exactly. people will have nightmares and lose money with no way to get it back and will go into apple stores and expect it all to get fixed. connecting to your home network when you install that new 'router helper' app that opens your network and key captures all your passwords will be nice too. so much freedom! but at least developers can sell more badly debugged games to people.

So, any app can be an app store? This means that any low-skilled coder can cut and paste the example app store app, change a few lines and the JPG artwork files, and build an app store. This means there will be tens of thousands of app stores in Europe. Heck, I might try making one just to see if I can make one. Lots of people will do the same. Most app stores will be pointless and have maybe a half-dozen example apps in them.

This is a genus move on Appler's part. They give the EU commission what it asks for while making it useless. If Apple had allowed only 2 or 4 app stores then Apple would have faced some competition but by allowing many thousands of app stores they make the entire idea pointlessly useless. Who now would invest money in an app store knowing that any kid could compete in that space?

They have lowered the cost and technical knowledge required for building an app store to about zero.

Just do it everywhere, Apple. Will be easier to support than different rules in different regions/countries.
They're probably looking to turn this into as much of a dumpster fire as possible. It is Apple after all.

I wonder if there will be a way for me to have Apple think I am in the EU? (I am in the USA) I would love to be able to use firefox as it should be, not a watered down IOS version.

Why will you have to install all these app stores?

Because Meta, e.g., will pull its apps out of the App Store and only offer them through its own store. And of course those apps will be just jam-packed with fun, invasive tracking features that Apple never allowed.

I love how everyone complaining that alternative app sources will compromise the integrity of the platform is probably on a Mac where you can install whatever you want.
that's a ridiculous statement. a modern phone carries more info, and makes it more easily available than ANY home system. It's not apples to apples. People WILL lose money, be compromised, and be spied on to a degree that was not possible before. it's not a joke. It's not funny and it's silly to equate the platforms. Less tech savvy will be hit the hardest with recurring fees and scam apps. Spyware will proliferate and people's phones will be compromised. it's going to be a mess for many people. Who could just buy an android and enjoy that mess.
