More than likely, they're making protocol changes to (hopefully) make it more reliable or to work around other existing issues, and those changes are simply not (yet) backward-compatible.

If you're referring to universal control, this has been the case with most betas which required all the devices to be on the same build. They may be testing some slight changes in how universal control functions.
