I'm going to speak for my specific area here. I was going to come on here and talk about how by the time Apple FINALLY releases Look Around to the full US, that the imagery would already be pretty outdated in a lot of places (based solely on the last time I actually remember seeing an Apple Maps car driving around town. Who knows how many times it's happened since that one time I actually saw it). But then I got in the car this morning and for the heck of it, put in turn-by-turn for my drive to the store.

The map is significantly greener (not nearly as much unshaded areas anymore). There were quite a few times where I glanced at the map and thought "that didn't look like that a few days ago". I noticed more bike/walking paths showing up on the map as well. But now here's the kicker...there's a particular road that didn't exist at the beginning of the year so obviously it wasn't on the map. Construction finished and the road opened a month ago. It's on the map. Complete with all of the icons for any stop signs and stop lights along it. Which tells me they must've driven through here in at least the last month which means this was a pretty quick turnaround to update the data. It's up-to-date on roads, there aren't any missing walking/bike paths anymore, the map is greener, 3D building models are about as up-to-date as they can be right now (barring current building construction).

It's a pretty decent update around here, so hopefully that's a sign of something.

But no Look Around in 90% of the US.

I don’t want to hear any more of “the US always gets stuff first” talk about Apple features.

Clearly it does not.
Look around didn't come first in the United States? 🤔

Countrywide when updated Maps is released?? No…

But that is what has happened in every country updated (I think) since Canada!!
And you know why because Apple will probably release the whole country with Poi labels in Look Around and the DCE. It will again be the first country to receive this.

Offline Maps (08:2023) Large.png

I am KickNo5073 from reddit. Thought I'd share another map I made earlier during the beta period of iOS 17 for regions where the "Offline Map" feature is available, which as it turns out, is not everywhere. This is a repost from the initial reddit post I made found at: https://www.reddit.com/r/applemaps/comments/15lrz02

Hong Kong now has Look Around. That came pretty quick after the last release, so I wonder if they're speeding up!

I noticed the news that Apple and Google agreed to remove all live-traffic information from their respective apps for Israel/Gaza

Sobering times..

Time for more random observations!

Vast majority of the time, the junction view activates roughly 0.3 miles from your exit or maneuver. But there’s this one highway where the junction view activates nearly 0.8 miles before the exit. Consistently, every time. I wonder why?

Here’s an interesting one…when navigating down this local road towards a highway, the junction view activates a few blocks from this transition, giving you a rare junction view on a local road. It’s kinda cool. Why can’t we just drive around in this view all the time? lol

Found a complex intersection where the turn diagram matched on both CarPlay and my Apple Watch.

And here’s some weirdness I experienced today. I planned a trip with one additional stop in between. I set it up on my phone beforehand, since setting up the extra stop in CarPlay can be tricky sometimes.

During the drive, the camera behaved strangely the entire time. It would switch to a top down view like normal when approaching a turn, but instead of zooming in while approaching the turn, it would zoom waaay out instead.

Additionally, if I pressed the button to show the route overview, the labeling of the alternate routes was different. Instead of the usual “4 minutes slower”, etc., it just said “10 Min”, like it does when first starting a route, and it tells you the ETE for each of the routes.

After completing the route and starting a new route later, the camera behavior went back to normal.

You know we’re not fancy enough to have DCE.
Forgot to screenshot it, but since my workplace is in a DCE area, I checked around it. Same story. ALL left turn arrows (and ONLY left) are purple. Looked at different roads in the coverage area and it’s the same thing. They stick out like a sore thumb! Interesting glitch. Wonder what they’re working on in the background…
