I know!!! It's entirely possible that Apple could have released an OSX tablet which sells for less than any of their laptops! That's totally believable and doesn't ignore any economic, engineering, or design sense at all!

crazier things have happened. Did they not drop the price of the iPhone so soon after it's release that it pissed off the early adopters and therefore, they issued gift cards? (or whatever perk they gave--I forgot the details)

battery pulls are a BB user's best friend. :)

Any user who finds too much multitasking is bringing their device to a crawl will simply turn off the less necessary apps and run the one or two that they most need at the moment.
The point of your first quote pretty much negates the point in your second quote, IMO.

Obviously, if the majority of users were taking the time to manage the resources in the current batch of multitasking mobile devices out there, "battery pulls" (or apps that schedule restarts) wouldn't be their best friends.

You don't fully understand why battery pulls are needed on the BB platform. It's not used primarily for issues due to excessive multitasking. It's due to other factors related simply to defects in memory management. A battery pull could be needed without one doing ANYTHING on their BB but turning it on and trying to use it, one app at a time. Been there, done that! ie it isn't multitasking per se that is at the heart of the matter for battery pulls.

Of course!

(1) Apple has the technology to sell an OS X tablet for less than they sell their laptops, and would do so, undercutting their very own product line

is far less crazy than

(2) Apple lowered the price on a product which doesn't compete with anything else they sell, and reimbursed early consumers

You know, I don't remember saying that an Apple tablet would only interest me if it cost just $500. IF it had OSX and cost, say around $750 or a bit more even, I might be VERY INTERESTED. Try not to be so myopic in your thinking... :)

Hahahaha way to miss the point entirely. BB users who have trouble with multitasking don't do what you say is so easy and expected of them, which is to turn off the less necessary apps. They have to resort to something else, which is battery pulls. It's irrelevant that most battery pulls are used in other contexts.

The very thing you say people will do without any trouble whatsoever when the device slows down (turn off apps, manage memory), people don't do! So on one hand, we have evidence, while way over in left field, we have dave1812dave (as usual) with speculation which contradicts the evidence.

Multitasking COMPUTERS don't have issues to the extent that a BB user may have with battery pulls(which again, aren't really directly related to multitasking issues). Apple COULD have developed a very cool tablet device with a REAL OS on it--one that multitasks. Instead, we get a giant Touch. A Touch I can't put in my pocket--therefore it's not very useful because at home I've got 3 computers already with various screen sizes and form factors. So the iPad serves no useful purpose. Had they at least included Flash and multitasking (even without OSX) I'd be on board. Apple let many people down with the iPad.

Oh, well then,

How much do you think this would cost? Do you think it would do anything better than a comparably-priced Apple laptop?

A bloo bloo bloo. Wow, the iPad isn't useful for every single person, and the same old from dave1812dave. You know, we can just go read your old threads for your insights, you don't have to keep posting.

YOU don't get to tell ME what to do. In fact, why not put me on your ignore list--then it will appear to you that I am not posting. How's that for a practical solution for ya?

lol so much hate and anger. :D

LOL! no, no! Not either! Just telling it like it is. I'm not upset. I just don't agree with people who like to control others. If someone doesn't like my posts, they can ignore me (put me in their ignore list) or they can rebut my comments with something sensible. what they don't get to do, unchallenged, is to claim I have no business posting.

Since when is providing some much-needed advice 'trying to control someone'? I only let you know that you were repeating yourself and suggested that you didn't have to. Oh, I have an idea,

why not put me on your ignore list

Exactly. If you don't like my posts, put me on ignore. :)

as if no one here repeats themselves. right...

sorta like Jobs claiming that Flash is evil and will kill take battery life from 10 hours to 1.5. right... like someone is going to be running flash CONSTANTLY. check the news forum for the article... https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/866796/

Actually, since Safari continues to run in the background, someone running flash CONSTANTLY is a very real concern.

Ok - different angle for those protesting multitasking

Why not a pop up that say "Close" and "Keep running" when you exit an app

That way the stupid user who doesn't understand that multitasking is going to slow their system or run their battery down is alerted that there are processes running if they chose "keep running"

Surely that's "intuitive" enough for all the people you're talking about, no?

I'm not protesting multitasking, but I'll bite anyway. it sounds like a kludgy solution to me. That would get annoying pretty fast.

If apps were to save their state when you exit them, can I ask what things multitasking would be useful for beyond streaming Internet radio? If you need to run programs side-by-side, then I think a laptop or desktop would be better.

I've got a netbook that runs more than 7+ hours on a charge, while ON LINE, in a browser. It typically goes well past the 8 hour mark before the battery gets low enough that I need to plug it in. I think there's way too much Apple-caused hysteria over Flash. Seriously.

on my BB, Pandora has "close" and "shut down" options on the menu. "shut down" stops pandora. "close" removes it from the screen. works fine. but then again, a BB can MULTITASK...

I would be ok with widgets and not even "true" multitasking

But it would be nice - if I were to ever buy an iPad - that I could work on a document at the same time as having a twitter feed going and an IM window open.

Or that I could have email open and a document open to cut/paste across the two without close/open copy/close open/paste. Much easier to have them side by side open at the same time. No?

Fantastic. What does that have to do with Flash on the iPhone OS?

Out of curiosity, what are you comparing the AppleTV to to determine its "flop" status?
Not really a flop I suppose but it never really achieved the success that their other devices attained. Rumors of its demise continue to circulate since its tepid release. Like the tablet computer, apple tv is a solution in search of a problem.

Again, those situations have little to do with multitasking and more to do with app switching. There is no need for any of them to run in the background in order for you to accomplish what you are describing.
