Anyone else experiencing the following problem? After the computer goes into "deep" sleep (~1+ hour of sleep), it takes around 5 seconds for the computer to return to its usable state. No trackpad or keyboard response for about 5 seconds.

I don't see how this resume-from-sleep is any different from that of my MBP then? Hmmm...

Yes, this is the way it works. If 5 seconds to come out of deep sleep is your worst problem then you are pretty lucky.

Oh come on. Name another system that comes up in 5 seconds? Please!

Any MB or MBP. They won't go into hibernate; i.e., keep the RAM powered, so they are instant-on. But no 30-days standby though. Also, iPad is instant-on, with a very long standby time.

I started another thread about this, and I too, don't like how Apple advertised the new MBA by making a big fuss about the instant-on feature and 30-days standby... and how they learned so much from the iPad. It seemed like all the did was programmed MBA to go from sleep mode 3 to mode 1 after one hour. No ground breaking technology here from what I can tell.

I couldn't tell you... But what I'm saying is that I see absolutely no improvement over any of Apple's past intel notebooks.

Here's the improvement, it lasts 30 days when in sleep and still comes up as fast as before. Try lasting 30 days in sleep mode with a MBP.

I believe the real benefit of the "instant-on" is the reboot and startup times. I don't recall too much hub-bub regarding waking from sleep. Which IMO has already been extremely fast for all Macs (portable or desktop).

Get over it friend.

It makes absolutely no sense when Apple markets instant-on?

It's "instant on" when it doesn't go into deep sleep. If you don't want it to go into deep sleep, leave it plugged in, or put something into the SD card slot or USB port. However, then you won't get the 30 day standby time.

Apple can't change the laws of physics. Either it keeps a steady power supply to the RAM, or it takes a few extra seconds to become active.

I'm so annoyed that people jump on to veraciously defend Apple at the whisper of a complaint.

You're all ignoring the OP.

You've got a point, the MBA does not instant on and 5seconds is slow. Many many many laptops can wake up in that time.
The OP was not talking about the 30days sleep.

People like those on this thread who instantly flames a person for complaining give Apple products a bad name. I defend Apple where appropriate and admit the incorrect claims/cons of a MAC product.

Well, actually he was referring to the "deep sleep."

I couldn't care less about 30 days of standby battery life. I bought my computer to use it, not to let it sit around.

In other words, anyone know of a a series of terminal commands to keep the MBA from going into mode 1 sleep? The benefits outweigh the costs for me.

I don't know of any terminal commands (though there probably are some), but if you have a 13" model, an easy way is to stick a cheap SD card into the SD slot. It prevents it from going into Deep Sleep.

I understand the OP. I'm not jumping on it because I'm a zealot. I'm jumping on it because I think it's a silly complaint. Arguing over 5 seconds is ridiculous in my opinion if it gives you 30 days sleep which no other laptop provides.

Yeah TBH I've no idea how long my MBP will last on standby/sleep as I've never not used it for more than a day, let alone 30....

If this is a deal breaker then return the computer.

It's definitely not a deal breaker, though. I do find it contradictory to Apple's marketing, as the MBA was "inspired by the ipad". What rubbish. There are no functional differences beside deep sleep and a faster SSD than what had been used previously.
