They fixed scrolling in iOS 10, so that alone is worth the price of admission.

I updated OTA and have no issues whatsoever with my iPhone 5. Though, I do hate the fact that pre-TouchID devices have to double tap home to unlock. Who thought that was a good idea?! They could at least have given us the option to use the old Slide to Unlock.

Seems like various people have said it's fairly good on iOS 10. An example:
Thats just his opinion. There will always be people who claim slow devices are fast enough.Plenty like me feel iOS 8.4.1 is still faster than iOS 10 as a particular video also proves

So I just updated my iPhone 5 as I want watchOS 3 and despise some people saying the performance is on par with iOS 9, I feel it feels way too slow, some apps like Safari will not even load. There's an overall sluggishness across the board, from animations, opening and closing apps, switching and loading.

Anybody else experiencing similar results? Can I still downgrade to iOS 9?

If safari won't even load, that's a telltale sign something is very very wrong. IOS 10 works about the same as 9 on iPhone 5, which is quite surprising given its a four year old device. It seems to be a problem with your installation. Do try a restore.

Look here to see how 10 should work on i5. Mine does.

5c here and no glaring issues. Granted there's some delay but nothing that you wouldn't expect for a device of its age. I like it so far

Apple's planned obsolescence at its finest. Some will stay in denial though. This is why I like Nexus update policy more than iPhone

Both of my daughters are running iOS 9.3.5 on iPhone 5 devices with zero issues. Apple supports phones far longer than any Android OEM.

helped upgrade my partner's iphone 5 OTA something happened which i thought was unusual and resulted in quite a bit of slow down.

her hotmail account required her password again and after entering it seemed all her emails had gone. the slowdown then occurred as it was redownloading over a decade of emails. mail app unusable and had to temporarily switch to 1 month sync only rather than no limit (latter is better for nostalgia searches!)

so one possible fringe case cause of slowdown on iphone 5 is due to redownloading emails, which could take several hours or days depending!

When you do this, how do you get your photos back on the phone? Or do you just back your photos up to an external hard drive / or computer?
Google Drive is my choice over iCloud. It's faster, requires fewer steps, it's free and is part of Google's excellent open, cross platform Ecosystem. Easily accessable from PC or Mac, Android or iOS smartphones and tablets, the apps provided for iOS and Android are very well done.
