I was more excited for iOS to be discussed during WWDC than any previous iOS. There has been so much hype about "iPhone 8" and what could be of it, that I thought for sure we'd be blown away with Apple FINALLY modernizing the OS. I get it, it works, but each passing year iOS lags further and further behind Android's feature list.

After watching the keynote and seeing what Apple has up its sleeves for iOS 11, I'm a bit skeptical that the iPhone 8 (or whatever they'll call it this fall) will live up to the hype that people are making it out to be. For three years now, Apple has delivered consistently unremarkable updates to iPhone. If this year's iOS preview is any indication of what's coming, I think we're all in for a disappointing September\October.

I hope I'm wrong.

Apple doesn't seem to give away all it's "secrets" at WWDC. I'm sure there is plenty more to come at the reveal, however, what you're personal take on it, is to be determined.

I can't think of any releases in the past which have been even a small surprise when it comes to final release. If Apple were to do anything even remotely "big" it would negate the whole purpose of 4 months of developer releases so developers could ready their apps.

When I read how disappointed someone is with iOS updates or new releases, I have to wonder what exactly do you want your phone to do that it currently is unable to do? My preference is in the hardware. No bezel, wireless charging and oled screen is what I am waiting for.

I absolutely agree with every request you have for the hardware. Does that mean you give Apple a pass on software because they're working on hardware? Look at a jailbreak forum, and you'll see what people want Apple to do with the iOS.

I feel like I have a child's toy when I have a 6 inch screen on my phone, but I'm only "allowed" to have 4 icons across, and 6 icons down. Can you imagine if Apple enforced the same proportionate requirements of what you can have on your desktop? That's my biggest gripe with iPhone.

Pick up an Android, go into Settings, and check out everything you can customize in there. Check out the features it has that nobody thinks is important, but when you see the list of things you can do, you'll say wait a second, why doesn't Apple do this?

But hey, kudos to Apple to let me send fireworks with my iMessage, or integrating my Starbucks App into iMessage so I can send someone a Starbucks card through iMessage instead of email. I'm sure glad Apple is focusing on what's important.... changing to "signal dots" instead of signal bars... oh wait, guess that didn't work out too well, iOS 11 bringing back signal bars... wonder how many thousands of developer hours that took to come up with and now undo.

I feel like every iOS is a repetition of the last... everyone posts these big wish lists and Apple ignores it. You'd think at the very least, they'd let me put a weather widget on my home screen, or maybe let me put the icons where I want them? It's just getting old... real old. And I'm bored. When my desktop screen gets boring, I can change the wallpaper and re-arrange icons. When my living room gets tired, I can shuffle the furniture in an arrangement that's new and different. In an Apple world, none of this is possible.

Just switch then.

Do you take that approach to everything in life? If you're unhappy with politics in the country, do you move to another country, or try to push for change (vote)? If you're dissatisfied with your job, do you just quit, or do you go to your boss and ask for more challenge\change? If you check into a hotel and the room doesn't have something you want in it, do you just leave the hotel, or do you talk to the front desk?

The "if you don't like it, go away" argument is tired and silly. Get some new material. If you don't hold the makers of the products you buy to a standard, what incentive do they have to improve on a product? Competition drives the market, but consumers ultimately have to have expectations, or the competition will fill the customers' wants.

But thanks for your utterly amazing response. It contributed so so much.

Again the Android syndrome. Customizing is the buzz word here and it seems it won't fade away.Dudes, go and get a shining S8 and you'll be so glad. It's like having a very very boring wife and keep staying married to her year after year 'for the kids sake' when they're in their 20's. You love her, then accept her for what she is. Do you really believe cutomizing is all there is to a phone? One should praise Apple for not complying to all those whistles and bells demands that are skins, themes, rows, lanes, one million alert sounds and all. Much less problems and more fluidity. What should be discussed here is the important fact that Apple could slow downs Qualcomm modems used in iPhone 8 pin order to have the same performances of Intel modems. That is more important to me than customizing a row of icons. Gee, I can get carried away sometimes. My French blood I guess.

The problem is, that you aren't asking your boss for a change. You are complaining to strangers on the internet! since when does Apple listen to people complaining on a forum? You are not getting to apple with this. And I hardly believe, that so many people really care about your problem of not being able to fit more icons.

Also: if your are looking for a big software feature. That wasn't shown at wwdc, but was a headline feature of a new iPhone, I suggest you hold down your home button for a second.

