iOS Bugs

Two problems, the first being extremely frustrating, and the second being mildly annoying

First the frustrating one:
With email accounts that don't have the passwords entered (e.g. those that automatically synced from mac),
It requests your password, regardless of what app you're in,
even if mail isn't open,
it overlays any content open at the time,
when it requests your password it disables the home button from working
and thus stops you from exiting an app,
if you click cancel then it waits a second or two and asks again
this is EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING,
i have 7 or so email addresses, each having different passwords, my iphone was rendered useless by constant pop ups. e.g.
enter password for ...1
cancel
enter password for ...2
cancel
enter password for ...1
cancel
etc.

I couldn't even get to the settings pane to disable the mail accounts (which have to be deleted individually to stop this), and i was unable to stop the popups even when changing mail settings on itunes and syncing across

in the end i had to revert to aeroplane mode, delete all my mail accounts, to even start using this frustrating iphone os

(and just throwing it out there, if you click cancel, then it should cancel...right?)

and the second minor bug is:
When opening passbook the screen flickers and brightness goes to 100%
brightness and screen flicker revert when closed

also a minor gripe about the lack of transparency ruining background photos,
and the use of perspective with background can be sickening (physically nauseating)

also, for the record, this happened on:
iOS7 Beta 1, running on iPhone 5 CDMA variant

The parallax is very disappointing - hardly works half the time and the amount of scrolling makes it virtually pointless in its current iteration.

Guys really need some help ..

In the UK have downloaded the iPhone 5 GSM update and when i try to restore or update via itunes using alt update or alt restore it tells me the software version is not compatible ..

Getting frustrated now!

I take it you downloaded the correct IPSW file - there were two, one for each model. Yours should be called "iPhone5,2_7.0_11A4372q_Restore.ipsw" - if its not, you've got the wrong one.

Also if its any help, iTunes refused to update the first time - worked the second time though.

I have an iPhone 5, 32 GB, on Verizon. Some of what I've observed so far:

*** Initial Installation and First Sync ***
I followed the suggested install procedure, which is to connect the iPhone to my desktop (in this case, a MBP) and perform a backup, followed by a restore with the iOS7 beta image. The initial install/restore went smoothly and very quickly. Done, and done.

I have lots of apps. After the initial installation of iOS7, iTunes wanted to sync all my apps back to my phone from my backup. iTunes and iOS7 appeared to begin syncing, but did not actually sync.

I disconnected the iPhone from the MBP, then rebooted the iPhone and rebooted the MBP. After this, I restarted iTunes, then plugged in the iPhone. App sync worked flawlessly after that, and successfully copied 130 apps to my iPhone.

*** New feature I noticed... ***
I don't think it's breaking any secret oaths to tell you about a feature that seems to have been lost in all the chatter. Your Flickr account can now be added to the Settings, and you can now share directly from the Camera Roll to Flickr. As a Flickr user, this is awesome for me.

*** Settings and Email ***
Most, but not all, account settings were preserved, and loaded back into my iPhone. A notable exception was one of my email accounts. This account is a Google Apps for Business account, so it connects as an Exchange ActiveSync account. Once the credentials were restored, my email began flowing again.

I have three EAS accounts, two Outlook.com accounts, and my iCloud account. All seem to be functioning normally.

BONUS: The Outlook.com icon is now correct (the new blue icon that resembles a MS Office icon).

*** Email and Attachments ***
I regularly receive Excel spreadsheets in my mail. I'll look at small, simple sheets on my iPhone. iOS7 now renders the sheet fullscreen, and lays the email app UI over it. This is important to know, otherwise you will believe that the top rows (or tabs) of the spreadsheet are stuck under the email header.

To reveal fullscreen mode, tap anywhere on the spreadsheet one time, and the email window layer will vanish, revealing a full screen of spreadsheet.

I think Apple needs to make the fullscreen mode more explicit, or they need to display the spreadsheet so that it is unobscured by the email UI, when not in fullscreen mode.

*** App Issues ***
I think I concur with some other folks who suggest setting up your iOS7 install as a new iPhone. You can then start with your iCloud/Apple ID credentials and start restoring everything. This is the best way to avoid many app issues I am encountering. I may yet go back and give the phone another wipe, and start clean.

*** /!\ WATCH OUT for old versions of apps in your iTunes backup /!\ ***
If the apps on your desktop are not updated, you'll be loading outdated apps onto your iPhone.

I had this problem with the Gmail app. Gmail's icon was reverted to the old icon from a few versions ago. When I opened Gmail, it was not expanded for the iPhone 5 screen height. Forcing the app to update resolved the issue, and presented me with the latest, greatest version of Gmail, which seems to be running fine.

EDIT: When I finally opened the App Store, and switched to the Updates tab, the iPhone showed that I needed 85 updates. That's all the outdated apps from my iTunes backup. Check and recheck iTunes. It will make your life much easier.

*** Observations about specific apps ***
I am in the process of testing the apps I have. Some early results are below. Several apps had to be forced to update, or had to be uninstalled/reinstalled to get them working again.

