They probably won't release it tomorrow, but could very well be that they'll give out the beta tomorrow. Or at least a detailed releasedate

Wait a second - the iPad has only 256 RAM... it RELOADS tabs when you switch between them? Is this a joke?
You can't listen to a podcast and have 3 tabs open? WHAT THE HELL?

I was planning to buy one of these when they would become available - it hasn't even launched here yet and its already obsolete... Ridiculous! :(

Don't worry, these people are just FUDing. I have an iPad and have never encountered problems with the tabs.

But can you use safari to have more tabs open - and when you switch between them will they reload?
If the answer to the above question is yes - is there a browser that behaves like firefox on desktop - to keep the pages loaded?

I want an iPad for browsing - if it can't browse it isn't worth the money for me.

Thanks in advance

You can listen podcast, it won't reload... You can even leave safari and podcast will still be playing.

I'm interested in browsing with multiple open tabs - can you seamlessly switch between them?

Depends. And reloading isn't a big deal if you are on an wifi connection, but could get annoying if you're on 3G. Either way, for me, it's not a deal-breaker, because the alternative is to have absolutely no internet while on the go.

Depends on what?

Yes, up to a point. If you have enough memory available, you can have up to 9 pages open in separate tabs/windows and switch between them without having to reload the pages from the network.

The point of contention here is what happens when you start to run out of memory. When Windows or OSX starts running out of memory it copies parts of the RAM to the hard disk drive so that RAM can be reused. This means that a desktop OS effectively has an unlimited amount of memory; however if an OS copies enough data to the HDD eventually the system will grind to a halt. The iPad OS doesn't do this; instead it simply quits Apps and chucks away web pages when it needs to free memory.

Phew so it works :)
I don't need 9 tabs, 3-4 is enough if it won't start reloading every time I switch between them.

Good news for me :D

thanks for the answer guys

Just to be clear there have been times when I've opened up 3 pages and when I go back to the first it's reloaded. There have also been times just after a reboot when I've had all 9 pages open and been able to swap between them without a reload. Because iOS is a "black box" it's difficult to know exactly why this is.

Personally I don't find the reloading particularly annoying; however you might be different so I'd suggest trying to get some hands-on time before you buy.

This is simply not true. If you have open 3 or 4 tabs, go check your mail and then run a game or another app - and then go back to Safari, I can GUARANTEE you the pages reload. Heck, I've opened ONE page in Safari, gone to check my mail, play a song in the background/open a game/app and gone back and that SINGLE tab has reloaded.

The iPad is FLAWED. I own one, love it, and STILL am not blind to this FACT.

Anyone who denies this is just... well... in denial.

The issue for me isn't what happens when the device runs out of RAM, it's that it runs out of RAM to begin with. Apple completely fixed the running out of RAM issue when they released the 3GS. Then 9 months later they took a step back when they released the iPad, which runs out of RAM just as badly as the iPhone 3G did. They've either got really sloppy code on the iPad with memory leaks here and there, or they simply short-changed customers by underspeccing the RAM.

Why do people think the Safari reloading thing is a RAM issue?

I can have 6+ tabs open in Atomic Browser, which is just a front end UI for Safari, and none of them reload.

This is just a bug on Apple's part. Not an issue caused by the iPads RAM, or lack thereof.

Yep, I can't even use Safari anymore. Atomic Browser is what Safari should be.

The iPad is FLAWED.

Yet it is still much nicer to use than anything else out there. Funny how it works, right? Anyway, a couple of iPad generations from now we'll have a full 1 GB of RAM in them and they'll just fly....

And of course, we could have had that already, but the more reasons for us to want to upgrade, the better (for Apple), right?

The iPhone 3G with 128mb RAM would reload Safari tabs a lot. The 3GS, with double the RAM, fixed this completely. A similar scenario could be true for the iPad, meaning it would need 512mb to work properly.

Explain why it doesn't happen with Atomic Browser please. It is based on Safari.

I was all ready for dismissing this as nonsense, however this morning I checked for updates to my iPad apps and found this...

Of course, it is entirely plausible that the description is just made up nonsense, but maybe, just maybe, a selected number of devs have had access to iOS 4.x for iPad?

App is UK Traffic HD.

I highly doubt we will see an IOS 4.1 for iPad on wednesday, there is no chance they will just drop a release that big on developers without allowing them to test their apps for it first. I do think tho that we might see a 4.1 beta for the iPad get released for developers.

Interesting, but why on earth would apple just release the beta to a select number of developers, that makes no sense.

Like I said, Steve could very well say: "iOS4.1 for iPad will be released end of september, devvers can download the beta today and prepare"

Oh, after he told us that since the international release, the monthly sales of iPad's has been 2 million per month, totalling a 10 million iPads worldwide.
