I also have the M2 13” MacBook Pro, such a fantastic machine in my opinion ! I really love the TouchBar, I think it’s a great feature and pretty useful sometimes ❤️

As long as Apple keeps the 13” MacBook Pro, the TouchBar is still there. Though I do have a feeling they may end up either discontinuing the 13” MacBook Pro or redesigning it because it just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense in the lineup.. it’d be sad for me to see the TouchBar completely gone though 🙁
Unfortunately (and I know this is not a widely popular opinion around these parts), Touch Bar was a grossly under-appreciated advancement in the static keyboard. It put the "fun" in "functional." Once TB became part of my workflow, which was almost instantly, it has felt archaic whenever I went back to static F keys.

I recently moved from a work-issued MacBook Pro (w/ Touch Bar) to a new 15" MBA (a gorgeous culmination of 30+ years of Apple R&D - such a well-built and capable laptop). And that top row of static F keys is just so sad. For all the whining about lack of ports with MBA, at least there are plenty of dongles to afford any and every type of port imaginable. There's no port that offers Touch Bar functionality. That said, it is too bad Apple reversed course on Touch Bar. Especially when opened up to developers, Touch Bar offered real promise.

"next gen *design*"

sure if M3 reuses the same 13" design, touchbar would still be there.
The next gen “design” of the new MacBook Airs & larger Pros as a flat square pancake is uninspired & looks like it was designed by the parts department to keep things cheap. Picking them up they, feel like bricks.

The 13” MacBook Pro is a little thicker & heavier than the MacBook Airs. However when you look at the 13” Pro it looks thinner & feels lighter when picked up. I hope they keep this design for the future 13” MacBook Pros. I willingly admit I envy the Midnight color choice, but not at the expense of design & function.

Again, not completely, but at least another big step that would require a transition period.

In the context, he said for transition #1 "PowerPC setup Apple for the next decade" and PowerPC was killed off
Immediately after that statement, he shows transition #2 says "OS X [...] has set Apple up for the next 20 years".

That jives with what I'm saying?

Again, that's jiving with what I'm saying? When OP said lighting should last a decade, it didn't last exactly a decade it turns out.

That's what OP was saying. I'm making that same counter-argument.

This also jives with what I'm saying. Portless would be an option that Apple switches to.

Yes this is the one I recall. And they do have the best gaming machine. At the time they didn't have portable handhelds so it's not like they were going to announce a completely new line of gaming products.

Because of iPhone.

The video directly address the question of "will there be a touchscreen mac" and craig said "had working models but it really was a compromise...grafting touch on something that fundamentally was designed around a precise pointer really compromises the experience"

Great so the point about lighting living for a decade is actually pointless. That jives with what I'm saying.

Never said exactly. OP is pointing out lightning should have been exactly.
Oh, I didn’t realize you were talking about what OP was stating there. Guess we agree then. 👍🏻

Though how exactly do you know Apple is surely planning on moving to portless ? I mean yes, there were rumors about that, but they are still rumors and they’re not confirmed. So all of this could be just wrong..

If Apple was for sure gonna switch to portless, I think they would’ve just done it this year instead of switching to USB-C. If the EU would disagree with that or the technology is not ready yet, then that’s a different story..

Yeah I totally agree. It was truly a cool and fun feature that was sadly under-appreciated by Apple.
But I think part of it is the fact that it replaces the physical Function keys, which many people seemed to dislike. It even used to replace the Escape key in the older models, but at least the current model has a physical Escape key. I think this could be the reason why Apple decided to ditch it in the redesigned models.

Now that there’s currently only one model with the TouchBar (which Apple may end up killing soon since it has the older design) I don’t think developers will bother develop for it anymore.. it’s so sad to see it gone so quickly when it did seem to have some real potential.

Jony mentioned in one of the product intro videos that this was the direction they're going in. IIRC the words were "...portless future".

It's honestly bizarre the direction they have taken with the laptops, back in the last days of Intel they were sticking super hot i9s in a thin 15 inch Macbook Pro chasis that couldn't really handle it.

Now they have got the silicon that could accommodate a design like that they have made the Pro laptops big thick bricks.

You can easily tell the products from Apple that Jony Ive had nothing to do with…

I totally agree ! The design was one of the reasons I went for the 13” MacBook Pro instead of the Air. I don’t really like the new design for the same reasons you mentioned, besides the notch, it’s not pretty at all !
I mean yes, they had to add it for the webcam and the other sensors in favor of thinner bezels, but personally, I’d rather have the thicker bezels than a notch on my laptop.
In my opinion, there was nothing wrong with the older design in the first place, in fact I highly prefer it over the new one. And I do agree about the Midnight color, it’s such a snazzy color option ! Apple really needs to offer more color options for the MBP models other than just Space Gray and Silver..

I don’t know, but just because Jony Ive said that doesn’t really mean it’s guaranteed to happen in my opinion.

I mean, wasn’t Jony Ive the same guy who wanted everything to be incredibly thin ? 😅 while Apple seemed to be taking this approach a while ago, it seemingly didn’t work out for them as they later started making their products thicker and heavier instead. Just look at how heavy and bulky iPhones are right now.. but they did that in favor of adding bigger batteries, better camera sensors and other technologies that would not work out with incredibly thin phones. So it turned out that was not really the correct approach after all..

I don’t think going completely portless would be a good approach either as I personally prefer wired charging, but hey if Apple was really planning on a portless future anyways, I think they would’ve already done it this year. They could easily just force MagSafe on everyone, like what is stopping them from doing that ? Again, unless it has something to do with the EU or the technology is not ready yet, I think they could’ve simply done it this year instead of switching to USB-C if that was truly the future they were looking forward to.
Though if the EU was also against the idea of going completely portless, then I guess this may just never happen..

I never said it's guaranteed to go portless. Just like going USB-C, it was never guaranteed iPhone would have gone USB-C before EU law.

They wouldn't have done it already as it's unlikely they have enough production capacity to produce several hundred million wireless chargers. Even if they don't include it in the box, it's very telling that they won't be able to handle the sudden demand in MagSafe chargers. It seems to me they want to soften the demand curve of MagSafe charging (or at least wireless charging in general) before they remove the port. So I believe the original plan was to continue lighting for at least a few more years until Qi wireless chargers in general are ubiquitous enough to remove the port.

I agree with you completely.

But having to argue that anything better than USB 2.0 is just for "professional needs" highlights how ridiculous this discussion is.

USB-C is the standard that you get in all new consumer tech and is dirt cheap to implement in hardware, even the high-quality and high-speed ports like the ones you see in MacBooks and iPads.

This positioning as anything better than Lightning as frivolous, weird, not trustworthy, "flimsy" or unnecessary just proves how deep the Apple propaganda goes.

And Apple fans wonder where the "iSheep" stereo type comes from. Lol.

Who in their right mind wants to spend $999+ on a smartphone with I/O that's 10+ years old?

Lightning was great in 2012.

But now, 10 years later, it's just time to move on to something faster, better, and cross-compatible with every other consumer technology product made in the last 5-10 years, "professional" needs or not.
Spot on.

And the cost of USB-C, like Bluetooth 5.3, both which can be found in audio devices that cost maybe $20.

We could be looking at the iPhone 15 USB C cables. Looks like we will be getting matching colors for the iPhone. In addition, they are braided. More durable! 👀

We might be looking at no cable in the box on day too. Source not confirmed as of yet.
