site or do they give some kind of forewarning?

Agreed! I would feel much better knowing i waited then to be impatient and bought something because i couldn't wait an extra month or two.

Apple updates are far better then windows. There is a program that you can setup to run lets say once a week. Once a week it will pop up and show you the available updates. Updates don't happen a lot, but they do show you what program its for, what it does, how big it is, whether you will have to restart and give you all the information you need. You can then decide which ones to install and let it do its thing. Its not like windows where you will get some update called K23f9lkn9d that you are supposed to install or you don't even know what it installs. I've never had a problem or been surprised after a software update on a mac.

hey team,

i work for a reseller here in australia, and although i hear nothing from apple ahead of everyone else, there has been some interesting goings on over here.

at the update of the macbooks, apple has done a few things over here
-dropped the prices of the macbooks by about AUD$200 across the board
-dropped the prices of ipods by AUD$10 - AUD$30 depending on which model you're looking at
-offered a AUD$500 rebate when anyone buys a mac pro and cinema display
-offered a free 2gb (or AUD$199 discount) with every imac

also, we have not had any new stock on macbooks, macbook pros, imacs, and cinema displays for almost 2 weeks. we've only been able to sell what we've had in stock. apple normally fulfil our orders for items we don't have in stock in 2-3 (occasionally up to 5) days, and it's nearly been twice that with no word.

we are now sold out of imacs and have only 2 mid-range macbook pros in stock. we've got 1 x 23inch cinema display left. we're expecting the new macbooks tomorrow.

the rebate/free ipod offer ends on the 9th of june. (which is a saturday, 2 days before wwdc)

this **suggests** (see that word? that means this here is a rumor, not concrete fact) to me that apple will be releasing new macbook pros, imacs and cinema displays at wwdc. i strongly suspect that at least the imacs, but quite possibly also the cinema displays will get a case redesign, possibly to keep similar form factor (as they both currently share similar feet)

dunno. just my thoughts on the current climate.

I would tend to agree with this assessment.

New iMacs at WWDC with SR chips, new case, more memory, updated graphics... Forward compatible to handle all the goodness of Leopard.

headhammer, i hope yr right! i've been holding out for an imac for waaaaay too long now.... do you work in a store like domayne/harvey norman or more of a nextbyte type store? just curious :)

also... wasn't there some kinda hype around the 10.4.9 update? talk that there is history with a small update coming just before the next big OS update... and isn't there now talk of 10.4.10? maybe i'm just hearing what i want to hear!

all i'm going to say is that i work at a store which has earned the premium reseller badge. infer what you will from that. i don't want jeopardise either myself, my co-workers, or my company by saying more. basically, anything i say on these boards is my personal opinion, and i don't want anything that i say to be construed as coming from my company (and i'm sure my company doesn't either). so i'll leave it there, and any assumptions you make from that point are yours to make.

the reason for the 10.4.10 update (given that we're now waiting until october ) is to sort out minor kinks in tiger to tide us over until then. i doubt we'll see anything huge in it like having to hold down eject keys to extract discs from drives, for example. i think it'll all be back end stuff, and total size less than about 70mb.

i guess we'll find out for sure soon enough though.

we got the new macbooks in store today, and they flew off the shelves. we sold more than half our stock in the first half hour that they were in the store
.
having today re-read the conditions that go with the two promos that apple have here (free ipod and reduced cinema displays) i'm almost certain that imacs will be re-released at wwdc. i think (at least in australia) that the price points will be reduced, too.

the one thing i'm hating about the current climate is that i can't say any of that to customers. my job is not to advise people not to buy things
(hence why i can't say where i work)

headhammer, thanks for the info.... it all sounds very good to me.

the reason I asked about the kinda store you work at is the deals you talked about... that 2gb discount sounded mighty fine! ... i'm likely to buy my imac from a place that offers interest free periods (eg DSE, Domayne) and it'd be great to get something like that thrown in for free... but a reduced price point will do :)
