I think people are overlooking how radical this design is.

Apple have become masters of building devices from Aluminum and glass. These are now Apples trademark materials. Look at the iPad.

When you pick this up, you would only touch glass and metal. There is no plastic anywhere.

Unless it's the 3G iPad where you would also touch its black plastic antenna cover. ;)

It's indeed the same font. You "detail oriented" peopled...

Really?

Even if it's not exactly the same font it's pretty close. I don't think the case should be discredited because of it. Companies change fonts all the time and I wouldn't put it past apple to considering their continuous strive for perfection. I would prefer a rounded unibody back but it's loads better then the other leaked images. Like ang company I'm sure they have a whole room full of prototypes. These might be two years old for all we know.

That's pretty obviously a computer generated image though right? Even though there is so much speculation, I think there are certain things we know the device will have and just thinking about it makes me look forward to the new one coming out so much! I wouldn't be too suprised if the new one does look similar to the prototype (but cleaner edges). I wouldn't be too surprised by removable battery, front facing camera with flash, rotation controls, better speakers or microSIM either. I think Apple will listen to it's customer base and try and deliver with this release. I think OS4 will reflect this as well. They want to attack the competition before android gets any more marketshare. Least one can hope...

Just a thought, I noticed on the MacRumours front page that an article has been removed due to a request that it be removed from Apple. If this were actually a prototype of the coming iPhone, surely they would request this were also removed?

Lol, that front screen on the back, where the clips are - doesn't look like glass. Looks like plastic to me. Up near the ear piece.

Interesting. We will all know in June for sure :)

Couple things to keep in mind - first, the iPad pic was obviously real, and was leaked before the iPad got announced. It's in some strange frame (possibly to hide the actual look of the device), but it's still obviously the iPad. So that is a 100% legit picture. There are two iPhones in the picture, one full one sitting on the iPad, one on the bare edge of the picture. The edges of those devices look exactly like the edges on this thing. So it's pretty safe to say this thing is legit as well.

Second, Apple is big on secrecy. When the iPhone was being developed, before it was officially shown off, there were two separate teams working on it, hardware and software (and sub teams within those groups). The hardware guys got the barest in placeholder software, just enough to test the hardware functionality (we've actually seen this, when a prototype iPhone went up for sale on eBay - all the icons/buttons were blue rectangles with white text, and were mainly test functions). The software guys got generic boxes full of electronics. Both groups got various designs, to hide the final design and to help point at who leaked any information.

So this could very well be a prototype that's not the final design, or at least an earlier design.

What article was removed?

I was going to say this, but as I read your post I realized that this purported iPhone "4G" seems so finalized (minus the little spaces or joints on the device), that I doubt apple would go full out and create a pretty decent looking iPhone only for it to be used for testing, then scrap the design altogether. I think the design is pretty legit at this point...
But what do I know?

I kinda like it

The dual-material design makes sense to me. I would imagine having mixed materials in the case design would really stick in Jobs' craw (original iPhone, iTouch, iPad 3G) as it takes away from the overall clean look of the device. This plastic back and aluminum frame design would allow for clear reception and still keep the Apple design family intact. I might go as far as saying I hope this is what the final device looks like. It's pretty sexy, IMHO.

As far as that aluminum back image is concerned; it's an obvious fake made by a fairly talented 3D illustrator/artist. Beyond the fact that an all-metal body is near impossible on a mobile phone, just look at the cardboard box it's sitting on; clearly an illustration.

Can;t wait til June to find out though. My 3G is showing its age.

I really like the uni-body style look with the thick aluminium sides. When you see it against a lot of the serious (non iphone) business phones getting around, this one has a look that I think the business community is going to really take too.

Apple have convinced regular consumers, gamers etc to get on board and a certain number of the business community. With this chunky look with the little splits in the design or not I think they could get a lot more business users on board, and that'd really make the iphone universal.

Looks like it could be legit, and I like the looks of it.

Here's what it's going to take for me to buy it:

SuperAMOLED screen. At least 3.7"
The same (or better) processor as what's in the Samsung Galaxy S
Able to use Sprint's 4G network
Compatible with existing car stereo integration
720p video recording with 720p output
Good battery life

I think it'll be close, but not quite. Probably get the HTC Evo 4G instead.

It won't use sprint and won't use AMOLED

I didn't say AMOLED. I said Super AMOLED. It's new from Samsung, and I'm guessing that it will be the new standard in cell phones soon. With Samsung's close relationship with Apple, I wouldn't be surprised to see the new iPhone being the first non-Samsung phone to use this tech. Honestly, I'd be surprised to see the iPhone's specs being very different from the Galaxy S's at all.

If the iPhone goes to Verizon, it could also be released on Sprint VERY easily. The 4G part would be more difficult since it would require another radio.

my 2 cents worth

As I have been eagerly looking forward to the new iPhone hardware I have been consuming and digesting as much info on this topic as my schedule allows. That being said I believe the following:

The pictures from the opening of this thread are legit. - Because the design has such a close resemblence to what has been released by Giz.
The pictures (and later video) first made available by Giz are from a prototype stolen from Apple in January of this year. - John Gruber et al.
The final iPhone released will be similar to the prototype sans the seams and screws. - observing past and present Apple design.

These conclusions may very well be debatable but in the end I don`t think I`m too far off on this.

What are your thoughts?

It won't use super amoled, great amoled, or any other kind of amoled.
