Not true. If you remove the profile you will not see future updates OTA. Profile is required. El Cap is different. Once you install a beta, the App Store sees you running beta software and gives you subsequent updates.
But this is how I receive all subsequent beta of iOS 9 before installing iOS 10. I don't have profile being installed.
If you don't trust me, just delete iOS 10 beta profile and see if you still can receive iOS 10 beta 3. If you can, I am right. If you cannot, you Are right.

I don't have iOS 10 on my device. I am running 9.3.3. And yesterday I could not receive B5 until I installed the profile. Checking for updates said 9.3.3 was up to date. Same thing with B4. Had to install the profile on B3 to see B4. The reason why I keep deleting the profile is because I thought the final was coming. My devices would not see the 9.3.3 updates without the profile installed. And that is both a 6s and Air 2. Both needed profile.

Alright. I don't need profile on device to see beta, while you need.
Maybe I deliberately chose not to restart device after removing it, or maybe for some other reasons, I can still receive beta afterwards.
