I was wondering the same thing - does anyone know if it were technically doable (and usable) to cannabalise some of the memory as a cache to supplement the RAM? And could this be part of the reason for the delay in iOS4 for the iPad? Making multitasking function fluidly?

Given what iOS4 has also done to both my 3G phones, I would worry that 4 could do the same thing to my iPad. The 3G phones still work but they are very laggy.

Sounds like a reasonable idea to use some of the SSD as RAM, just like we used to on desktops but without the time lag from writing to and from a spinning hard disk.

Gentlemen.

It's not a myth, Apple told us iOS4 would be coming to the iPad. The reason it's taking longer is because Apple's iOS 4 iPhone and iPad team are completely different and don't really intertwine from what I've read.

This is wrong. Gruber stated it originally but months later corrected it after receiving more info. The teams are the same and the iPhone 4 team knew all along about the iPad.

Hey mate. Symbian phones do this all the time. Multi-tasking is not a problem but ram utilization. You might get an occasional out of memory warning but for the most part it seems to work.

BTW, this is another stupid thread.

The iPad has as much RAM as the iPhone 3GS. So, yes the iPad will be able to support multitasking just like the 3GS.

I wouldn't be surprised if a release date for iOS4 is given during an Apple media event where they also introduce a new iPad, which will run all the new iOS4 features but the original iPad will suddenly be limited in some way (because its not powerful enough etc etc) so we'll have to upgrade to get the full benefit.

It's called paging. I don't think iOS uses it yet, but that could change. There are SSD lifetime issues to consider with that, though.

The iPad was made for multitasking, and the iPad 2 already has its big selling point (a camera, we don't even need Apple to say that's coming). It can multitasking just fine, although the 256MB is still a bit pathetic.

I want you to answer this honestly.
How old are you?

I know u are not about to try and hit me with the immaturity piece. This is a forum for apple products.this forum is for people to interact by providing and giving information and also telling a few unfunny jokes. That's what this is. If you feel like you need to be a macrumors forum psychyatrist or something, u probably need to asking yourself how old you are. This is a computer dude. You will more than likely never meet me or anyone else on macrumors personally, so why do u think u need to try and judge the character or maturity level of anyone here. If a person can't make a worthless thread on an Internet forum.....WTH?!! plus my question was a serious one. It didn't interest u yet u still found a way to ask your worthless question. U are taking this too too serious. A few bible names aren't going to kill u or anybody else. Plus, my thread isn't the worst and it surely won't be the last horrible thread posted on macrumors. Get a life.

OH...and I'm old enough to get into the strip club:eek:

just because you can get into a strip club...

This waiting is killing me. Am I the only one who feels like iOS 4 for iPad is just a mere myth. I know we aren't too much farther away now, but we haven't even seen a beta. Hope all this waiting means that Apple really has something in store for us.

You know exactly what Apple has in store for OS4 for the Ipad.
We all have it on our phones already, With the exception of face time, and a few other things. You sound like a kid a month before christmas, waiting to find out, if you will get your pony. Use your Ipad, and have fun with it. Apple said that the new IOS for the ipad would come out in the Fall. This is the summer.
So, the answer to your mindnumbingly useless thread is Yes, you are the only one in the universe who feels like iOS 4 for ipad is a myth. Now go have your milk and cookies and go to bed.

Just because your body is old enough that you can get into a strip club does not mean that your mind is mature enough to handle it.:p

...a new iPad, which will run all the new iOS4 features but the original iPad will suddenly be limited in some way (because its not powerful enough etc etc) so we'll have to upgrade to get the full benefit.

And of course your unlimited 3G plan cannot be transferred to your new iPad 2, so everyone is a winner (and by everyone, I mean Apple and ATT only).

I don't understand what the problem is. Apple has announced iOS4 and it has been installed on the iPhones. We know it exists. They have announced it will be released for the iPad this Fall. This is still Summer the last I checked. So how is it a Myth?

I have multi-tasking through jailbreaking and my iPad runs just fine.

Also, Apple doesn't work that way guys. THey work more like a startup, switching tams from one place to the next. The team that has been working on all these issues for the iPhone 4 will be working at the same time/and after on iOS 4 for the iPad. They have little amounts of employees for that size of a company and work together, not separated into committees.

My prediction is that iOS4 for iPad will be introduced (with fanfare!) during the September iPod event. There will then be a beta testing period of a month or two which means that we will probably get our hands on it in November.

I also think that Apple are not stupid enough to obsolete an expensive piece of gear before the international launch is completely finished. My bet is that existing iPads will run iOS4 fine. I would also be surprised if another iPad is introduced this September.

Basically the iPad was secured in a locked room with no blinds/etc and employee's had to scan in and it was bolted down to a table while iOS4 was being developed.

The team developing iOS4 had little to no idea about the iPad other then the engineers who were designing/CEO's/special people it up until the last minute. This is why iOS4 wasn't designed for the iPad and the teams were separate, to prevent leaks.

So basically they have to rebuild from scratch iOS4 and design it to comply with the iPad. (Hence new team.)

Do you have a source for that? It just seem very very unlikely that they'd have to rebuild iOS 4 for the iPad...update it? Yes, but they'd just need to change it similarly to how the change iOS 3 for iPad

Your prediction is just proof that you listened to Jobs when he said the new iPad OS will drop in November. Wow, what a prophet.

Why's that? What prevents me from swapping the Micro-SIM card from my old iPad to my new one?

folders will work the same way Stacks does on Snow Leopard (the grid version) and multi-tasking will suck like it does on the iPhone unless there are some major changes to the iPad iOS, this is taking way too long

Are you a serial whiner? How does multi-tasking suck and what is not working about it? Are things running in the background like Pandora, GPS apps, etc...? Or are you just looking for something to complain about? Second, taking too long? Did you miss the press conference where Jobs said November? Do you need a calendar? Just in case you missed it, it's August. It goes like this: August, September, October, NOVEMBER (magic release month). Is that clear enough for you now?

I didn't claim that it was a particularly insightful prediction :)

Given some of the speculation around these parts I thought it was worthwhile to outline what seems to be the most likely way things are going to go. I haven't read any news or rumours which makes me think that Apple are going to miss their Fall target.
