With beta 4, I lost 4K on my iPhone XS Max, but am able to get it in incognito mode. Nothing will or has ever worked on my iPad Pro 10.5 though.

Have any iPad Pro 10.5 owners been able to get any sort of 4K on YouTube yet? I’m kinda scared that Apple won’t roll it out to a 3-year old iPad Pro, even though it supports HDR.

Same here, on my older mid-2017 iPad Pro on YouTube I only get 1080p 60fps.

Ok. iPad Pro 2018 here, latest public beta, latest YT app. My main YouTube account used to work with 4K, but a few weeks back it stopped. After reading the comments here I tried incognito and it worked, 4K is there in the app. WTF. That sucks.

Update: Youtube has released the 4K option to more accounts. I have 5/7 accounts now able to watch 4K VP9. Still not on my main though...
I had on my main, and now I don't anymore, but works on my secondary account and in incognito.
aAlso another change I noticed is that in my main account (which went back to be limited to 1080p) the AUTOPLAY button is in its usual place, but on my secondary account the button have moved to be inside the video window.

I’ve not had any luck on guest account of main account with latest TVOS beta and 4K. Anyone else?
At least with the previous beta, I don't think it had been implemented yet on tvOS, but it's officially coming.

"Watch the latest YouTube videos in their full 4K glory. Your favorite music, slo‑mo, outdoor, and vlog footage never looked better."

Also, PowerVR GPUs have included hardware VP9 decode support since 2014. Apple A10 came out in 2016, and Apple A10X came out in 2017.

BTW, this has got to be the worst demo ever:

Wow, it seems incredible to me that Apple didn’t activate this support on their chips until now, six years later.

By the way, very interesting thread. Do we know anything about AV1 support at least on latest A12 and A13 chips?

It was a format war. Apple has finally surrendered.

I don't think there has been any mention of that yet.

actually VP9 support for PowerVR GPU extends to all devices which have the series 6 models from what I read. So even A7 devices with the 6430 chip from 2013 ( the A6 SoC ones don’t get it) can support hardware VP9 just That it’s only available for iOS 14 and above.

That’s an interesting find. I’ve already read another post from Reddit that confirms my theory. It said something along the lines of “YouTube heavily uses A/B testing so even if you’re on the same version as everybody else you might not be able to stream 4K and the only thing you can do is wait”.

I would assume that YouTube is still going through testing and you might lose your ability to stream 4K at any time

It’s also been said in other threads, over the last few weeks, on this forum that YT uses A/B testing. So, it’s probably best to not worry about it until, at least, iOS 14 is officially released.

As of the new beta:
  • iPhone XS Max now has 4K while logged on (for previous beta, I had to use incognito mode to see it)
  • iPad Pro 10.5” still doesn’t get 4K while logged in or in incognito. It has never had 4K yet. I’m afraid Apple might be excluding this iPad from getting it even though it could easily handle it. Sigh.

Same here have the 2019 iPad mini (a12 based) and now stuck with 1080P again. Updated to a newer version of YouTube app no change from the version that worked before.

Wait, did you have 4K before on your 2019 Mini?

Yes, I saw it on the iPadOS 14.0 b5, right after YouTube app was updated to 15.33.4
Another iPhone user confirmed same observation. Now with 14.0 b6 that no loner works even with a slightly newer YouTube app posted 2 days ago

Earlier post in the B5 thread

4K YouTube for b6 has been pretty buggy for me. If I force close the app and reopen it I can watch 4K videos but if I watch anything from my history it reverts back to 1080p until I reopen the app again. The ability to watch 4k completely disappeared yesterday on my main account but came back today. My other account still seems fine

This is ridiculous hearing that it works.. then doesn’t .. then works.., then doesn’t

YT, how about actually updating your app and enlisting full compatibility for the devices which will get 4K and HDR support or not instead of doing nothing about it
