How to install beta via OTA?
  1. Enable Beta Updates (Settings>General>Software Updates>Beta Updates)
  2. Check and sign into the right Apple ID to access beta
  3. Select which beta you would like to receive (Public/Developer)
  4. Hit "Back" and pull down to refresh
  5. Do an encrypted backup or iCloud backup before installing the beta from release build
  6. Install the beta
If you no longer wish to receive beta updates:
  1. Turn off the Beta Updates (you can also sign out of your Apple ID to unlink your developer account)
  2. Wait for the next public release or follow the guide below to install the IPSW release build
Troubleshoot: Sometimes, the beta update will not show so you may need to enable/disable Airplane Mode or restart your device before rechecking for update.

How to install beta via IPSW on Mac?
  1. You will need to install either Xcode beta or MobileDevice.pkg which can be extracted from the Xcode beta (tap with two finger or right click to Show Package Content>Contents>Resources>Packages>MobileDevice.pkg - this will work on older Macs that do not support the latest macOS or Xcode beta)
  2. Do an encrypted backup in Finder in case you need to restore your device
  3. Hold down Option + Check for Update and select the appropriate IPSW file for your device (whether you're updating to a newer/beta firmware, reinstalling the same firmware or downgrading to previous firmware while retaining all your data) downloaded from Apple using your free developer account. Note: You must have an active internet connection as it will check the IPSW signing status before it will proceed with the update.
  4. Enter your iPhone passcode once prompted to proceed.
Notes/Tips:
  • Always keep a backup in case you need to restore your data if you restore your device
  • It may be better to close all apps before installing the updates and/or turn off your device for about a minute or restart a few minutes after your device is updated
  • You can also manually select the IPSW if you are restoring your device using Option + Restore iPhone. Restore will wipe all your personal data which you will need to restore your backup either using iCloud backup or Finder/iTunes backup
  • You do not need to install the MobileDevice.pkg from each Xcode beta version unless Finder does not recognize the new iOS beta
  • There is no MobileDevice.pkg equivalent to iTunes for PC which would require a new iTunes to support new/beta iOS
  • If you receive a new iPhone, you can connect to Mac to update or restore your device to the latest iOS before setting up your device.
  • You can also use the Recovery Mode/DFU to update or restore your device by manually selecting IPSW

Interesting choice to name it 17.7, but then again, there might be many "under the hood" changes that qualifies it to be a 17.7 version instead of a 17.6.2

Either way its expected that an update for iOS 15, 16 and 17 is being released when iOS 18 are being rolled out.
Will be interesting to see when Apple drops support for iOS 17.

I just upgraded a spare iPhone 12 Pro 128GB in white given to me by a colleague, because she is not using it anymore. Its battery health is still(!!) at 90%, although it was in heavy daily use in Office 365 work environment since October 2020!

Upgrade to 17.7 RC went smooth and it didn't get as hot as my main iPhone 12 Pro did upgrading to 17.6.1 (first build). Now i will watch the battery drain on the white one and will comment back, when i have further data.

BTW: Anyone else upgraded to 17.7 RC?

Battery on the secondary 12 Pro seems fine: After >10 hours of standby it only lost 2%! 👍

Now updating my main driver, the pacific blue 12 Pro, to 17.7 RC...

[edit] Update went also fine and the phone was not as hot as usual directly after the update!

Not even worth a news flash, is iOS 17.7 already doomed?
No, the Macrumors staff don’t care about these things as long as they can churn out more important news from the keynote.
Apple‘s recent 13 bn Euro tax fine… Same. Who cares, as long as the new iphone glass is 50 percent more scratch resistant.

correction: they did add this when everyone already knew about it.

17.7 RC absolutely suitable for daily driver on my main phone.

Meanwhile i also updated the SE 2 to 17.7 RC. Also a very smooth experience - i absolutely recommend! 👍

If you are not on the bleeding edge, fast train or an early adopter get it while it's signed... ;)

I know most of the time the RC version and the final version come out with the same build number, but I'm waiting for the final version.