With loads of customizations comes instability. Look at wake locks and how hard google has tried to tackle that alone and you start to see why apple does things the way they do. If you want custom go android. I want stable.

Seems to me there is a bit about iOS 11 to be "excited" for, starting with; new picture formats, customization in control center, updates in Siri etc, machine learning apis, etc. all of the past wwdcs have had similar themes. Maybe these don't pique your interest, but these updates are interesting to me.

I actually agree with OP that Apple needs to get their S... together with iOS although I think so for different reason.

When people make this argument I also see people saying the same **** arguments that they added plenty and although true they forget that all the new features they add are almost always only available for the US to begin with or at best a few major languges and thats it.

How many years ago did Apple add smart keyboard? How many years ago did Apple add Siri? How many years ago did Apple add Apple pay?

Well people forget that most the world don't have access to all these fancy features and year after year go by and Apple don't give a **** about adding the rest of the world to all these features.

Sure I can understand that the major languages gets added first. But for Christ sake. Get on with it Apple and finish your **** and don't just forget about it like now we are done.

It gets really boring only being able to ask Siri how the weather will be. We can maybe do 10% with Siri compared to what you can.

I still have a hard time grasping that we are now iOS 11 and not a single Scandinavian country has been added to Smart keyboard. I mean wtf. Scandinavia has been a pro Apple/iPhone from the beginning but iPhones are starting to look like an empty shell for Scandinavians when comparing with the features available on iPhones in the US or UK or Germany etc...

You americans, UK's and the rest of major languges needs to remember that what we can do with our iPhones is just a shadow of what you can do because Apple seems to have forgotten that the many small countries make a big market too.

Greatest/best phone we ever created only applies to You. The rest of us get the same **** Everytime as nothing is ever available for us and most likely never will be as Apple stop working on that big feature once the major countries has been added.

We don't know that for a fact, do we? :) Maybe Apple has a whole team hired, just to sift through hundreds of forums and make a list of top complaints. They won't tell you that they do this, but it's possible that they do.

The people who complain about the same thing year after year, certainly do not think Apple listens to them, online or through the feedback tool.

The "I hate/don't like iOS, android is better cause you can do this...but I don't want to switch to android" is pretty tiring and silly as well. iOS and android are your choices, and if you're unhappy with one why would you continue using it.

So I post a legitimate concern shared by many (based on polls and the numbers shown to have switched over the years), and you take the legitimacy from my post. Wow. No wonder why Apple doesn't progress.

They're interesting, but not earth shattering. Pick up a Pixel or SGS 8 and go into settings and see what's available to do, and you'll see what I mean. When you go back to iOS, it's like huh. I stick with Apple because of the ecosystem, but if I were to break out of the ecosystem on even 1 of my devices, the whole product line would lose it's appeal. That's the one thing Apple has gotten right.

You can defend their boring updates, and their lack of adaptation to consumer trends, but the issues are real. Apple faces a TINY market share in a space they once had a HUGE marketshare. You can blab on about the number one selling phone, but the reality is Apple makes up a tiny piece of the iOS marketshare on earth, and its getting smaller by the day. Why? Because when you give consumers options (be it hardware, or even within the OS on their phone) they will always gravitate toward the product that gives them customization. It baffles me that people would rather take the stance of wanting someone else to decide their choices in life for them rather than be able to make them for themselves. But hey, that's the way politics has gone in this country for the last 10 years, why not phones too?

Really? I think you're talking to the wrong people. Being able to customize your icon layout on the screen doesn't create instability. I know plenty of people with high-end Android devices and none of their devices are unstable. They offer features like quick charge, wireless charging, edge to edge display, headphone jacks, facial recognition, better screen, and the list goes on. Pixel has some great high-end features as well.

The problem with your argument is it's dated. It's like those who trash PC for being unstable. Windows had some bad releases, and some of the lower end hardware didn't work well in the past with fragmented OS versions. But now if you buy a mid to high end PC with Windows 10, it's a fantastic combination. The same is to be said about Android\hardware. Apple users have been so brainwashed to think that just because Apple was better 10 years ago, that Microsoft and Google and hardware manufacturers have just been sitting on their hands doing nothing. Quite the opposite, it seems that's what they've been doing at Apple. Botched iOS and OS X releases galore the last 5 years. Hardware issues (and things that cause issues) all over the place.