As I said above, your best option may be to install iOS7 as a clean install.

  • Yahoo Weather app works perfectly.
  • Flickr app seems to work fine.
  • TWIT.tv app streams audio and video with no problems, so far.
  • The native Podcasts app crashes on open. Still working on this one.
  • Chrome browser seems ok, but I haven't piled up 30 or 40 tabs as I sometimes like to do.
  • Shazam had to be reinstalled. Once reinstalled, it works just fine. It even retained all my tags from iOS6!
  • Mailbox works normally (thank goodness!)
  • Gmail, as previously stated, works normally after forced update.

*** Ongoing Sync Issue ***
The iPhone seems to require being unlocked, and the screen on, to do any syncing whatsoever. During the first, long app sync, the screen locked. Sure enough, one app did not sync following the screen lock. I'll be looking at this issue more. When it comes time to reinstall the big core Apple apps (Pages, Numbers, iPhoto) I certainly don't want my sync crashing in the middle of a 1 GB transfer.

*** Cool Stuff ***
Aside from the iOS-level integration with Flickr, some fun things so far...

  • I can't say enough good things about the swipe-up-to-open Control Center. It is so useful, I cannot tell you. As someone who has used both Android and iPhone for quite some time, I like the less-cluttered Control Center. I have to wonder if Apple used telemetry from iPhone usage to determine which functions to put in there (I'm referring to the flashlight, calculator, etc.) because those are super-handy, too.
  • I love being able to check my alarm clock settings from the lock screen.
  • In the Music app, Apple replaced the detestable tiny icons for Repeat Song/Repeat All/No Repeat with actual tappable words. Ditto for Shuffle off/Shuffle All.
  • It feels like some of the tap targets, especially the ON/OFF switches in the Settings, are larger, and therefore easier to select. Maybe it's just me.

*** Closing ***
I'll be posting more discoveries on an intermittent basis. If anyone can recommend a good podcast app, I'll give it a whirl, since native Podcasts seems to be half-broken, at least for me.

Here's an actual bug:

Using AssistiveTouch locks the phone's screen. The screen still displays everything that is going on, but touch input seems to be disabled everywhere EXCEPT the AssistiveTouch tool.

If you accidentally turn it on, use Siri to turn it off.

Works fine for me, my power buttom along with the metal frame on the top of my 4s are gone lol

Is someone trying ios7 with an iphone4?

I am. The only issue I am experiencing so far is that, while there *is* transparency, it isn't taking on the color of the wallpaper. The dock and folders stay gray. But you can still see artifacts underneath, so it is semi-translucent...hoping it is just an iP4 bug?

Does anyone have the issue of installed apps showing as "Waiting..." with a progress bar over the icon on the home screen?

When making your pass code with letters it reverts to the old keyboard. And it restarted my phone with the OLD glossy apple logo. Weird.

well im on the iphone 4s. there's no + to add new contacts.

This would be a dealbreaker for me.

Perhaps poor entraik is just experiencing a glitch however.

Could anyone with a 4S confirm they can add contacts please? Ideally more than one member if possible.

Cheers.

Another issue I'm noticing is, some apps seem to be unable to acknowledge the fact that you have approved permissions for notifications in iOS7.

YouMail is one example. It just asks for permission, over, and over, and over, even when the permissions are properly set in the Settings.

Appears as though "Index" scrolling is not working/selectable in the "Songs" view of the Music app. It works correctly in other views (artist, album, etc.) but cannot be selected or used in "Songs" view.

Battery life is definitely worse but expected with beta's.

Yes, my iPhone is eating through battery like Cookie Monster. Back of the phone is staying warm, too. Some power management thing isn't kicking in as it should.

I will have to have a Mophie to get through the day, at this rate.

I'm on the 4S and there is def a "+" to add new contacts.

Well, it is a beta. But I'd bet battery life generally will be worse because of all the white. White takes more power to light up than darker colors, and most of the menus are now completely white. Also the background refreshing feature that was added must put a strain on the battery in some small way as well.

Told Siri to 'Shuffle Music' when I was in my car this morning. Siri said 'Playing all songs shuffled' and then proceeded to play them all in order still. Had to manually kick in shuffle through the Music App.

Disclaimer: I was pulled in at the petrol station when I did this!

Does anyone have the issue of installed apps showing as "Waiting..." with a progress bar over the icon on the home screen?

I have, taking ages for everything to restore :) i restarted phome after a while and double clicked each ap that said "waiting", seems to be downloading most of whats left now.

I can confirm this is an iP4 limitation currently.

Gah. Just in case I put iOS 7 back onto my device again, but no go. The dock simply stays gray no matter what wallpaper is being used.

It really bothers my OCD, so until this is fixed (if it is a bug and not an iP4 thing) then I won't be using iOS 7. :\

That's brilliant. Thank you for the screenshot as well.

Hope entraik manages to get it working.

From reading the thread there doesn't appear to be any other major issues that would affect my setup greatly. eBay not working is a pain, but I'll just use the website version until it updates so no big deal.
