Yeh I have an iPhone 6s coming next week and without a backup I will have to transfer everything over manually. I thought those days were behind me! Just did a search on google for this keyboard data and it looks like it's been a bug since the ios8 beta in 2014 and has something to do with your recently used emojis. If it is this causing the problem then I don't hold out much hope for a fix.

Man, that's ridiculous. That would mean a ton of people are walking around now with a phone that can't be backed up.

That's interesting. Somehow it's come jumbled with a beta I guess and we can't get it out on our own.

Sure worries me to be shooting around with a phone that hasn't been backed up in 10 weeks and counting....

Hi IndianBird yes I had that for nearly a month.

I went to iTunes and deleted three apps I had installed in the last month and it backed up.

But now I can't get iCloud data to sync.

Can I ask have you been to www.icloud.com account is all your calendar, contacts reminders etc there? because I think that's important.

Also I would screenshot all your pages to see app layout.

If you have Amazon prime maybe get all photos onto their server.

I think maybe Google do free photo storage.

Plus I would phone Apple and complain.

Cheers

Yeah everything appears synced to iCloud which is weird because you wouldn't think it would be since it won't backup. I'll check apps I installed around the time it backed up in July and try again.

It's good your sync data is in iCloud that is very good news for you.

I also had to delete the '0' backup showing in iCloud on iPhone, this took up to 15 times to clear it. Then it backed up.

Hope that helps

Ok so I have been doing some more research. This bug appears to go back years!!! I found a fix that has worked for me and have now successfully backed up to iCloud. My backup now shows as today. The backup info now displays all file sizes as it should.

What to do:
1. Plug phone in to PCs via usb
2. Switch phone from backup to iCloud to backup to this pc using the option in iTunes.
3. Click apply then sync
4. Delete your iCloud backups using your phone
5. Switch the back up option back to backup to iCloud using iTunes.
6. Click apply then sync
7. Try to backup

I don't know why this worked but it has

I'll give this a try. I attempted to sync old school in iTunes on Wednesday but it failed too. I will make sure I have iCloud backup switched off on the phone as well. Sounds like a project for tomorrow when I've got time to sit with it.

I had problems backing up to iTunes too. Leave iCloud backup on the phone switched on when you plug it in. The only explanation I can see is that using iTunes to switch it off then on somehow resets it. It only takes 5 minutes to do it but the back up part took a while tho.

I have read on other forums that people seem to think this is caused by a corrupt app trying to back up. Someone suggested looking at your backup options for apps you have recently deleted that are not showing the icon image. I looked through mine and found this:
b917e6b002187b597abef26f3e838e63.jpg

I have never used this keyboard or even enabled it on my phone. I tried turning it off but no luck. I can't seem to get rid of it. Does anyone else have anything similar?

I checked and have the same problem. I am running the 9.1 beta so can't access Apple Support. Any further details you uncover, even if it is just getting rid of this app, would be great.

I had the same issue with both my iPhone 5s and iPhone 4s not backing up to iCloud after iOS 9. I researched for hours and found the same thing. I did exactly what you did and it seemed to work. My phones are backing up, but I'm still a little nervous after all of this. The backups are taking much longer now and I also see a huge decrease in battery life. I will also mention that my iPad Air 2 as backing up just fine after iOS 9. It was just my phones having the issues. Thanks for posting info, glad to know I'm not alone!

Well the fix I posted yesterday has now failed. It backed up fine yesterday but have had several failed attempts today. The fix I found was from someone describing the same problems as us back in May 2012. So I do not hold out any hope of a fix from Apple if it has been going on this long. Also not many people on this topic so can't be affecting many people.
Has anyone tried backing up to a different iCloud account?

I was able to backup to iCloud again today. Haven't waited to see if the automatic backup works yet or not.

Running into the same failed automatic backup issues. Both my iPad and iPhone ever since updating to iOS 9. I turned off backup and deleted precious backups then turned it back on. Seemed to resolve the issue for the time being.

