I agree with lagwagon. A detached dock doesn't look like a notification and everyone knows what the dock does. Yes a dock that connects to the bottom looks more like the macOS dock. But, it also looks like the hand off window in the multitasking screen. So people might think you can drag it up with that sort of thinking. Also, I think both look good either way. The counter arguments don't make sense though.

I don't see how they are less likely to confuse the Dock for something they can dismiss like a notification but more likely to confuse it with a handoff window.
They both are great but I just think the macOS one looks a tad better. I know Apple has no plans to merge iOS and macOS but I'd like coherence in design. Maybe they should change the Dock on macOS too should they change the one on iOS?

The text bellow the dock apps and too close to the edge. Could u remove the labels under each icon, just the dock..

It's amazing how a simple thing like rounded corners and a detached layer can revitalise something.
I would love to see this implemented in iOS song with the idea of a scrollable/ contextual dock. Have the dock time / location aware with changing apps with an option to lock apps in place if needed.

hmm a swipeable dock...that would be interesting

but as someone mentioned...we should be allowed to have 5 icons in the dock...

the amount of wasted space is annoying as hell...

while I'm at it...how about allowing icons to be placed anywhere along the grid

View attachment 638907 View attachment 638908 Very naff renders created late at night on my iPad using Pixelmator so apologies for the quality haha

A decent look at what a dark mode could be like. It would be visually so nice to have a dark dock option similar to macOS's dark dock. So thumbs up on that! (Especially that it was done late night on an iPad)

But personally don't agree with using the same dots under an app like in macOS. Apps don't run forever until you manually close them in iOS like they do on a Mac. So an indicator seems unnecessary (at least to me they do.) Also the missing app names makes it look out of place when an app retains the name text outside the dock. An "all or none" option perhaps, but by a mix of both.

Trust me, I very much agree; just got too late for me to have any more energy :p

In the spirit of MartinAppleGuy's Dark Mode version, I made a Dark Mode version of the original one i made in the OP.

Looks great and less 'I'm really tired' than mine lol ;) I feel small of iOS 10 would look better if it was rounded and connected, rather than rounded and detached. Like he control centre I made on my iPad render.

And some transparency :)

Yeah I know the translucency is missing in my "dark" version. I literally only spent 3-5 minutes on it (I just created a new shape of the dock, made it dark and then masked out the icons and text) I would have to redo the whole thing to do a proper dark mode one.

Wasn't criticising, was just pointing out iOS 10 could do with some more transparency! Your mockups are great :)

Since iOS 7 I've always thought that the Dock should be the top row of Control Center. So, when you swipe up for Control Center the Dock would move up as well to unveil the rest of it.

That idea breaks down when invoking Control Center from anywhere other than a Home Screen. Also, with the swipe-able nature of CC in iOS 10 for Music and Home controls it makes it even worse.

We need to press Apple to change the look of the dock. It's a small change that can give a whole new look to the os..
