The card was a sapphire card supporting OSX. Does that answer your question? Do I need to flash it somehow? - Thanks

See:
https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sapphire/100352MAC2/

For this card, as long as the ROM switch is at he correct position (Boot from Mac EFI ROM), the firmware should able to update without issue (I did my firmware update with the exact same card).

I have a non-Mac but flashed AMD Radeon HD 7950 in my mid-2010 (has the boot screen).

Will the firmware be an issue and should I try to find a stock card somewhere before I plan to upgrade?

It should be OK

Thanks - How do I know if the switch is in the correct position? I assumed it was because I have been running OS X with this card for several years.

Your card will work fine in even you boot from the PC ROM.

The easiest way to know is if you can see the boot screen (the screen will light up BEFORE the “don” sound, or you can see the boot manager if you hold “option” key during boot).

I have a flashed GTX680 4GB, no OEM GPU at hand and I do not get the firmware update to work. Mannnnn I'll have to check our CL to find a GT120 or something...

^^^^It should work. I have a flashed GTX 1080 and the FW update worked like a charm - TWICE!

I just tried installing using a USB OS X installer image. Fail.

I really couldn't understand why need a USB installer, especially we can have multiple SSD/HDD on a cMP.

Do you mind try the "native way"? Just download from the Appstore and let the installer run from the hard drive.

The OS may able to install via USB, however, for firmware, AFAIK, on the cMP can only be installed via optical drive or hard drive.

I've tried the install both from the App Store and usb. Both fail.

I installed High Sierra on my old iMac no problem. Notice firmware update which happened automatically during the installation. Also noticed upgrade took significantly longer than previours upgrades. At times I was tempted to restart and it was stuck on 45 minutes remaining for a long time. Just hang in there and it will progress if you think it has stuck.

I don't know what to say. I tried it in a bone stock machine. No problems what so ever, I even used a spinner drive.

Only problem I had was when I setup the new login password I forgot it and had to go into terminal to reset it.

Anyone else having trouble installing High Sierra? Downloaded successfully, says a firmware update is needed by holding power button. I have tried multiple times but it never goes through the install on bootup. Anyone else experiencing similar problem?

Do you happen to have an OWC SSD drive? I do (on 3 of my cheese-graters), and I'm experiencing exactly what you've described. Seems I/we have to be a bit patient. :)

Ok, all of a sudden the helper tool installed, shutdown the system and we seem to be in business... Only thing I did now was removing the install macOS High Sierra app out of the applications folder so that I could download it again (was thinking that maybe the download was corrupt). But after removing and going into the App Store, it just said “open” instead of “download”, so what the hell? Ok “open” then, and thats when it started working.

I don’t think that I needed an Apple OEM HD5870 in the end, but who knows?

Mac OS High Sierra want the update firmware,in my MacPro 5.1(mid 2010).
Tell me please, there are the biggest problems?
My video card is AMD Radeon HD 7950 Mac Edition(Apple Cinema Display is connected to the display port),
and have a some small problem. The video card has a small bug.
Mac OS Sierra 10.12.6 boots Apple logo normal, up to the half line, then screen goes black,
and then the Apple logo is show again, and progress is continue fine, and system loaded successfully.
If i updating firmware, have i the biggest problem, when i updating Mac Pro 5.1(mid 2010) firmware?
If there is an error, will my Mac Pro 5.1(2010) is my Mac Pro die? Can i return to old firmware?
Thanks so much for help.Sorry my English.

^^^^My MVC flashed Nvidia GTX 1080 acts the same way as your Radeon. Updating FW was not an issue. The FW updates in EFI so your screen should not go black while the FW is updating and you can watch the update progress.

Good Luck to you. Your FW update should go smoothly.

Don't worry, as long as you don't intentionally disturb the firmware upgrade (e.g. pull the power), I still haven't see a single case that the 5,1 is bricked.

And if you are unlucky enough to brick it, there is a firmware restoration CD can be download on Apple supporting page, which will allow you to fix your cMP.

I am having the same problem, I'm trying to install on my current boot drive which is a Samsung SSD. I have posted on the Apple forums to be told that our full do not do firmware updates for non-supported SSD's unless I should try to replace the sum someone for an item that Apple supports.

Folks, if you're having trouble installing the firmware try a PRAM reset prior to attempting to install the firmware.
Please report back if this helps.
