Why does Infuse take a while before it starts playing media when streaming from a network device?

I have an iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6S+ which are using 802.11ac. My NAS supports FTP, SMB2, NFS, etc and has a local read speed of almost 400 MB/s.

If I play media on my HTPC or even my Android tablets (using MX Player), even my 20 GB movies start playing almost instantly.

Does Infuse have a large read buffer or what might be causing this slow start time?

Hmm, it would be interesting to learn a little bit more about what you are seeing. Would you mind sending in a quick email from the app? More details on how to do this can be found here. http://support.firecore.com/entries/26759150-Submitting-Diagnostic-Logs

FWIW, most videos we've tested start within a few seconds with a decent Wi-Fi signal.

Thanks for the fast response! I'm at work, but I'll submit a diagnostic log tonight at home.

However, can you tell me if Infuse does read a large (?) buffer before starting video playback? I've seen other applications allow you to adjust this. I believe the benefit to a large buffer is to prevent stuttering during network problems, but a large buffer would take longer to start playback and longer to seek during playback.

Also, does Infuse use SMB 1.0 or support something faster like 2.1?

Infuse does use a buffer, though I don't believe it's massive. Including an adjustable option is something we'll probably be adding in the future.

Right now Infuse defaults to SMB2, but will fallback to SMB1 for devices that require it. The groundwork for SMB3 is in place, and will be added down the road.

Would it be possible to do realtime transcode to Apple friendly format for pip?

Can infuse 3 transfer and read media files from the mophie spack pack for iphone 6 plus? All references refer to the iphone 5 version only.

Thanks

Infuse3 doesn't seem to have a "open in" function from other applications.. I use QFile (an iOS app) for QNAP NAS systems and it provides me a file system for my QNAP content but when I click on a video file to play something, it lists applications I can open the file in on my iPad but Infuse is not one of them..

Can you add in the "open with" function in a future version and i'd purchase this in a heartbeat.

Try an app called FileBrowser. It should work with QNAP and it has built in support for IOS compatible video playback. For other types (like mkv) it has option to stream to infuse. But having said that, wouldn't infuse connect direct to your NAS?

Infuse only connects to my QNAP when i'm on the local network to the QNAP.. QFile on the other hand gives me full access to my QNAP over the internet using dynamic DNS to their public DDNS server to bounce back to my home internet's IP. It also appears the MyQNAPCloud service is proprietary to QNAP and only is accessable over HTTP (web gui only). So basically I just need "Open with" functionality out of QFile to Infuse..

Yes, Infuse works with the newer iPhone 6/6+ size space packs as well.

Native iOS open-in is actually supported, though for some reason a number of NAS apps roll their own open-in feature which requires them to maintain a list of supported apps. We've reached out to most of the major ones, and a number of them (including Synology) have started adding Infuse as a supported app.

Infuse only connects to my QNAP when i'm on the local network to the QNAP.. QFile on the other hand gives me full access to my QNAP over the internet using dynamic DNS to their public DDNS server to bounce back to my home internet's IP. Infuse should work in the case as well using WebDAV. The share itself would need to be setup manually using the DDNS address, as Infuse won't be able to detect that automatically. You may need to check with QNAP on the exact settings to use, as these will vary based on their implementation.

Thanks but I add a lot of Youtube videos I download to a Video directory and like to name the videos what I want.
Got it.

Unfortunately this isn't possible at the moment. It may be something we look at adding in the future.

Can you add a option to disable the watched/unwatched circle in the app if possible ? I don't really use it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not sure how quickly we can get to it, but we'll see what we can do.

Can you edit the metadata to correct mismatches, or rename movies in case your naming was wrong and it isn't being picked up? I found infuse after seeing a video about it for the new Apple TV, so I'm trying out the free iPad app first to see if it'd be a good plex alternative (so I don't need a media server running 24/7). But I need to be able to edit files.

Also, any plans for something similar to the 'on deck' feature in plex, where it surfaces the next episodes of TV shows you've watched so you can continue watching straight from the top menu? I use that a lot.

Yes - you can search for title matches by using the Edit Metadata option found when dragging down on the ticket view.

A bit more info on this can be found here.

We're looking into a few options for this. Stay tuned.

Thanks. My iPad seems to crap out after a while on large collections, having a bunch of movies at the bottom of a list all done nicely, and the top of the list is blank thumbnails mixed in with a few correct movies. All a bit odd. I'll try it a few more times, see if it sorts itself out.

Can see this being a nice alternative to plex, and being independent of a central server will be very helpful - I can use trackt for syncing watched episodes

Thanks for the feedback. We've actually been tracking down a few issues like this, and have made quite a few performance improvements for the upcoming 4.0 version for iOS (4.0.1 on tvOS). The end result is about a 5x speed increase in how long it takes a library to populate...good stuff. :)

You going to make me download a new app and scan everything in again? ;) good to hear about the increased speed. How about an option to back up my metadata to iCloud/Dropbox etc?

Still on the free version which means it plays almost nothing because all my stuff is AC3. I'd be happy for it to play without audio so I can check streaming and playback quality though. will pull the trigger once I've figured out if this is for me or not.

v4 will actually be a free update for the existing app...so all your info will be retained. ;)

iCloud syncing is something we're looking at for a future version.
