Not true. I have plenty of apps that are supposed to play default sounds and they're all muffed up too on all three of my IOS devices.

I can't understand why Apple is letting this go on for so long. I can understand that maybe they're going through and trying to clean up old code sometimes things like this happen, but something this severe needs to have the new code stripped out and the old put back in ASAP, much like they took too long to go back to the old WiFi code. This is basic functionality, part of the whole "it just works" thingy. It is making me insane and has caused me a TON of trouble. Right now at home I have my android tablet booted up and running so I at least don't miss things when I'm home. Pathetic.

I plan to never update to an iOS x.0 release ever again at this point. I should have waited for 9.1

Sigh.

If you buy the latest iPhone you're stuck with the x.0 version of iOS whether you like it or not. It's strange that those who keep their phones two years actually get to have a year with a totally functional o/s whereas those who upgrade annually are forever running beta software.

Well, not forever since the latter updates of new versions are generally seen as fairly good (as can be seen in many threads about new iOS versions and comparing them to the last update of the previous version).

Yeah but you're only on them a week/month before the new phone and new iOS ship.:D
Having said that, iOS9 is considerably more usable out of the box than 7 and 8.

this stupid bug is still not fixed. I cannot believe. This is the most basic function of a damn mobile phone!!!

Yes, suffering on my iPhone 6. My partner complained yesterday about this issue too, and until that moment I thought it must have been something wrnog with my phone. Now I see all your posts.

Fishy! I hope we have a fix soon.

What I've found with this issue is that for some reason, the phone uses the audio volume instead of the ringer volume for everything (including alerts) so long as any app is open that uses it.

For me, it's usually Safari, Facebook, or Youtube.

If you pull up the control center from the bottom, is the audio volume set all the way down to zero? When mine is at zero, and these apps are open, I often get silence notifications even though the ringer is on and set mid-way.

I suspect this is what's happening for most of you. I don't really know what the solution is other than to kill the apps that are doing it (anything that might play audio, which is most of them), or turn up the audio output volume a bit and see if that helps.

Another way to test it is to set the audio output volume at maximum but the ringer low. If you start getting really loud notifications (as I do) then that's the problem.

I don't really know of any other fix to this. It's like the device starts using the audio volume for the ringer instead of ringer volume whenever there's something that is or could use the audio output open in the background.

I spent about a week cataloging this issue on my 6S+ (iOS 9.0.2).
Hit or Miss
  • Calendar - usually hit
  • eMail - usually miss
  • iMessage - usually miss
  • Twitter - usually miss
  • Word With Friends - usually hit
  • Safari - usually miss
  • GMail - usually miss
  • BeWeather - usually hit
  • Alarm - hit
  • Phone - hit
  • Account alerts like Chase/United/Esurance/TWC/ATT - usually miss
Volume bar in CC set at approx 30%. Ringer set at approx. 50%

For me I didn't really notice it as I generally have Sound inactive for most app alerts.
I did turn them all on and rebooted the device.

I was startled at the number of "no-sound" alerts I have.

Most are now back to Off.

Nope, it's set to max. So that's not it.

It's not that it's silent, it's not even showing up as notifications. No badge, no banners, etc. That's the issue.

My mistake.

I don't know what the fix is for that. Hope Apple can be bothered to fix it though.

Agree with Shandyman: the other apps with sound running and or volume on those at low is not the cause, at least for me.

All apps that beep or boob were removed from background. Audio and ringer volumes full on. All my alerts work except sound for reminders. Will vibrate for that. And all apps showing badges.

FOr me it's fixed (before 9.1, on 9.0.2) doing a soft-reset (no factory reset): home+power when the device is on.

Does that mean you missed some notification sounds/alerts?

Yes. I turned all my sounds notification alerts back on (i usually keep them off). These mirror the alerts on my Note 5 and iPhone 6S+. The 6S+ is on 9.0.2.
With all active this afternoon, all notification alerts sounded on my Note 5 and a mix on my iPhone an Mini. I did not specifically track which.

Conclusion: I am still missing these on the Mini on 9.1

I have now blissfully silenced my Mini and iPhone.

So were all the notifications still actually received and just not all made a sound/alert, or were there some that were not even received?

I installed iOS 9 GM a week ago (clean install) and I've been having this issue with some notifications not consistently notifying with a sound or vibration. For example, the gmail app will alert with the sound/vibration about 80% of the time and 20% of the time the notification will just light up on my screen without vibrating/sounding off. After playing around with some of my apps, I realized it has to do with those apps that use stock tones (like tri-tone) and those that use their custom sounds. if the app uses a stock iOS tone it will always notify with a vibration or sound. if it has a custom sound, it exhibits that ~80% rule.

I've updated today to the iOS 9 release version and still experiencing the same thing. Anyone else getting the same issue? Thanks in advance.

I submitted a bug report a few weeks ago
