Just switched my iMac over from Wi-Fi to Ethernet and got a better result than before. The download speed is double what I'm actually paying for. For once, I'm getting more than I pay for and I'm happy about it! :D And to boot, It's 5pm here which is a typically high load time for the ISP.

I've been on Wi-Fi for a few months because I just got around to running some cable and patch panels today.

semi-brag! :D

I'm getting fiber as soon as the ground hardens up after the big rain we've had and they're able to dig the line up to the house.

...and it's about time.

What's weird is I'm probably about the only person in the world who's gonna get a slower connection because of the switch. I'm promised 32Mbps on Charter, and I usually get that and then some. But with all the connection issues, the billing problems, and the general PITAs I usually have to deal with, it'll be worth it.

I'm oping for a 25/25 connection for now. I can easily upgrade to 50/50 or 100/100 later, but I can't think of many reasons why I'd need any more than what I'm getting. I might as well save a bit of cash and download all my files at "just" 3 meg a second. I'll lose my bragging points, but that's about it.

I used to be on 100Mbit/s cable in my old apartment and they told me they could transfer the service to my new one when I moved last October. The week I move in I call them to see what's going on and they told me they can't activate it due to a dispute with another cable company and my particular building. The annoying thing was that a few neighbours were on 100Mbit/s cable but they'd obviously set up before this issue. After some messing around I found out I could get VDSL, which I'd never actually heard of (the V, that is). To my surprise, it's been great...

Even if I can get the 100Mbit/s cable I don't think I'd bother now because the upload speed of this VDSL is almost twice what the cable was. :)

I am now officially on fiber!

Took almost 2 meg a second hit to my download speeds, but gained well over 2 and a half on uploads. I think that's a fairly decent tradeoff. This also marks the first time my upload speeds are faster than my downloads, which is...weird and odd.

Good luck. I don't even know when I'll be able to get fibre since I keep getting conflicting answers depending on who I ask.

Me to Chorus: Can you connect fibre to my place?
Chorus: Yup, but you need to order through an ISP.
Me to Orcon: Please install fibre.
Orcon: We don't have equipment in your area so can't connect you.
Me to Telecom: Please install fibre.
Telecom: You need to talk to Chorus.
Me to Chorus: Telecom is saying to talk to you.
Chorus: We can't connect you.
Me to Chorus: But you already said you can!
Chorus: *No response*
Me to Telecom: Chorus is now saying they can't connect me.
Telecom: They definitely can, let me send this onto someone that can help.

That was two weeks ago and nothing has happened since. Sigh...

Mine fluctuates from 20mbps to 70mbps (it's BT Infinity 2 so I think the max is 80mbps?), when I run Speedtest in Windows it's usually faster. Thank god for unlimited bandwidth!

Surprised

I am surprised that this thread popped up again. The poll closed some time ago.

Useable internet still seems to be off and on. This is as far as I got after more than 10 minutes the other day.

Best one I've recorded was back in January of this year. I think the peering points for my cable company have gotten a little busier since then.

One from this evening is a bit slower:

Well, here's mine. The upload speed could be a little better, but otherwise I'm pretty happy with my connection :)

At work. Comcast just dropped off a new modem the other day and we tweaked our Airport Extremes. Looking pretty good, I think!

Least you have fibre my place is stuck 4km away from the exchange on an ADSL 1 connection and downloads at 2mbps

Although we might be able to pay chorus as a community to give us a new cabinet with fibre

Nope again.

I have an "OK" ADSL2 connection. You might want to look into "RBI" coverage as it's supposed to provide faster speeds to rural users.

Not paying for the ridiculous 90 a month for 15 gig(for marginally faster speeds). I pay Telecom 100 for 150 gig and a phone line it would be cheaper with naked broadband though.

As I said this community has contacted the Auckland council and I have contacted Chorus, they will tell me the approximate pricing of installing and purchasing an ADSL2+/VDSL/Fibre cabinet will be. The only problem with this is we would be paying for everything, cabinet, trenching, new wiring, installation of wiring, plan of where the cabinet would go and how much it would cost(the plan is 5000).

But when Auckland council contacts me back I'll bw asking for funding for it all.
