It wouldn't surprise me though..... It feels like this long delay was sparked by something. Perhaps something wasn't ready even for testing stages and they had to push it back.
Yep, something doesn’t seem right. I had my suspicions on 18.4 before Gurman said anything because this just seems odd. We haven’t had any new features since what like thanksgiving?

Even funnier if they drop 18.4 to the public and nothing is new except new except the Visual Intelligence control center toggle.
That’s not likely to happen. 18.4 will likely at the very least add new Default App options in Settings, Apple already said those would come spring of this year, so likely in 18.4. I’m sure there will potentially be other non-Apple Intelligence features as well. And I’m sure they could release some of the Siri improvements. It’s not like it all has to release at once. Perhaps on-screen awareness will come in 18.4, and some of the other stuff will come in 18.5 or vice versa. Or it will all come in 18.4. We really have no reason to think these things won’t come in 18.4 other than Mark Gurman’s assertions, which have been repeatedly wrong so far about 18.4…

I was joking, but my expectations were a lot lower than most people in here a few weeks ago, and Apple didn’t even meet those expectations. So I continue to keep them low and keep lowering the bar even more. I think it’s important to be optimistic in life, but being overly optimistic will just lead to continuous disappointment.

It’s not unheard of to have a gap between betas like this. If we would have started with betas for 18.4 right after 18.3, it could have been like a 9-10 beta cycle, which I don’t think Apple has ever run. And a lack of big changes is probably actually a decent argument for more features coming in 18.4. They’ve likely been spending this time working more heavily on these new features, and they may be ready for testing now in 18.4. We don’t know for sure, but to me, that would make sense of why 18.3 was so sparse on features, and the gap between.

As someone in the software world, i really dont think "valuable beta testing time" is really a thing. The time it would take to identify a bug, isolate and recreate it, fix it, test the fix and push to the build would be so long that its almost sure to not happen in the next few weeks.

All Apple is looking for with developer betas is if APIs work as expected, and maybe minor things users like us report on. Public betas might have more of the latter, but these betas are meant for testing apps on real hardware with real services, latency, etc.

They probably have the API firmed up for. the new apple intelligence features, so they probably wont make any changes in the beta cycle to any of that.
I wish I could like this twice! Thanks!!
