I'm as guilty as anyone to want the newest and love that "new phone smell". I always take a step back these days and it gives me a chance to realize that the newness factor does wear off and rather quickly. But those payments go on for 2 years. Realizing that I can be quite content with a year or so older phone that basically works just fine for me I just "stand pat".
I traded a used iphone 6 in to Verizon several months ago for a straight across trade for a new iphone7. This did lock me in for 2 years but no extra cash as long as I didnt leave which I had no intention of doing. So a win/win for me. Maybe in another year or so they will offer the same deal on the new iphone 8. I'm done with yearly upgrades when my year old tech still works like new. The lame new innovations aren't worth the high prices IMHO. There are deals to be had but excersizing some self control is a must when a new release comes out. Save your money and pay cash next time. :)

Good advice. Very good deal that you got to turn in the old for the new without additional cost. I actually have the money to buy the phone outright - I just prefer to get something cheaper these days and save the money for something else. Unless I see a deal like you got, I think I am going to hold off on the upgrade.

Before I got the 7 Plus 128GB, I was coming from an iPhone 6 Plus with 16GB. The phone was great but what pushed me over the edge was the storage option. Couldn't last with just 16GB anymore. What I should have done is just upgraded to the 6 Plus 64GB or 6S Plus 64GB.

Anyway, nothing can't be undone. My phone is worth more than what I owe on it. Easy to make the change but just trying to figure out where I might go from here.

Really? This is incredible. No wonder other countries laugh at us here in the USA. I mean, $140 a month for a phone bill?! What regular person can afford that along with rent prices? Oy!
You probably know this, but in the EU most people buy their phones outright and unlocked. They understand how much a phone actually costs, and plan for it.

I didn't know that either. I've always thought contracts were the norm throughout the EU. I know buying outright in the UK is not the mainstream method as contracts are so much cheaper initially. Sim only contracts in old devices are becoming popular but buying flagship devices outright is expensive and not hugely popular in my experience.

if you have to "lease" a phone you should not own one.
Yeah, see you just don't get it. Why would I pay outright, to turn around and have to deal with the hassle of selling a year from now. I'm guaranteed 50% resale value by using the IUP, no fees, no hassle, no risk at being scammed.

Some years I have gotten more than 50% after fees, but other years I have taken a hit. This is risk-free.

So you are in the opinion that if you rent a phone you should also buy one?

My opinion is that if you like the hassle of reselling Phones, having to deal with the insane amount of refund fraud then sure, if you plan on keeping the device for more than 1 year then sure...buy it outright. If you like the latest and greatest every year then rent. It's that simple ~~~

iPhones are just too expensive these days. A device that texts, calls, and surfs shouldn't cost $1000+
I think you mean smartphones, not iPhones. Samsung charges just as much for their devices. Actually more if you look at how much storage you are getting built in.

S8 = $720-$750
S8 Plus = $840-$850

Pretty much on par for the middle level storage of both the 7 and 7 Plus, and iPhone gets you double the base storage for that price (128GB vs. 64GB).

I understand.

I just think it's way too high of a price.

Yeah, the price may be to high in many opinions. No one is twisting anyone's arm to force them into it. There are tons of options. I will be utilizing another option. We all speak with our wallets either way.

I've bought my iPhones normally outright, including my iPhone 7+ for the sole purpose that it gets passed down to my little sister. For the 8, I'm going to just finance it - eh.

So, if the rumors are true about the iPhone 8, iPhone Edition, iPhone Pro, whatever it's called..
we'll be paying at least $1000 for our next iPhone.
Buddy... I been previously paying over $1000 for the iPhones every year... I am from Canada

S8 is EU costs around €630 and S8+ costs 740. Cheapest iPhone 7 32GB costs €769...
Samsung doesn't charge as much, it's just Apple. And this year we will get the all new IPhone 8 with one year old Samsung features for just €1300-1500 ;)

The world is larger than only the USA, you should definitely consider smartphone prices outside the box.

I'm with you TheBeat07, here in Australia we also pay over $1000 for our iPhones. Get a load of these prices:
iPhone 7 32GB $1079, 128GB $1229, 256GB $1379.
iPhone 7 Plus 32GB $1269, 128GB $1419, 256GB $1569

Still looking forward to the new smaller model.

"Samsung doesn't charge as much.."

I just proved that wrong. In the US they charge more. It doesn't matter if they only charge more in one country, my point is still valid.

Has nothing to do with the world being larger than the USA. I'm using the USA as an example.

Edit: Lets use UK as another example.
iPhone 7 128GB = 699
iPhone 7+ 128GB = 819

S8 64GB = 689
S8+ 64GB = 779

Again spending pretty much the same, but for 2x the storage.

What about Australia?
iPhone 7 128GB = 1229
iPhone 7+ 128GB = 1419

S8 64GB = 1199
S8+ 64GB = 1349

So again, pretty much just as expensive but you get double the storage.

Here in Serbia, it is best to buy on two year contract. Vip Mobile network sell iPhone and other flagship phones simfree so it beneficial when going abroad on weekends or summer holiday in any other country, so I use croatian prepaid sim card for internet (6GB LTE for 7.5 euros (in whole EU), so because it is prepaid I'm using this offer only when i'm going out 4-5 times in year).

I bought iPhone 7 in late october for 480 euros on 24 monthly installments and in my postpaid I have 700 minutes for all networks (its not like in US if i'm calling somebody that somebody is charged too) 700sms and 2.8GB of data and that is 18 euros. Two year warranty because it is EU law. When you are buying without contract for base model it is about 850 euros (iPhone 7 32GB)

So 38 euros monthly for two years, after that if I want to sold it after two years I get about 300 euros (It was that price for iPhone 6 after 7 was launched).

iPhone 8 or X or whatever name will be I'm gonna skip (mostly because i think FP wouldn't be under screen) and next year they will implement all that to be as good as it needs to be.

This not the case in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Portugal, Luxembourg, Greece and all scandinavian countries included.

Samsung is significantly cheaper here and offers more features (I'm addicted to IOS :p ). Dunno about the U.K. tough, their economy is so messed up that £ almost equals $ regarding product prices....
Eventough the S8 is cheaper here, I have to mention that the IPhone 7 prices should be compared to Galaxy S7 when it comes to feutures. For now, the S8 is just waaaaaaay to fancy to consider a comparison to any iPhone, but hopefully this will change in September.
