Yeah, I think Imacs are getting the new meroms (mobile) instead of the conroe (thatll likely end up on the Mac Pro). Im going to wait because i think itll be out there by october. Im looking for a macbook, and not an imac, but i think theyll be out by the same time.

The difference is pretty significant, as meroms sport twice as much cache as the current core duo

The prices don't seem much different
2.0 Yonah $294
2.4 Conroe $316

There'd be no reason for Apple not to - $22 is peanuts in the overall price.
Does anyone know if the heat output difference between the two would be enough for Apple to redesign the iMac case in a slightly thinner form factor? Currently, I know the power source makes it pretty thick but if they stick with the laptop processors I think they might be able to shave off more depth around the outside...

Personally I would love to see them use a thinner transparent case like what was around the iMac G4 and get rid of the chin...I know the current iMacs were designed to imitate iPods but I think they would look better in a sleeker form factor...

Either way, I am buying the next update of the iMac but I would like to see the Merom over the Conroe if it means a new case design...

Conroe is cheaper than Merom at the equivalent clocks so Apple would be crazy not to put it in. Heat shouldn't be too much of a problem at all if the iMacs could handle G5s.

Merom - 35W
Conroe (Mac Pro?) - 65W
Woodcrest (Mac Pro?) - 80W
Dual-core G5s - 90W?

Woodcrest would be better in the Mac Pro because G5s are normally compared to Xeons anyway.

I have a G5 in my iMac, so the case can handle the heat ;)

new chip info...

The Inquirer said:
The chip wars are heating up with Intel planning the release of its Conroe processors for July 23. They'll be called Core 2 Duo and there will be five different versions. The Core 2 Duo processors for the mainstream market will be numbered 6300 and 6400 and will run at clock speeds of 1.86GHz and 2.13GHz. These two chips will have a 2MB cache and sell for $183 and $224, respectively.

The higher-end Conroes will have a 4MB cache, and will be numbered 6600 and 6700. They will run at 2.39GHz and 2.67GHz, and will cost $316 and $530. The senior member of the group will be the Core 2 Extreme, otherwise known as the 6800, which will have a 4MB cache and run at 2.93GHz. While the other four newcomers draw 65 watts, the Extreme needs 80 watts and will cost $999.

what does this mean for new Imacs? can the Imac case handle 65 watts?
i thought it would be much less.

Bluewater!? My local store! :)

I purchased an iMac Core Duo with this spec: 20"/2.0GB RAM/250GB HD/256MB X1600 in January via the online store.

It is most definitely the best computer I have ever used. I find the machine unbelievably fast especially at backing up my DVD collection a 2 hour film in 35 minutes. Web browsing is snappy and everything just works perfectly.

If you are a pro user then this will run anything, you could wait the rest of your life for the best computer.

Yeah, I've just bought a 2.0 GHZ Intel Core Duo 20" iMac today - Thats more than enough for me, I dont really use that many CPU Intensive programs, and if in doubt, I'll just purchase the Intel Core Duo 2 chip.

Not even a fig leaf? Well, it'll be in July or August so it should be warm at least. :D

At one point in time, Apple was using desktop processors in their iMacs. Does anyone have TDP numbers on the G5 versus Conroe (which I believe is 65 watts)?

I know the urge to switch can be strong, but I would recommend that you wait.

The new chips are much more efficient, and you will get the next revision of the imac line. (Which hopefully will fix some of the quality issues.)

I think you will be well served to wait and get the latest and greatest technology.

You may not want to switch it on while taking a bath tho.

Apple needs to put a desktop proccesor in their Desktop computers i.e. iMac.

It's a friggin desktop, it needs a desktop chip. The Mac Pro has always had the same chip as the Servers, and it will continue to be that way.

By the end of this year:

Mac Mini - Merom
MacBook - Merom
iMac - Conroe
MacBook Pro - Merom
Mac Pro - Woodcrest.

Here is the justification for each machine.

Mac Mini - They can't give it a 32 bit CPU. Yonah's will smell worse than my ass after I take a crap by the end of this year.

MacBook - Once again, they can't give it 32 bit. See above.

iMac - They can't give it the same CPU as the Mac Mini, because of the price difference. And it's a desktop, so it will get Conroe, which isn't much more expensive than the current Core Duo's.

MacBook Pro - This is the right chip for them. They will have faster clocked chips than the MacBook and Mac Mini. The other big difference will be GPU versus Integrated in the Mac Mini and MacBook.

Mac Pro - They have always had the same chips as the servers, and they can't put the Conroe in the Mac Pro because Conroe will be in Dell towers selling for much less than what the Mac Pro's will cost.

There, you can't argue with me can you?

Nop, i think your spot on with your theory!

It would be interesting to see if they bump the GPU in the iMac when the upgrade the CPU.

Yup, found it.

Merom - 35W
2.1GHz G5 (The one found in iMacs, 970FX) - <55W
Conroe (Mac Pro?) - 65W
Conroe XE (Mac Pro?) - 95W
Woodcrest (Mac Pro?) - 80W
Dual-core G5s (970MP) - <100W

Wow, so getting Conroe in there might be a bigger challenge than I originally thought.
