I don’t have an issue defending the engineers but someone at Apple screwed up and there’s no denying it. Maybe it’s marketing, maybe upper management, idk. But the messaging was misleading and I don’t care how many footnotes they put when the main focus of the entire ad was showing the delayed feature to try and get you to buy a new phone. Another example is the Apple Store when they decorated it in the new Siri UI, like a month before 18.1 came out? People who bought the new phone have a right to be upset, saying get a grip is pretty strong language, this actually is a very big deal for Apple as a company and someone will have to answer for it. You want to defend the engineers fine.
Not saying I agree with them but people aren’t making up out of thin air that the features maybe didn’t actually exist. It’s definitely not unheard of or a stretch of the imagine that companies have used video effects to demo a feature that isn’t ready yet.
I don’t know that I agree with that, but I understand the sentiment. 👍🏻. Personally, I didn’t have any problems with the ads, they said all over the adds and pages for the features that these features weren’t currently available and would be available in a future update. I think most people knew that Apple was highlighting a
future feature that would be available on their phones, not a feature that was already available. But that’s just my opinion, I respect that other people disagree.
Also, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with decorating the Apple Store with references to an upcoming feature or product a month in advance. Is it wrong when Apple tells us about new iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, etc. a week or two before they’re available to order, and post whole product “learn more” pages for them right at the top of the store? I think citing that as “misleading” is a bit too strong…
Personally, I don’t see how we could call it anything other than making such claims up out of thin air. I’ve seen people confidently making such claims as if they’re facts (not stating it as a possibility, but as a certainty), when there is no evidence to support these claims, and several points of evidence against them. Like the months worth of reports about their development progress from Gurman’s cited sources, plus others who claimed to have seen the features in development. There’s no fact or evidence based reason to assume these claims that Apple didn’t really intend to release the features, yet some people are stating them as if they’re facts when they aren’t. And let’s just examine that claim for a second. What sense would that make for Apple? So you make up a feature that you aren’t actually developing and planning on releasing to customers, you advertise a product with it, and then what? When the feature doesn’t ever arrive, that’s going to hurt your credibility and result in you selling
less products in the future. Short term you might gain a few sales, but long term there’s no win. This smells like a conspiracy theory, there is just no point. And if this was just a cynical money grab from Apple, and Apple doesn’t really care about how these features work, then why would they delay releasing them to improve them? Why wouldn’t they just release the 3/4 finished feature set and say “there you go, it may not always function like in the adds, but there’s a chance it could”… 🤷🏼♂️.
I think the much more plausible explanation is that Apple
does intend on rolling out these features, and that they were genuinely excited about them when they announced them at WWDC24. That they are in development, but have just run into some setbacks requiring a delay to fix them. That’s the explanation that aligns with all of the evidence we do have, and that makes the most logical sense. That’s at least my opinion, YMMV…
PS, perhaps parts of that comment like “get a grip” were a bit harsh or too strong, but I was not referring to people who are just upset/disappointed about the delay, there are plenty of people and content creators who are upset about it but don’t come off as unhinged or out of whack over it, I was talking mostly about some people and content creators who are going ballistic and come as irrational over this and making claims as if they’re facts when they aren’t. 👍🏻. I was meaning to vent and express my frustration with such irrational behavior to a sympathetic audience, not making claims about all who are disappointed or upset about the delay, because that would include myself… 👍🏻