Today I went to the Settings menu on my iPhone and selected "Erase All Content and Settings."

Then plugged into iTunes and restored from a backup I made from Wednesday (when iOS 9 was officially released).

iCloud backups now works like a charm.

yes I did the same but it didn't work

Did a backup (iCloud / iTunes)
Check www.icloud.com to see your precious data is there.
sync msecure to iCloud
I made loads of screen shots of my iphone
Setup as new phone
sync with iCloud
install apps as per screen shots
used iexplorer for some app data

I'm back in business everything working fine, must have been a glitch.
Will keep an eye on iCloud backups & backup to iTunes as well, from now on.

Same here too using 9.1, and I have no clue about how this keyboard showed up there.

It seems like if I do a manual backup and babysit it (aka don't let the screen shut off) through the end, the backup actually completes. Does this work for anyone else?

No. It just tells me the backup couldn't be completed.

No. It just tells me the backup couldn't be completed.

I was having a ton of trouble with this and after trying all the suggested steps here and other forums I decided to delete my policy and tried again. It was only after doing that my iCloud backups started working. Not sure how this affects my ability to get work email etc. going forward but we'll figure that out later. Right now I'm just relieved to have gotten to the bottom of this issue.

Backups aren't showing in my phone when it's turned off, so I can't really delete them (step 4).

I was pretty much having the same problem, but managed to solve it (on 6 different devices - 4 iPads and 2 iPhones). My theory is that your iCloud backup is still there, but somehow following iOS9 the back is no longer associated with your iDevice. Hence why your backup shows as 0kb (but storage space in iCloud indicates the backup is still there). In addition, iOS9 has turned iCloud backup for all of your apps. Thus (depending on how much iCloud storage you have or the amount of data in your apps), you could run out of iCloud storage space.

The options really are to wait for Apple to fix the problem (but run the risk of not having any iCloud backups) or delete your old iCloud backup and start again. I opted to delete the old iCloud backup as I will be upgrading to a new iPhone 6s shortly and once my old iPhone 6 is gone, I don't think I will be able to delete backups associated with it (and hence will permanently lose iCloud storage).

The Solution
(and yes it can sound like a bit of voodoo magic) I found was.

Backup Deletion Process
1. Go to Settings-->iCloud-->Storage-->Manage Storage-->Select your device that you are having problems backing up.
2. Wait for the spinning wheel to finish (loading icon beside backup options). THIS IS IMPORTANT. If you don't wait for iCloud to finish loading, your will not be able to delete your backup and you will get the "Cannot Delete Backup" error message.
3. Scroll down and click "Show all apps" and then click "Delete Backup". It should start to delete (but may take awhile). You should also see the amount of free iCloud space you have increase (once the backup has been deleted).
4. After Deleting the backup successfully, go back to the main iCloud settings page and turn on iCloud Backup (if not on already).
5. Go to the same Manage Storage page and select which items you want to backup to iCloud.
6. Go to iCloud Backup page and click "Back up Now" to perform a manual backup.

Now you have to wait for your backup to complete. Depending on the size of your backup, this could take awhile. If you just want to see if this works, do a small iCloud backup (by turning off iCloud backup on most of your apps). I did this initially and got the backup to complete in about an hour. With all of my things turned back on, it took 8 hours.

You may encounter the "Backup could not complete" error message. If you do, just select "Back up now" again. Whilst the backup did not complete properly, data has still been backed up and your backup should resume from where it left off.

Hope this helps and hopefully Apple will fix the problem shortly.

Thanks. tried this, no luck. I get all the way to step 5 and then I see a 5.1GB backup (my old backups were never that big...). I'm only on the free 5gb so I go to uncheck my photos from backing up and I get the cannot turn off at this time, try again. Also, all my apps (including photos) show "no data" despite showing a 5.1gb backup pending. This is pissing me off. At the moment i"m doing hard backups to iTunes on my mac every few days when I remember.
