Does anyone know if restoring from an iTunes backup would make a difference? With messages in the cloud, I don’t even know if a backup would include the messages. Maybe just the ones locally on my old phone?

Guys please call into apple support and escalate this. This is a serious issue

I plan on calling in tomorrow. Should I ask for a Tier 1 support rep right away? Or try to see if they will transfer me on their own?

Weird, this issue just totally resolved itself for me today and I now have all my messages on my Xs.

They had to transfer me but you can try asking for a higher level of support

What was your issue exactly and what was resolved?

Were you missing messages in the middle of your message history? That’s basically my issue. I have some new ones and I have older ones with a gap. Before the gap
Was a week. Now the gap is a month wide.
I have threads that didn’t even carry over and for the ones that did, it’s missing a **** ton of data

I wiped my phone again and restored from an itunes backup I made of my old phone right before. This time, my messages all seem to be there. Things aren't completely in sync though. On my new phone I have 3 message threads I have deleted on other devices, but they are on the new phone for some reason.

The main message thread from my wife seems intact and that's what was most important to me. I keep loading more and more messages and as it went back, each day seems to be there. Going to keep letting it do it's thing though.

You should not have to be doing that. iMessage in iCloud is supposed to sync your messages from your old device to your new device when you set up as new

My issue was the same as iAdamator. It initially synced a bunch of older messages, and some newer ones, with there being a wide gap in between. When I checked yesterday it seemed like all of the missing ones eventually came through.

Lucky. Mine are still missing a lot

I have the same issue, on both mine and my wife's new iPhone XS. Updated using the "from a nearby device" and iCloud back up. All my other devices are synced, but on my XS I am missing most messages from 2018, while my wife has a 1-2 week gap between today and early September. Have tried setting up again, turning iMessage off and on, and it alway syncs back to the same incomplete location, with the download progress bar showing no progress, if its' there.

I just upgraded from the X to Xs Max only getting SMS green messages on my phone but not on ipads or apple watch. imessage blue messages appear to be working though and synced across all devices. I usually don't keep message threads so can't really comment on that. I will wait it out for now.
[doublepost=1537821638][/doublepost]Did more testing I can send an sms message from both the apple watch and ipad and I get them on a test android device and the sent sms shows up on the iPhone. The strange thing is that eventually I will get a not delivered red error in the messages app on both the iPad and Watch even though they went though. When texting back from the android phone the reply only goes to the iPhone. I really don't want to do another restore to fix this...

This process fixed mine.

1. Power off all devices and then restart

2. Using iPhone, turn OFF iMessage in Settings/Messages (this is an important step)

3. Go to Settings/General/Reset & then press Reset Network Settings. (this will unfortunately also clear the passwords for any WiFi connections) s

4. Reinput passwords for WiFi connections in Settings/WiFi

5. Turn iMessage ON in Settings/Messages

Extra steps if needed.
6. Press Text Message Forwarding just below this (may take a few seconds to appear after turning iMessages on)

7. Slide button on for one or all preferred devices.

8. Device should be connected, shown by a green slide bar. If not power down the relevant device (not the iPhone) and repeat steps.

what exactly was the issue that you were seeing?

Some of what was reported in this thread. SMS not working across devices. Looks like there are two issues in this thread.

Tried this and it didn’t work. Still missing entire threads

I had this similar problem. Messages missing from 3 months up to one year. I tried all the solutions mentioned in this thread. Was on the phone with Apple support for 2 hours. Strange thing is I tried downloading all the messages onto my iPad and it worked perfectly. The messages were in iCloud, I just couldn’t get them onto my Xs.

What worked for me: I finally Reset All Settings, not erase just reset. Then toggled the Messages in iCloud and IMessage in Settings. Signed in again and that triggered the messages to start downloading from iCloud. It asked me to connect to Wifi while downloading and seemed to take about an hour. I had 10G of messages. Hopefully this works for you. Good luck.

When you reset settings, were none of your threads already on the new phone or did you have some but some were missing that finally came back when you reset?

Thank you for posting this. I followed the same steps and was not so lucky. Still missing 2-3 months of messages and everything is in wacky order.

Thank you so much that worked

On the phone with Apple Support right now, they are going to escalate the issue to a senior advisor. Will update as I go along!
