iOS 11 Beta 5: Changes, Bug Fixes, Enhancements, etc.

Compatibility
  • iPhone 5s and later

New Features
  • Added keyboard shortcuts in the Files App
  • Messages in iCloud temporarily removed, returning in a future iOS 11 update
  • Lines removed from Camera icon
  • New splash page for Photos detailing Portrait mode.
  • Screen recording status bar is now red instead of blue
  • In Control Center there is a little flashing icon on the top right of the play control that opens expands directly to the AirPlay menu
  • App Store Updates tab: "All your apps are up to date"
  • Darker Settings and Camera icons
  • New screens in Setup Assistant on iPad featuring the new Dock and App Switcher behaviors
  • New sound when initiating a FaceTime call
  • New “drag and drop photo/video” in iMessage. You’re about to drag a photo/video from your library while in Messages app into the chat area and it will send
  • iPad Pro - while swiping up from bottom it brings up Dock, if you swipe up higher it invokes the App Switcher
  • Siri:
    • New voices for both genders of Brazilian Portuguese, Canadian French, Dutch, and Swedish. Added new female voices for English and Mexican Spanish, and upgraded the voice for both genders of Japanese and Chinese.
    • Added support for translation requests from English US to Chinese, Spanish, German,
      French, and Italian.
Bug Fixes
  • Text shortcuts/replacements work in third-party keyboards
  • Stock widget now shows full list once you click on Show More
  • Same as above for Favorites (which sometimes worked, sometimes didn't)
  • Connecting to a cellular network after restarting or powering on a device now works correctly.
  • System should no longer take up the remaining free space, causing the device to run out of space.
  • The possibility to use the watch for controlling the music app on the iPhone, works again

Bugs
  • (recurring from Beta 4) Open App A, then close & open another app - App A's icon will briefly flash white
  • screen flicked when drop down Notification Center.
  • Graphical glitch while closing apps in the App Switcher quickly (iPhone 6s and iPhone 7).
  • Screen dims for 3-4 seconds, then turns off when locking the device
  • Done button mispositioning after doing screenshot direct edit still happens but only sometimes.
  • Music still shuffles automatically...no way to play album/playlist songs in order.
  • Wallpaper stills perspective although turned-off when set.
  • (Recurring from Beta 1) Notifications and Banners dont happen for mails received in favorited folders and sub folders other than Inbox.
  • (Recurring) Calculator operator buttons lag. e.g. quickly tap 1 + 2 + 3. It will come out as 1 + 23 because the + is still disabled after its first tap.
  • Try to choose a song as alarm ringtone, the song cannot be previewed (just like playing that song in music app). Not sure if using song as ringtone still work in iOS 11.

Was half tempted to install the dev beta/public. What would you recommend?For my new iPad Pro, needs to be stable enough but don't mind minor bugs.

If you have any doubt, don't install it. No-one has tried the beta that just dropped and it may have critical bugs. This isn't "it's a beta" snark or anything. Serious answer. If you have a shred of doubt, don't do it.

edit: I should clarify that this is my opinion and I'm not under the impression it's a universally correct answer (or that there even is one)

Last beta was stable enough for both my iPhone and iPad Pro 9.7”. Just some minor bugs that you’d expect with any beta release. Battery life was definitely worse than iOS 10 if that’s an issue for you though. I would hope todays build will be even better.

Looks like "The “Messages in iCloud” feature has been removed in iOS 11 beta 5 and will ship in a future software update to iOS 11. Users can continue to receive and store messages on each device, and they can continue to backup and restore messages using iCloud Backup."

Best bet is to stick with 10.3.3 until enough people have run this for at least a few days at least to find most of the potential showstopper bugs. There are a number of apps that don't play nice with 11 so far, so it's better to find out through someone else's misfortune than your own. ;)

I was back on beta 1 on my iPhone, but was wondering if these later betas are closer to their final release.

Yeah that's stopping me right now :/ Had that issue on my 7 Plus back on Beta 1.
 
This preparing update bug on my Air 2 is driving me crazy. Keeps getting stuck, having to reboot, then it gets stuck again.
