What a rubbish move by apple regarding the 6th gen iPod touch. They should have upgraded it a year ago. People who bought the 6th gen a week ago get literally no support. All security support goes by September for them.
Yeah, something about them updating the iPod Touch a week before WWDC felt off to me and I suspected A8/1 GB support was being dropped. It's rubbish that they didn't upgrade the Touch sooner considering the newest parts they put into the 2019 iPod Touch are from 2016...

I wasn’t sure what way it was going to go - in 2013 they dropped the iPod touch 4 just before wwdc and it missed iOS 7. However, they also dropped the touch 5 just before wwdc in 2015 and it still got iOS 9, so I wasn’t too certain.

But yes a kick in the guts for iPod buyers, they could have easily spec bumped it ages ago.

Yes. I'm an iPod touch 6th gen owner and as soon as I saw the 7 it put me off the iPod with how Apple is treating it now. When the 6 came out it was basically a mini iPhone 6, the 7 is much more underspecced compared to the corresponding (or other recent) iPhones.

I don't remember Apple selling a "new" device and dropping support in such a short space of time.

They did the same with the iPod touch 4 back in 2013 - was dropped in May and then wwdc dropped software support. But I feel that was a bit different - the touch 4 was the budget model, sold alongside the touch 5, where as the touch 6 was their flagship iPod.

Bad move Apple.

Yes, but as you said in this scenario it's even worse, it's not even a week later and the "flagship" iPod is suddenly rendered obsolete. IMO they should've at least updated it earlier.

It should have come with 2GB to begin with - as should the iPhone 6 should have. Or yes it should have been spec bumped in late 2017 or early 2018.

Looks like RAM is a bigger factor than the processor. A9 devices should make it to at least iOS 15.

Technically the A8/1GB RAM still exists in the HomePod but it doesn’t need to run an entire smartphone.

Now developers can always assume there will be at least 2GB RAM in all devices they code for.

2GB RAM devices:
iPad Air 2
iPad 5
iPad 6
iPad Mini 4
iPad Pro 9.7”
iPhone 6S
iPhone 6S Plus
iPhone SE
iPhone 7
iPhone 8
iPod touch 7
Apple TV 4th Gen

3GB RAM devices:
iPhone 7 Plus
iPhone 8 Plus
iPhone X
iPhone XR
iPad Air 3
iPad Mini 5
Apple TV 4K

4GB RAM devices:
iPhone XS
iPhone XS Max
iPad Pro 12.9” 1st Gen, 2nd Gen, 3rd Gen
iPad Pro 10.5”
iPad Pro 11”

Here's my speculation for iOS 13.

Safe: iPad Air 2, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPad mini 4, iPhone SE, and any later devices. These have 2 GB or more of RAM.

Cut: iPhone 5s, iPad Air, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad mini 3, iPod Touch 6. These have 1 GB of RAM.

We'll find out for sure soon enough.
As for now Only iPhone 7 or A10 processor and above is 100% Safe. Ive been seeing lots of stutters on my hundred of co workers 6s as their phone randomly force close on certain apps like youtube, facebook and some gaming in witch is not a good thing if the 4 years old device is getting the iOS 13 or not. Even if the 5S up to the 6S is not supporting iOS 13, then its fine for majority. Nobody needs to update their software that much. A used or new iPhone 7 is much better choice than other phones that lacks hevc decoding and encoding, and lacks quad core

My SE is fine. Both my parents and two siblings are also fine with iPhone SE's. Devices with the above issues are more than likely devices with performance throttling enabled or devices that need a fresh iOS install.

Apple has already announced what devices are getting iOS 13. 6s/SE (A9) and newer are getting it on the iPhone side and and the Air 2/Mini 4 (A8/A8x, but with 2 GB or RAM) are getting it on the iPad side. All devices with 1 GB of RAM are being dropped.

Edit: Also, as an aside it's looking like iOS 13 may be a winner as with the App optimizations that were mentioned in the keynote most are reporting that their devices feel faster, and that's only with the first beta.

