Let’s hope the Neural Engine will take care of it. That would be everything after iPad 10.5 inch.

Hopefully that's the case. I'm hoping Apple puts out something like Samsung's live translation which is really incredible to use, but requires the S24.

I still have several of them. Biggest annoyance is a notification sticker visible at the top, but I can't swipe down. Sometimes I can swipe halfway down, and not see the whole thing. A few hours later it works fine. While swiping up always works.

But no, it was no surprise, which is why it should be no surprise that iOS 18 will bring more bugs than usual, if it is a big update.

It is stable for me now. Honestly I don't remember exactly what the bugs were, except that for a while in the beginning and old but big one came back to me: Couldn't answer an incoming phone call, about every 5-10 times.
I can see a case made that it might be best to wait until the .1 release of a new OS. You will probably miss the most impactful bugs that way.

Like what happens when you are composing a text and you double tap the space bar to insert a period, I wish when you start a sentence off with who, what, when where, how, can, if, will, etc. and you double tap the space bar it would insert a question mark. Doesn't seem that hard to do but maybe I'm wrong and there would be no demand for it.
That might be something that would come if they decide to continue to improve text suggestions with AI as they did in iOS 17.

Why would it be?

I imagine that the LLM they have running on a phone needs:

- Lots of RAM
- Bigger neural engine

i.e. a new chip.

And it'll be a good way for Apple to drive upgrades. 🤑

Even with that thought, it's likely to be mostly external base processing occurring in the cloud then localized on the iPhone. Also performance constrained on your ISP/Cell rate/latency. A15, A16, A17 Pro based phones all offer 16 bit neural engine.
iPhone 13/Mini = 4GB RAM
iPhone 13 Pro/max = 6GB RAM
iPhone 14/Plus/Pro/Max = all have 6 GB RAM
iPhone 15/Plus = 6GB RAM
iPhone 15 Pro/Max = 8GB RAM

If Apple offers AI that requires only the newest configuration of Ram/larger neural engine then I think they will get scary laughs instead of smiles. ;)

I’m running local AI on my raspberry pi 5, they have no excuse.

But will the m2 support it… that’s what worries me. I feel like they’re gonna make ai exclusive to new chips
I’m kind of doubting that. Siri has been so broken for so long that it would be a really bad look for Apple, if they restricted to brand new devices.

They don’t care. They ALWAYS restrict the new features to brand new devices if they require new hardware not found in previous models, or to the previous 1-2 iterations if no new hardware is required. They never go more than 2 iterations back with support for new features.

You are right, of course. But I am wishing and hoping that if they must limit it to newish hardware, they will be able to accomplish this on devices that have the neural engine. As I said in a different post, that would be at least the iPad after the 10.5 inch. That’s going back a reasonable amount.

Haha, I guess we'll see.

Apple like people buying new hardware though, so I suspect that there will be 'revolutionary' AI/ML stuff that runs locally only, on the latest models - just like the new Samsungs. So at least lots of video and photo editing and (likely) a personal assistant (will it still be called Siri, given that Siri tends to be the punchline to a joke) that is lightning fast.

Agree with you about the LLM being trained on the cloud and then 'miniaturised' for the iPhone i.e. just like the smallest google gemini model that's come out.

Potentially I'll never know because ios18 won't fit on my iPhone SE 3rd generation, or the upgrade will not "be" for my iPhone, etc....

Whenever we need a good laugh, we just ask Siri a question. The answer is always laugh-worthy!

One time I asked Siri who the Speaker of the House was, and the answer was the status of the speakers in my house (which, interestingly, I don't have any Apple speakers or homekit-capable ones). She's very entertaining.
You should have used the lersons full title ( depending on if the gueston was for the us or the uk) Eho is the speaker of the hose of representatives/ who is is the speaker of the house of commons. A computers answer is never better than it's inputs, be spesific

I’m hoping for a new interface. iOS looks incredibly boring and the app icons are still as flat and uninspiring as 10 years ago. With all that power under the hood I want it be much more vibrating.
Speak for your self the boring icons ar at least easy to see for people like me with slight vision impairment, way better than wizz bang 3d icsns that use half thecaria on shados and or stacking 5 objects behind eachother
