That's what I meant, it auto-updates filters:) Update check is done in background every 48 hours. If update is found, it is downloaded and applied.

Yet there can be issues with this (even in upcoming 1.0.3 version). Update & apply may take pretty much time as iOS lowers background process priority to "nothing". The problem is that iOS does not allow long running background tasks and may kill the app in process leaving filters semi-updated. We'll address it in the next update though:
https://github.com/AdguardTeam/AdguardForiOS/issues/37
Ah, okay, I see. Does leaving Background App Refresh on for Adguard alleviate the above issue?

In fact it will be done even sooner. I've just taken a look at upcoming 1.0.3 version and "Send Bug Report" is already on the main screen:)
I saw it and it's a great turnaround time on that. Absolutely fantastic.

For the next version (1.1.0) - yes, it will be through the mail app.

But we have a big plans for future releases, something like reports.adblockplus.org server:
https://reports.adblockplus.org/af7d8909-4d21-4b81-a933-02f765060662

So you'll be able to easily create a very detailed report of missed ad or incorrectly blocked content.
And, what's very important, we'll see all the details like filters used, requests list and such.

Of course we need more time to implement all this as it involves lots of both server- and client- side coding.
Good to hear. Considering there are probably many people out there who do not use the default Apple mail client, being able to report issues in a different manner will probably increase the amount of people willing to do so.

Maybe the filters weren't updated at that time?
We had an issue with macworld links, but it was resolved 2 weeks ago:
https://github.com/AdguardTeam/ExperimentalFilter/issues/982
Might have been the issue. I've since gone back and turned on the Mobile ads filter and the links still work. However, it seems like something happened to break video functionality on a couple other sites which I have since reported. Hopefully they'll be fixed sooner rather than later. :)

Nope. Without background app refresh it won't work at all. With it - it will work, but due to the described issue it will be rather unstable.

Yep, it's arrived already:)

Meanwhile the version with reporting through the mail app is waiting for apple review.

Please review FOCUS

I haven't tested benchmarks or performance - but the core principals found on their blog are:
  • Content Neutrality: Content blocking software should focus on addressing potential user needs (such as on performance, security, and privacy) instead of blocking specific types of content (such as advertising).
  • Transparency & Control: The content blocking software should provide users with transparency and meaningful controls over the needs it is attempting to address.
  • Openness: Blocking should maintain a level playing field and should block under the same principles regardless of source of the content. Publishers and other content providers should be given ways to participate in an open Web ecosystem, instead of being placed in a permanent penalty box that closes off the Web to their products and services.
I trust this content blocker more than anything else avail on the app store at the moment. I have good reasons not to trust a few of these apps - and the recent bug found in the protocol makes me even more a skeptic.

Anyways, to the review:

A - Integrity
B - Performance
B - Customability

It works great for every website I use, I haven't noticed adds, it's quick. It might not win a benchmark test or block everything on the worst sites (that I never use) - but from the perspective of user experience - I'd say it's about equal with crystal but I'd rank it #3 based on what I've tried so far (purify, crystal, focus, adamant, ... 4 others I forgot the names of :p)

I'm currently using Purify as that seemed to be the most popular one. Was originally using Peace but got it refunded as Marco decides to abandon it.

I have noticed that Purify keeps breaking the loading of Facebook comments on all my regular websites and it's very annoying. And even adding the sites to it's whitelist does not seem to help? Neither does disabling Purify using the extension menu. I have to manually disable it within the Settings.app and the reload the site...

Is anyone else having these kinds of issues using Purify? Are there any other options that are know for working better or is this just regular behaviour using content blockers?

Have you tried reloading page without blocker?

Hold the reload button.

Tried Adguard cuz I'd seen it here and it by far works the best over Focus, Admop and Adblock Plus. I liked Adblock browser but currently it's crashing like crazy so I'm staying away for now.

I constantly have to use the "Reload without Content Blockers" with Purify.
Indeed, which is why I've stopped using Purify completely now. I find myself switching between Adguard and Magic a lot now since they both do what I need better than Purify, but neither are quite "perfect" for my use yet.

Purify is dead... not much is being updated. Sites which I reported 3-4 weeks ago are still broken.

For the moment Magic seems to do the best jobs. It's fast and breaks the least amount of sites.
AdGuard is good but I think it was not really created for iOS. It's mostly a copy of the Windows Software or the Google Extension.
It has tons of filters to it and most of them don't even make sense to have them on a mobile app... it also breaks some sites I visit and it's pretty slow compared to Magic.

I use block bear, does the job
Been using Block Bear recently. Magic was working fairly well but not blocking some things. I've also been using Adguard which has been working quite well, although it can be a bit tricky when it comes to all the different filtering options (as far as knowing which ones are better to be enabled or not).

So what's the best blocker out now?

Been using Purify and it doesn't seem to be as it was.

I have the following Adguard filters turned on:
1) English filter
2) spyware filter
3) social media filter
4) mobile ads filter
5) safari filter

That shall cover most ads and trackers. If you want have more aggressive content blocking, turn on:
6) Fanboy's annoyance

To get rid of EU cookies warning, I've also enabled:
7) perbake

And of course:
8) Adblock warning removal list (even though I'm not sure if it's doing anything useful lol)

Lastly, other language filter:
9) the priority is to choose from Adguard filter, if available. Otherwise, go for easylist (but not both or they will be redundant!!!)

This works really well for me.

I wonder what's different about mobile ads filter vs Safari filter (vs English filter).

I wonder what's different about mobile ads filter vs Safari filter (vs English filter).

Just based on the descriptions associated with each filters, English filter is adapted from easylist so I assume it's the core.

Safari is probably due to the fact that iOS is using different rule syntax, so certain exceptions or new rules need to be applied to overcome the deficiency in English filter.

Mobile ads filters seem self explanatory, to filter ads that are specially targeted towards mobile devices.

I'm sure avatar-adg can give a much better explanation. Turning all three of them on works fine for me... I think they complement one another.

Is adguard good enough on blocking trackers? It would be nice to just run one app.

Safari filter is not about mobile ads. It is for fixing drawbacks of "Content Blocker API" and its incompatibilities with other filters.

As @Hippocrates has said, mobile ads filter is about mobile-specific ads. It also contains lots of ad networks and trackers which are used for in-app ads. This is not very important until we finally introduce a product capable of blocking such ads.

Is adguard good enough on blocking trackers? It would be nice to just run one app.

Of course it is. What's the reason in using "Focus" (which, in turn, is using filters from "Disconnect"), when you have the whole EasyPrivacy and AG Spyware filter in one app?