I suppose the next cutoff will be non-Bionic chips. A9 and A10 are similar in power plus iPad Pro A9X 12.9” has 4GB ram.

Probably be 2-3 years before another cutoff, plus the 7G iPod touch was just launched with A10, I can see a solid few years of A9/A10 support.
9.7" iPad Pro has A9X and only 2 GB RAM.

I would expect A9 to be ditched before A10. As mentioned, A9 does not include HEVC encode, whereas A10 does.

As always battery will suffer again on the weakest (specs) supported device, i hope that iOS 13 future betas will resolve the battery drain issues especially on A9.

Now look back at my vote, I got the cutoff list perfectly right this year around on iOS devices. Pretty cool.

Not so much if they change their battery before December 2018. If a brand new battery iPhone 6s suffers on battery life, then ok.

iTunes will be supported until September 2021.
Which iTunes version and where do you get this info?
First, because Apple has never dropped more than one major series of iPhones at a time.
Well, at this point we all see what was happening. They did DROP two generations at the same time.
So much for environment concern.
No tech giant cares about environment as soon as they can earn big cash.
It should have come with 2GB to begin with - as should the iPhone 6 should have. Or yes it should have been spec bumped in late 2017 or early 2018.
Not if the RAM is part of their SoC. They may simply don’t want to put A9 on an iPod.

Not sure how you voted, but I see that you said this:
Even at this point, I still believe Apple will cut A7 and A8, probably A9 devices altogether. HomePod and iPod is different, and Apple can cut support of only iPhone and iPad devices. The bottom line is, Apple can theoretically cut any device they see fit, with no reasonable pattern at all.
They didn't cut A9 obviously, but they didn't completely cut A8 either.

They cut A7 as well as 1 GB A8, but kept 2 GB A8.

I forgot the exact reason either, and what I post did not carry any information on why I made that vote, but I did not mention A8X either. They are the 2GB A8.

Given the thermal and battery size, putting A8X is kinda difficult without major engineering design change.
A8 is made with 2 GB of RAM as well - that is what is in the Mini 4 and Apple TV 4. I'm pretty sure they meant that chip and not the A8x. Nonetheless, Apple did what they did. They knew the 6 was going to sell like hot cakes just based on it having a larger screen than what was previously available and so they were conservative with the other spec upgrades so the 6s could be a bigger performance upgrade the following year.

Well, I can’t find the source at Apple but Wikipedia states that macOS Mojave’s extended support ends in September 2021 and iTunes, in August 2022 even. Since Mojave is the last macOS with iTunes, I’m guessing that the iTunes support won’t mean all that much. Probably that Apple will update iTunes to be able to sync with newer iOS versions until September 2022 when iOS 16 (or whatever it will be called) is released.

The iPad mini 4 doesn't have an A8X. It has an A8 (non X) with 2GB of ram. They could have easily used this and under-clocked it.

I stand by my statement.

The iPhone 6 should never have had 1GB of ram, and neither should the iPod touch 6th gen. Or they should have upgraded the 6th gen back in 2017 to an A10 with 2GB of ram. Or an A9 with 2GB of ram. Or anything.

I agree that iPhone 6 should’ve had 2GB of RAM. I remember when it was released in 2014 and iFixit plucked it apart, and they reported 1GB of RAM. I was genuinely surprised, I did expect 2GB at that point. I mean they went from 128MB (1st gen) > 128MB (2nd gen) > 256MB (3rd gen) > 512MB (4th gen) > 512MB (4S) > 1GB (5) > 1GB (5S) > 1GB (6) > 2GB (6S) > 2GB (7) > 3GB (X) > 4GB (XS). So that 1GB from 2012-2014 was the only time they kept the same amount of RAM for three consecutive years.

Yes. But Apple made that decision anyway. 1GB for iPhone 6 series. A “forever problematic iPhone” according to one YouTuber.

I give up arguing as words have escaped me.
