iOS 9 Runs Great on 6S

Had a play with a 6S in store this morning. It's as fast as my 6 on 8.4.1

Hmm so yeah. Our 6, 6 Plus etc are basically obsolete within a year. It is all solely optimised for the 6S.

This never happened to the 5S when the 6 came out, that's for sure.

Seems like that's the new Apple way. Release the new software to run great on the new phones, fsck the older phones. Upgrade and buy a new phone every year so we can make more money. I reckon iOS 10 will be the same with iPhone 7. The 6s and 6s+ will be pretty much obsolete next year.

the 6 was one of the most meagre updates in iPhone history, so that's probably why.

This planned obsolescence strategy can't work forever. If phones get stronger and faster forever, Apple will struggle to bring the performance down with each iOS iteration. Like Windows, you reach a point where you can't force people to upgrade every year.

The best way to retain performance with any iOS device is to leave it on the version of iOS that it shipped with at launch.

There is nothing visual between iOS 8 and 9 that would tax the GPU more and result in the lag.

Nobody knows, so claiming either is stupid without evidence. In any case, these iPhones 6S are brand-new, have no data on them and are effectively not doing anything. Of course they run well, nobody will leave their phones in a state like this.

I doubt there is planned obsolescence, but if it just happens that the new iOS makes your older devices pale in comparison to your latest and greatest, I'm sure there's not a massive rush to optimise it either.

Well, GPU maybe not, but CPU - yes (e.g. Siri proactive). And it may cause the lag if the CPU is not fast enough.

It runs really great on iPhone 6, I can't even see any differences between 8 or 7. If that's not enough, I can say that even my older iPhone 5 is running smoothly. The only problem, in my case, is with two specific animations on my iPad Air.

Anyway, I don't see any obsolescence.

The iPhone 6 is far from being obsolete, it runs iOS 9 just fine, just not as smooth as iOS 8.

It runs really great on iPhone 6, I can't even see any differences between 8 or 7. If that's not enough, I can say that even my older iPhone 5 is running smoothly. The only problem, in my case, is with two specific animations on my iPad Air.

Anyway, I don't see any obsolescence.

I only notice difference if I use a device using 8 side by side with one using iOS 9. There is then a noticeable difference. Even just unlocking the phone.

You don't think that having 2gb of ram and a faster A9 processor might have something to do with the improved performance?

That still wouldn't make basic UI animations slower, laggier, or stutter in places randomly.

For what it's worth, I turn Siri off and didn't see any difference, so the proactive Siri had no bearing on UI performance.

Have you tried the Reduce Transparency and Motion off and back on trick. Worked for my 6 while I still had it

I tried side-by-side comparison with a couple of iPhone 6 phones and didn't really notice anything one way or the other.

9 runs ok on 6/6+, it isn't bad, but it is clear that there are issues, perhaps they will be addressed in the .1 - .4 upgrades. It is clear that Apple has not focused on making OS' run smoothly on older devices. It appears their focus is on the newest devices, and oh yeah, let the older devices have some of the table scraps too. I played with 9 on my 6+ before I restored (clean install), it was considerably more laggy than 8.4.1. I had to do a clean install (it crashed) on my Ipad Air, and it is still considerably slower than 8.4.1.

Planned or not (making older devices obsolete), it is happening, and it seems to be at a faster rate than previous devices.

No really noticeable difference with side by side comparison that I've noticed. I'm sure some can certainly have it, but it doesn't mean that everyone does.

As for support for phones, the reality is that most of the ones outside of iPhones do not and that hasn't been all that strange. It's not to say that's great or even good, but it is the reality with mobile phones for the most part.

Says who? The rest of the industry?? Because nope..
I've been buying consumer electronic devices since like forever. Going back to the Pocket PC days support for newer OS/firmware would actually cease for hardware in like a year or less. Symbian OS from Nokia would support firmware upgrades only if there are faults. Same as Sony Ericsson, Motorolla etc
Apple started the trend of adding new features in firmware upgrades for years after release

I am using iPhone 5s and I don't even think it's slow and laggy at all. People here just brag about superficial and minimal things. It's like: 1 millisecond slower. OMGWTFBBQ!! IOS 9 IS SLOW! Cmon... Complaining about iPhone 4s or even 5 it's understandable (that's for sure is slow as hell, I use iPad mini 1), but complaining iPhone 6!?...