But then again there's a reason why people call us "Apple sheep" because of threads like this where a portion of the Mac fanbase thinks Apple can do no wrong, and uses 10 year old comparisons as to why Apple is better to defend a position without real basis. It's responses where people fail to deliver educated responses and just beat the "stability" drum. Yeah, Android devices aren't just randomly crashing. And tell those affected by the iPhone 6 battery defect that Apple is amazing. And tell those who applied the update last year which killed cellular service on their Verizon phone that Apple is amazing. And blame people for holding their iPhone 4 wrong for their reception issues. Tell that to me who had to buy $300 of bluetooth headphones when I had perfectly good, industry-standard wired headphones that couldn't be used with my $1000 phone. Tell that to those like me who can't plug a 2 month old iPhone into Apple's 8 month old laptop without buying an extra cable. You seem to not remember the issues that Apple has had over the years.

Really? Apple doesn't progress because a member has a different view than you? I also would like to know how many people share your "concern"? I don't "share" your "concern" and I buy what I want and put my money where my mouth is.

Thankfully there is Apple and IOS. After playing with a sg8 I was happy to get back to "boring" iPhone 7. But using your definition of "earth shattering", that hasn't happened since iOS 1.

Your talk about marketshare is the only vestiage of a time a long time ago. Today Apple takes 80% plus of the profits, marketshare is irrelevant. Given how iPhones fly off the shelves at a launch and revenue in general it doesn't seem like Apple is hurting for customers.

At any rate you and I should be happy there is competition. I personally can't wait for iOS 11 on the next rumored iPhone. Exciting times for Apple.

First off, you're talking to me about a million different things when I simply talked about software customization, not hardware. I don't care about hardware, the phone and tablets are fantastic in my mind and Apple will continue to add to them.

Second, I really don't feel like addressing your huge list of issues here with iOS. Arranging your icons in a different manner is customization but is simply the tiniest tip of the ice berg of what people want. Customization at the deeper level is going to sacrifice stability, it always does to some degree, a degree which I am happy Apple has not considered.

My main point after your ramblings above is .. why in the world are you still with Apple if you detest their decisions so much? This site is FILLED with people who ranted and raved over the iOS update issues (and I totally understand why they would, I personally did not have any issues with it). Show me a company which has never had a misstep or total idiotic moment, they don't exist! These companies are run by flawed (in many ways, just like you and I) people! People hate admitting when they're wrong, it doesn't matter what side of the fence you're on. The point is .. use what best suits you and stop moaning about it. If you "had" to buy bluetooth headphones I feel deeply sorry for you as it seems you couldn't manage to insert the wired headphones into the adapter they provided.

TL;DR: The sky is on fire, anyone who "supports" apple is a sheep and android is your master because of some reason I still yet to understand. Everyone who uses an Apple product obviously cannot see the better side of anything and only uses Apple out of blind obedience blah blah blah.

Switch to whatever make you happy and stop crying about it.

BTW, you're talking to a guy who has had more phones than he can count from Android (Nexus to high end whatever else). You know though, I still just have no clue what I actually "need" and only serve master Apple out of blind obedience.

Well then you're on a completely different planet from everyone else, as iOS 11 blew away my expectations with literally hundreds of fixes/changes that have been desired for years. It doesn't get much better than this for an iOS release.

Don't waste your time. They are enraged with Apple right now and have the grass is greener mentality (look at the ramblings above).

I wholeheartedly recommend the switch to whatever they feel is better to relieve that anxiety.

Agreed. Did they watch a different presentation? I was really impressed. Finally a file browser. Multitasking improved. If all you want is customization for coloring and stuff, you are never going to get that with Apple. Look at the Mac. You can't change the themes or colors to near the degree you can with Windows and Linux.

I used to root and jailbreak. I have had so many Android phones, etc. Now that I am needing my stuff to just work the same way every day and I have plenty to do, I don't want/need to change colors/icons/etc. If you do, Apple will never be for you. They don't want to deal with that level of customization in any of their operating systems. Not iOS, macOS, tvOS, etc.

You are not being very specific. I have both a Pixel and GS8+ on my desk, I don't see what customizations you're so concerned about? I find ARKit, the iPad improvements, and apps on my iPhone 7+ to be leaps and bounds better than anything on my Android phones. I spend most of the time inside apps, so having a 4 by X grid to not be an issue. I use spotlight get to most apps, find it far more efficient. What are you, SPECIFICALLY, hoping they add/change?