Updated my 13PM and to me it feels the same as 17.6.1, maybe slightly smoother but that could be placebo after fresh update.
Battery - woke up at 5:25am with 100% battery, it's almost 10pm and I'm down to 17% with 4h12m SOT so yeah.. overall iOS 17 is the worst iOS ever for me.

Edit: actually there's something different I noticed after updating - internet seems to be slower on wifi and LTE. My MacBook is connected to the same wifi and it loads up pages almost immediately while my iPhone needs like 5 or more seconds to load them. The same is happening in apps - I can scroll through twitter and it need several seconds to load pics or videos. Idk, I'll restart the phone before going to sleep and check it tomorrow.

Really sorry to read that. :(

On my end 17.7 RC "feels" and performs at least the same - if not better - as 17.6.1 (build 21G93, never had 21G101)

I don't use Safari, maybe that's the problem? \_(シ)_/

[edit] Just take a look at the battery usage:

2024-09-11 23.39.jpg

It is nearly 8 hours since i charged to 91% and it is still at 91%

Maybe BMS has been updated and it needs to calibrate like it has in the past?
I can imagine that algorithms for calculating battery life and time left are one of many things that’s constantly being improved.

Could be a bug to I guess

This is how I browse social media apps, safari, stream Spotify, movies, literally anything - by looking at blank apps that don’t load anything on mobile data. This is literally happening every few minutes. It’s funny because the same thing was happening with iOS 17.5 or 17.6. I don’t remember at this point (every update was breaking something for me) but I reported that to apple on 24 July and gave them literally 15 updates with logs every single time i lost connectivity.
On iOS 17.6.1 it was working fine.
I have to stop updating this phone and probably stop buying apple products if that’s how they work now when you update the system - they’re unreliable.
And yes I know most of the people don’t have any problems on iOS 17 but I had, literally since 17.0 DB8 till 17.7 lol

As you say, most don't seem to experience what you do and then its a good thing looking into what differs your setup from others.

Sure, you can have a stab at Apple, might be a case that your device is faulty or software issues where the remedy is a factory reset. But in some cases it might be settings, periperhals, softwarebugs (such as apps) installed software, management tools, connectivity issues and a whole pile of other things worth looking into. It might be a case that the solution isn't for Apple to update iOS but for you to find what's causing the issues on your device.
Or, work with Apple support trying to find what's causing the issue and when you find the solution, share it with others. Maybe theres more out there having the same issues.

A good start might be to start off with a vanilla factory restored device (standard settings) and then install the app that you know causes issues and see if you can reproduce the problem.

Running iOS 17.7 GM and it’s the most stable iOS so far as I guess you would expect for iOS 17 at the end of the cycle , wondered if anyone else felt the same ? And if anyone else actively avoiding iOS 18 because of the photos redesign among others ?

I really didn’t like the Photos redesign at the beginning - thought it was terrible. Funny thing is, with a few months of use I now don’t mind it. It was unnecessary but the core functionality is still there so fair enough.

I was going to keep my 13 mini on iOS 17 and have been jumping between 17 and 18 to test. The amazing thing is though, I don’t feel any performance penalty from iOS 18 - it feels just as smooth to me. Guess I’m moving ahead with the new version then.

any appreciable battery life difference youve observed on 13 mini between iOS 17 and 18?

Actually I couldn’t really say as I keep the mini quite charged due to my routine being around charges most of the day.

I wouldn’t say it’s a phenomenal improvement or anything but I never expect super battery from a mini.

As a light user, I’d guess I could still get a day. It would be a guess though.

Safest bet would be to wait a few weeks to install and hear back from the masses. I can report iOS 18 is really stable though especially for a #.0 release. No show stoppers I’ve seen in a few months of use.

Its going to be interesting to see if they launch 17.7 alongside 18.
I'm guessing that if the release notes is publicized at release and if CVE's are listed, then the 17.7, 16.7.11 and 15.8.4 will be released at the same time.
They might wait to to publish the release notes (has been done in the past) untill 17.7 and the others are released tomorrow.

MS are doing a good job supporting the new OS from day 1 when managing devices from Intune.
